A Brief On Trick-Or-Treating You’re a high school kid now. Or (as some of you would like to think) a high school adult. Halloween is coming up and the childish tendency to want to run around in a costume and ring random neighbors’ doorbells for candy is one that has been itching in the back of your mind since mid-June. Parents, peers and nay-sayers everywhere are going to try and throw the typical line your way: “You’re too old to go trick-or-treating.” Frankly, that is a load of hog-wash. Somepeoplebelievethathavingalittlebitof“kid”bloodleftinthemistheworstthing that could possibly happen. “Being cool” implies that you are an adult. Here are the facts: 1) unless you’re an 18-year-old senior, then you aren’t an adult; 2) “being cool” isn’t an antonym for “being a kid.” Theaveragestudenthasfouryearsinhighschool.Theyhavefouryearslefttobea kid. From my experience, you need to take advantage of that. As a kid, you can get in trouble and not be punished severely. As a kid, you can dress up like a maniac and only be judgedalittlebit.Butmostimportantly, asakid, youcanrunaroundaneighborhood, ringon doorbells, and get rewarded with a boatload of candy. Here’s a question: Why wouldn’t you take advantage of that? Plainandsimple:you’reonlyakidonce.Nomatterhowbadlyyouwanttodenybeing young, you still are. Go trick-or-treating. Break popular stereotypes. Be a “kid” for one last time.

Halloween: a time known for dressing up, scaring people, and handing out that wrapped sugary goodness when the festive kids in cute and scary costumes come and ring

your doorbell. This is what most people think of this wonderful fall holiday as. The thing that most people don’t associate with Halloween is charity programs, specifically a charity programcalled Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. The program was created in 1950 by UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) and has been going strong for 62 years.

The concept is simple; kids that trick-or-treat on Halloween night bring small cardboard boxes decorated with the UNICEF logo with them throughout the night. In addition to the traditional “Trick-or-Treat!” that is commonly used when you ring the doorbell on Halloween night, the kids carrying the UNICEF Trick-or-Treat boxes add the phrase “for UNICEF” and ask for a few extra dimes, nickels or quarters. It may seem like a simple concept with a low outcome at first, but thechange does in fact start to add up. Between all of the houses that these charitable Halloween children visit on Halloween night, times the amount of kids participating in the program around the world, the Trick-Or-Treat for UNICEF campaign pulls in quite a bit of donations each year. In 2005, (the year of

trick-or-treat for

By Andres Jimenez

Hurricane Katrina) the program broke a record of $18.25 million from the simple door to door donations on that one Halloween night. In 2010 (the 60th anniversary of the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF program) they raised over $160 million for the festive holiday, and the tradition still lives on every year at Halloween. All of the donations go toward helping kids who need support in their lives.

Back in 1950, Trick-Or-Treat for UNICEF was created to help raisemoney for kids that needed support afterWWII.Since then the project has grown dramatically. The program was featured on TV shows and news casts across the country. In 1994, Key Club International started participating by raising money

at their school and handing out the collection boxes to the kids that wanted to participate in the charity project. Each year they promote more and more people to join the program in homes that they can help with the struggling kids around the world, rather it be with hunger, lack of shelter, sickness, or other worldly issues.

To participate in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, you can go to youth.unicefusa.org to order a trick-or-treat collection box for this Halloween night. You can also text the word “TOT” to UNICEF (864233) to make a $10 donation for the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF project. Pitch to a good cause at Halloween this year and helpmakeadifferenceforkidsinneed around the world. E

Haven’t decided what to do to scare yourself for Halloween this year? Haunted house? Corn maze? Maybe

even just a scary movie montage? If you have done all that, or if you’re just bored of it all, how about you get into this frightening timeofyearwithalittlegamecalledSlender. Slender is a computer game that can be easily downloaded free of charge right offtheInternetontoeitheraPCorMac.Thegame is relatively easy: you find yourselfin a forest and you have to walk around collecting notes that give you vague details on what is actually going on. The notes include messages like “don’t look or it takes you” or “can’t run.” These messages are all crudely scribbled on notebook paper and they can be found in a variety of locations. Youonlyhaveaflashlighttoguideyouandno defense, and after awhile you begin tonotice a bass pulsing in the background. Every once in a while you catch a glimpse of astrangefigure—you’rebeingstalkedbytheSlender Man. The Slender Man has been seen both in games and widely across the Internet, exploding into one of the most recognizable characters ever to venture into the world of mass media. The Slender Man has an interesting history. It first appeared on theSomething Awful forums under a thread called “create paranormal images.” This obviously inspired the artist who took the initial photographs. The photographs are

old black and white but if you look closely a very tall man clad in a black suit with what looks like tentacles coming out of his back is standing somewhere, and the kicker is he doesn’t have a face. These images are believed tohavebeenmadespecificallyfortheforumand edited to create horror photographs that look, for the most part, shockingly realistic. Many have tried to match the Slender Man to old legend and folk lore but most have been unsuccessful. The inspiration seems to eitherbetotalimaginationoraspin-offofthefolklore—notthemovie—thetallman. The game itself is quite scary, but you have to play it to understand the fear factor. Spikes in music make encounters all the worse because if the Slender Man gets close enough, static will fill your screen and youare never seen again… that is, until you hit the replay option. Many games have been made by other ambitious horror video game creators like “Slender Asylum” where you are in an insane asylum trying to accomplish the same goal and avoid the same monster. Keep in mind the original game creator has not made any other games, any others that you findarefanbased.Newshasbeen releasedand confirmed thatthere will be a commercial version of the game released for P.C. known as “Slender: The Arrival”. The download for the original game can be found at parsecproductions.com/slender. E

Halloween frights don’t come easy. Neither does the Halloween spirit. To enjoy the day of the dead to its fullest, both spooks and kooks must be equally enjoyed. You need

to be startled out of your chair... but at the same time, be willing to hand out candy to youngsters at the door. Etched In Stone’s annual countdown of the 10 best Halloween movies takes into account both the frights and delights of this Fall-themed scare-fest.

The king of Halloween grows tired of his mundane life of goblins and ghouls, seeking out a new holiday to bring him satisfaction. He is immediately entranced by Christmas and decides to adopt it as hisown, alongwithputtinghisownspecialspinonit.

A six-year-old Michael Meyers (Will Sandin) murders his older sister on Halloween night in 1963 and is sent away to be mentally hospitalizedfortherestofhislife.Fifteenyearslater, however, hebreaks out and returns to his hometown, thirsty for blood. Laurie Strode (JamieLeeCurtis) begins seeingamysteriousfigure in awhite mask everywhere she goes, beginning on Halloween day, and soon realizes she is in a chase for her life. Never underestimate the horrors a psycho can conjure.

The sleepy town of Springwood, Ohio is shaken by a madman, Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), who murders 20 children. But whenheisreleasedbecauseofalegalfluke, angeredparentsburnhim alive. As revenge, Freddy returns and begins murdering the children of Elm Street in their dreams. Dare to wish for Nancy Thomson’s (Heather Langenkamp) survival, and whatever you do, don’t fall asleep.

6. The Shining (1980)Estes Park isn’t just home to alpine slides and scenery. It’s also home to the Stanley Hotel, the historic set for Stanley Kubrick’s bone-shatteringpsycho-thriller,The Shining. Based on the novel by acclaimed horror author Stephen King, Jack Nicholson’s role as Jack Torrance has widely been referred to as one of the most horrifying characters of all time.

Don’tOuija board alone. Ever. Some argue thatThe Exorcist is the scariest film evermade. Even though its 40th anniversary is coming up soon, the haunting images of the spider scene, six-year-old Linda Blair’s grizzly voice and the actual exorcism still pierce as though they were released yesterday.

7. Exorcist (1973)

Based on the original series from the 1960s, this Halloween haunt will have the well-known theme song blaring through your mind for days. While director Barry Sonnenfeld’s creation is more comedy than horror, the ever-present theme of Halloween will be sure to put you in the trick-or-treat mood.

8. Addam’s Family (1991)

Own a home? Have useless humans living in it? Sounds like it’s time to hire the “bio-exorcist”… Beetlejuice. Taking a play on the modern Halloween movie with an all-star cast and an abundance of holiday-themed jokes, if Beetlejuice doesn’t leave you ready to go outsideandstealsomecandy,thennofilmwill.Thatisjustafact.

Like grandmother, like granddaughter. Marnie Piper (Kimberly Brown) discovers she has magical powers and is insistent on following her grandmother to Halloweentown. There, Marnie and her brother and sister explore the many wonders of the town, as well as being confronted by the dark forces of Halloween. When an evil begins to thrive in Halloweentown, many things begin to turn for the worse and Marnie is needed by her grandmother to help defeat it. A lighthearted side of Halloween is discovered as theresidentsofHalloweentownfighttosavetheinnocenceoftheirholiday.

Charlie Brown is at it again, but this time, he’s failing at Halloween. He and the gang go out trick or treating for rocks and have a blast at their annual Halloween party. Except for Linus of course, who decides to wait in the pumpkin patch for the Great Pumpkin with a lovesick Sally. There is always something special to be found in a Charlie Brown holiday, and Halloween is surely no exception.

Nothing screams Halloween more than one of the most popular horrorfilmsofall time. InScream, teenagersarepickedoff, oneby one, by a death-loving psychopath. The question is… Who is he? The mystery and constant suspense puts the 1996 blockbuster Scream as Etched in Stone’s pick for the best Halloween movie of all time. E
