Butterfly life Cycle/ Preschool de Bono’s Virtual Thinking Hats

Goals:

*Students will understand the basic life cycle of a butterfly.

*Students will implement there pre-writing skills.

*Students will create a picture of their own interpretation of a butterfly.

*Students will compile data by understanding the difference between real and pretend.

Rationale:

The purpose of this thematic unit is to enhance the understanding of the butterfly life cycle and butterflies in general.

During this activity, students will watch a YouTube video of the life cycle of a butterfly. The video is the next slide in the Prezi. After the video, students will make a list either by writing or drawing about what we need in our classroom for our butterflies. We will then, meet as a whole group and the teacher will make a master list on the board . We will compile the data and mark out things we don't need to make a finale list. •During a whole group activity, We will read The Very Hungary Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We will use a flannel graph board to bring the story to life, then watch the YouTube video in the Prezi Presentation of the story. After the story, we will review and see if the student's remember what comes next in the story by putting the felt pieces in order. After the lesson, we will check out Eric Carle's author website to see what other books we might like to read.

•By Using the information we have already learned, we will go back and review the two youtube videos. The butterfly life cycle video and the Eric Carle video. We will make a chart on the smart board and I will give the students certain situations in each video. The students will have to decide if the situations are real or pretend. If the situation is real the students will put a tally mark in the real column. If the situation is pretend the students will put a tally mark in the pretend column. At the end of the lesson we will add up the tally marks and discuss which column had more. This exercise will get my students critically thinking about what is real and what is pretend.

After the video and whole group discussion, students will use their per-writing abilities to journal about why butterflies would be important to them. They can either draw a picture about it in their journal or write about it depending upon where the student is with his or her writing skills.

Thinking About Thinking •To wrap up our butterfly thematic unit, We will review all we have learned about butterflies. Then, I will have my student's journal about the hatching process that took place in our classroom and what their favorite aspect of the butterfly unit was. After students journal, we will make a fun butterfly snack by following the recipe from the link below.
