About this ebook
The purpose with this ebook is to let you explore more of the Open Dm Tuning landscapes by presenting
over 100 chords with diagrams.
The ebook is sparse in sense of colors and has a simple layout, which is made with the print possibility in
mind.
Tune in into Open Dm Tuning
If you are unfamiliar to how to tuned to the Open Dm Tuning, the guitar should be tuned as D-A-D-F-A-D
from lowest (thickest) to highest (thinnest) string.
To include an octave perspective, the tuning could be written as D2-A2-D3-F3-A3-D4, meaning that the
lowest string is a D note on the second octave, the second lowest string is a A note on the second octave and
so on.
Always tune down (decreasing string tension) and not up (increasing string tension). This is important
because too much pressure will break the strings, and in the worst scenario, damage the guitar.
Open Em Tuning
Related to the Open Dm Tuning is the Open Em Tuning (E-B-E-G-B-E). By putting a capo on the second
fret, you can play all the presented chords two positions up in the Open Em Tuning.
Double paralleling of low and high strings
The Open Dm Tuning have three strings tuned to D and two strings tuned to A. And in the same way as the
standard tuning has a low and high E, Open Dm tuning has low and high D and A strings.
This means that chords can be mirrored. The chord 100000 can be 000001, the chord 010000 can be
000010 and so on.
To illustrate this, here are some chords which are identical from a tone perspective:
Dm6: 000020 or 020000
Bbmaj7/D: 020000 or 000020
A7/D: 002240 or 042200
In the chord charts, you won’t find all possible variants, but it can be useful for you to know that you can
mirror some of the chords like this. All chord will not be mirrored this way though. Although, the notes are
the same, the note order can cause different chord names. For example, Dm: 300000 and Dm/F: 000003.

Fretboard diagram including frets 1-12 and open strings for Open D tuning (flats are used instead of sharps;
C# = Db etc.).
Understanding the Open Dm Tuning
What happens in the Open Dm Tuning?
Open Dm Tuning has many similarities to the Open D Tuning, only one string deviate. The similarities
become obvious in comparison:
Open D D A D F# A D
Open Dm D A D F A D
So, if you are familiar with Open D, you can recast much of that knowledge to the Open Dm tuning.
Voicings
The three-part section with voicings shows one of the main features of open tunings. Using different shapes
that are moveable but still include open strings is one of the most grateful ways of utilize I open tunings.
The first part presents some very simple approach including one- and two-finger chords. The one-finger
chords are created by playing single notes from the D Minor scale on various strings together with the
remaining strings open. All these shapes can be combined with 000000 (Dm played with all strings open)
in various progressions.
The two-fingers chords (000202 etc.), can be “added-on”, which can be seen in the series with 200202 et
cetera. Apparently, there is room for additional experimentation.
