FOREWARD

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to Essentially Dance 2007. Our students have spent this semester meeting the challenges offered to them by each choreographer and their particular genre and process of making new work. This ranges from the sassy jazz of Sue-Ellen Chester-MacCarthy to Csaba Buday's popularising of 70's disco moments. Successful independent artist Vanessa Mafe and I have created fresh contemporary works for our third year students who are touring them to the Tari '07 Festival in Malaysia next month. Completing the evening's programme is an elegant work by our Dean and former Head of Dance, Prof. Susan Streeis a delight for us to have her work with our students and share her extensive experience with them.

We invite you to enjoy the talent and enthusiasm of our young students in this evening of new dance works and thank you for encouraging their development through your ongoing support.

Inspired by late 70's disco, design concepts and movement for Audio Moves- Vol 70 were informed through mine and the dancers research into the era. Movement that was developed, surfaced from drawing on recognisable disco moves, which were then deconstructed and infused with both contemporary and current dance trends. I trust that you will be stimulated by their energy and individualism.

JESUS' BLOOD

Choreography Shaaron Boughen in collaboration with 3rd year students. Music Jesus ' Blood Never Failed Me Yet by Gavin Bryars Costume Design Shaaron Boughen Dancers All third year BFA students

We have remained close to the emotional restraint evident in the music of Gavin Bryars which was inspired by a fragment of a religious song sung by an old tramp living rough in London. The looped phrase of his voice creates the minimalist form of the work and we constructed the movement content around the mix of pain , faith and optimism that the words and tramp's circumstances present.

I first saw this talented group of dancers perform at Dance Grad, November 06 in a work by Csaba Buday. An extraordinary group both in terms of their talent and unity as a group, which is rare to find in first year undergrad students. I was delighted to be asked to work with the group for Essentially Dance. The idea informing this work is taken from the words 'much unhappiness has come into the world because of things left unsaid'. I was interested to explore the subtlety in both these words and the many renditions of the song Hallelujah. The dancers have been delightful to work with and I thank them for their commitment, work and ideas during the creative process. My thanks also to Evan Jones for his dedicated assistance in bringing this work to the stage.

The initial inspiration for paper tears, paper tears is the simple exercise book. OUT's third-year dance students have .transformed these books beyond their familiar association with memories of learning at school and manipulated them to create sounds and stepping stones as well as places to record their personal thoughts, images and texts.

It has beeri challenging to w~~with such a large number of students at one time. Consequently, this challenge is reflected in the way paper tears, paper tears has been structured as a series of vignettes exploring the dynamic between individual and group. The majority of the choreographic material stems directly from personal and group improvisations created by the students themselves. The work was choreographed in silence and on completion, David Pyle composed a score featuring the sounds of the exercise books. Thank you to the students for their invaluable input.

This year's piece started out as something entirely different (well in my mind at least!). I had this idea that, similar to last year's piece, I wanted to dedicate the work to the originators of the Jazz movement, in particular the great Earl 'Snakehips' Tucker, but things just started to run their own course yet again! I began reflecting upon how dancers so often receive the strangest reactions when they mention their profession. Quite often the reaction is either smothered in sexual innuendo or at the other extreme, absolute delight because 'you're a ballerina' of course!? In my case the latter was never considered because, 'well, you're not built like a ballerina are you?' Basically, there's usually no middle ground, you either fall into the category of 'Good' girl or 'Bad' girl! It often seems the case that if women start to move their bodies in certain ways there's bound to be a rather strong reaction! David Byrne (of Talking Heads fame) once wrote 'the world rotates on a woman's hips', lets face it... a woman's hips are capable of some mighty powerful magic!!
