Europe under a Gerontological Bursary awarded by the National Council of Jewish Women.

British Columbia As the result of an agreement with the

Department of Agriculture, responsibility for the milk sampling program, carried on in British Columbia for many years by the Provincial Health Branch, is being turned over to the former department. Steady improvement in the quality of milk, a continuing decrease in the amount of raw milk sold and a reduction in the incidence of illness associated with milk are all factors that have lessened the urgency for close

attention to the milk situation by the Health Department. The new arrangement will make more time available to the sanitary inspectors for the increasing volume of newer problems in the sanitation field.

Staff Changes Dr. W. L. Marshall has been appointed director of the North Fraser Health Unit

ESSENTIALS OF HEALTHIER LIVING ( second edition). Justus J. Shiffers. John Wiley & Sons , New York. 1963. 361 pp., $7.75. The Essentials of Healthier Living, now

in its second edition, is a realistic college text in personal and community health. It also covers education for family living, mental health, and personal and community

health hazards. The text has a distinct view- point in that it deals with health rather than disease. The author emphasizes the broad outlook towards health education and treats of man in his total environment, physical, biological, social and geographical. Dr. Schiffers has once again presented a basic text for college health instruction, admirably illustrated and moderately priced.

TEACHING PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. Maryhelen Vannier and Mildred Foster. W. B. Saunders Company , Philadelphia. 1963 . 429 pp.

This, the third edition of a well known book on physical education, contains many significant changes from the preceding edi- tions. These new chapters which have been added include physical development and youthful fitness. All the previous chapters have been enlarged and contain much new material. The lists of suggested readings at the end of each chapter serve as a means of supplementing the materials given in the text.

The book is well illustrated and should be generally useful to those engaged in phy- sical education programs designed for young people.
