Silent plane would cut airport noiseplane they say could cutthrough the air withpractically no soundbothering those below, thanks to its unique shapeand design features tolimit engine noise.

The design adds a newtwist to aviation’s longhistory of mixed successdeveloping flying wingsdesigned to be more fuel-and space-efficient thanconventional aircraft withlong, narrow fuse-lages.

The design, to beannounced in a newsconference at the RoyalAeronautical Society inLondon, would blendfuselage and wingstogether so that the entireairframe provides lift —an approach that to datehas been confined largelyto payload-carrying mi-litary aircraft such as long-range bombers.

The body shape of the“silent aircraft” wouldallow for a slower landingapproach and takeoff tocut airport noise — a formof environmentalpollution that makes itpolitically unpopular toexpand airports and flightschedules.

“The ‘silent aircraft’can help address thisconcern and thus aid inmeeting the increasingpassenger demand for airtransport,” said EdwardGreitzer, and professor ofaeronautics at theMassachusetts Institute ofTechnology.

TEHERAN, 6 Nov— Iran said on Sunday it wouldconsider entering talks with the United States onsecurity in Iraq if it received an official request.

Talks between Washington and Teheran areexpected to be one option for quelling violence in Iraqto be suggested in a report due out from the Iraq StudyGroup, a US bipartisan commission headed by formersecretary of state James Baker.

But the idea has previously been rejected by USPresident George W Bush. The United States accusesIran of aiding the insurgency and stoking sectarianstrife in Iraq, a charge Teheran denies.

Asked if Iran should talk directly to the UnitedStates about security in Iraq, Teheran’s ForeignMinistry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said:“If they officially ask for that, it will be reviewed byIran.

“At the present time, some American and Iraqiofficials have raised the question of a dialogue. If wereceive such a request we are ready to examine it.”

The United States broke official ties with Iran afterthe 1979 Islamic Revolution.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice last monthhinted that Washington might join talks with Teheranto resolve the Iran nuclear issue, but only if the IslamicRepublic first suspended uranium enrichment, something Iran has repeatedly refused to do.

In an editorial, theTimes criticized theRepublican-led Congresson matters from tax cuts toenergy policy, and chargedit has failed to hold USPresident George W Bushaccountable for theunpopular Iraq War.

“This election isindeed about George WBush — and the congres-sional majority's insistenceon protecting him from the

consequences of hismistakes and misdeeds,”the Times editorialized.

The Bush Admini-stration has had a numberof clashes in recent yearswith the Times, particularlyfor the newspaper'sdisclosure of its warrant-less domestic spyingprogramme.

The newspaper, founded in 1851, wrote inits editorial: "On Tuesday,

when this page runs the listof people it has endorsedfor election, we will includeno Republican con-gressional candidates forthe first time in ourmemory.”

“To begin with, theRepublican majority thathas run the House ofRepresentatives — and forthe most part, the Senate —during President Bush'stenure, has done a terrible

job on the basics,” thenewspaper wrote.

“It’s tax-cutting-above-all-else has wreckedthe budget, hobbled themiddle class andendangered the long-termeconomy.

It has refused to faceglobal warming and donepathetically little about thecountry’s dependence onforeign oil,” the Timesadded.

MADRID, 7 Nov — David Beckham iswaiting to see if he can regain his placein the Real Madrid first team beforedeciding if he will extend his contractwith the club, according to the sportingdirector Predrag Mijatovic.

"We want to renew his contract andwe have had several meetings with hispeople," Mijatovic told Spanish televi-sion Sexta on Sunday night.

"On our part there is no problem, butwe have to listen to the player too.

"He has been unlucky in that he hasn'twon any trophies in the last three yearsand he is a little sad because he isn'ttaking part as much as he would like."

The former England captain joinedReal from Manchester United on a four-year contract in 2003 but his arrivalcoincided with a downturn in fortunesfor the Primera Liga side who have notwon a major trophy since.

A fixture in the Real first team for thepast three seasons, the 31-year-old haslost his place since Italian coach FabioCapello took charge of the team and has

started just three of his side's nine leaguegames in the present campaign.

"The situation could change, but wecan't guarantee anyone a place in the firstteam," said Mijatovic. "He wants to con-tinue, but as long as he is playing. Hewants to wait a little longer to see if hegets back in the team.— MNA/Reuters
