St.Alphonsus/St.PatrickSchoolNews This weekend our St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School Principal, Mr.RobertPriest, will speak at all of our weekend Masses. Mr. Priest will give an update on this past school year and what to look forward to in the upcoming 2019/2020 school year. Mr. Priest has mentioned on numerous occasions how impressed he is by the dedication and generosity of so many people to our St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School and how successful our Queen of Hearts Raf le and Celtic Fund have become. We are still in need of donations to our Celtic Fund to keep the school thriving for the foreseeable future. If you would like to donate to the Celtic Fund, please check the St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School website: www.stals-stpats.org Tri-ParishDailyMass The Tri-Parish7:30a.m.DailyMass has been celebrated at the other Lemont Catholic churches during the months of June (at St. Patrick) and July (at Ss. Cyril). St. Alphonsus Church will host the Tri-Parish Daily Morning Mass during the month of August. It will begin on Thursday, August 1st in the church. Come join us as we begin each day with prayers and Mass. RenewMyChurchUpdate On Tuesday, July 23rd the Renew My Church Team Members of the four Lemont Catholic parishes (St. Alphonsus, Ss. Cyril & Methodius, St. James and St. Patrick) gathered together to have a “SummerReview” of our Catholic communities. TimWeiske, the Archdiocese of Chicago Director of Strategic Planning and Implementation, and MaryanneKelly, our Lemont Grouping Coordinator, facilitated the meeting. The Grouping Team members from each of the parishes have spent the last six weeks visiting each of the Lemont Catholic Churches and they shared what they noticed as strengths and concerns for each parish. We were also presented with information collected by the Archdiocese that focused on the average number of parishioners that attend weekend Masses at each Lemont Catholic Church and the inancial stability of each parish. In regards to the status of St. Alphonsus Church, our parish has an average of 950-1000 attendance per weekend. That number luctuates in the summer season, like many churches, due to people taking vacations. In regards to our inancial stability, we are doing pretty well. Thanks to generous donations of parishioners and a number of expenses being cut, we have ended each inancial year in the positive sense. In the next few years, we will have to spend some money to make improvements to our parish buildings, including tuck-pointing the church bell tower, improving our church doors and making various minor repairs.

Welcome Guests and Visitors. . . We’re so glad that you’re here and invite you to join us in thanksgiving for God’s action in our lives. Our goal is to provide a spiritual home where all are welcome, where the healing, reconciling, liberating love of God flows through us to all people. In this way, we believe that the Church is the sacrament of God’s saving presence in the world.

“Please come to Mass early enough not to disrupt. Leave late enough not to insult (the Mass does not end until the final blessing).

Worship reverently enough not to distract. Dress proudly enough not to offend.”

Pray for our Team: Fr. Brian

Religious Education Update

Kevin Cody, DRE, 630-257-2371, [email protected], www.st-als.org/rel-edu

REGISTRATION FOR 2019-20 Application forms have been distributed to students. Contact the RE Office if you can’t locate

your form. Rates will increase after August 1st. New families should contact the RE Office to register. We will be happy to assist you in setting

your child on a journey with Christ within a supportive faith community. Visit our website, www.st-als.org, for information on our programs.

RCIA FOR CHILDREN School-aged children who have not been baptized, or in 3rd grade or above and have had no formal religious education are invited to see if this journey in faith is for you. This Children’s Initiation Process introduces young people to the person of Jesus and leads them into full membership in his Church. For more information, contact the RE Office.

THE BEATITUDES FOR FAMILIES – Part 1 The children in our programs hear about the rich teachings of Jesus in the Beatitudes every year. Our approach this past year was to look at them as advice on how to live lives that are holy and filled with joy. The following points take the perspective further and applies them to a family context. 1. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” The poor include both literally poor people, in need of basic necessities, and figuratively poor people, who are aware of their spiritual poverty, people who acknowledge their need and utter dependence upon God. The reward mentioned here is nothing less than the kingdom of heaven. What do we consider to be our family’s greatest riches? 2. “Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Those who mourn could be anyone who is sad or experiencing a loss of any kind. Jesus promises comfort for those who suffer. When we suffer we have a choice to make: we can become bitter, or we can become more compassionate to others in pain. How do we find comfort in our family? 3. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.” The meek are people who are humble and patient. A person who chooses other ways to resolve conflicts without resorting to violence is meek. How do we resolve conflict in our families? 4. “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.” Children have a great capacity to see wrongs and often possess a simple view of complex issues. Perhaps our kids can use their creativity to solve some of the local injustices in schools and communities.

Thisisagreatopportunityforyouanditwillmakeadifferenceinthelifeofachild! We have lead catechist and catechist-aide positions open. Sessions are held on Sunday mornings 8:45 – 10:15, and Wednesday evenings 6:00 – 7:30. The twenty 90-minute sessions begin the last week of September and end the 3rd week of April. We try to have at least 2 catechists to a classroom. You can volunteer as a team or an aide will be assigned. You will receive assistance from a mentor catechist, the RE Of ice, and other catechists. Contact Kevin to explore the possibility.

OUR ABBA The disciples experience Jesus in deep prayer. Asked to teach them how to pray, Jesus gives them his own prayer to the God he knows as Abba. The Lord’s Prayer, slightly different in Luke’s Gospel, contains elements that would be familiar to the disciples. But calling God “Father” was deeply intimate and probably somewhat startling. This is the kind of prayer to which we are called. Jesus teaches us that we, his sisters and brothers, can call God “Our Father”. How powerful these two words are when we pray them together!
