Profile ProjectAP Language

The objective of this assignment is to enable you to write a well-constructed profile research paper of some aspect within your chosen career field. What you profile should be of some significance, and a partial goal of the assignment will be to convey that significance. You might profile: someone within that career field, use of some new technology within that field,

a specific organization or company, some guiding theory within the field, some controversy within the field, etc. Do not profile the career broadly. Focus your profile on some narrow aspect of that career. If interested in teaching you might look at a specific educational theory, using a specific form of technology in the classroom, etc. You will research your chosen subject and how the subject is of importance.

Your profile should: Establish your subject as interesting and significant to you and

your audience. You may choose to engage a specific target audience, but should still construct your profile so a general audience can understand it.

Contain any necessary background information your reader will need to understand your subject.

Provide an interesting angle to engage your reader. You are welcome to use creative writing tools we will develop over the course of this unit.

Optional: Include a firsthand account. You might conduct and incorporate into your essay a one-on-one interview with someone related to your subject. (A family member, a professional, the program director of a non-profit, etc.).

Make use of engaging details. These should include, but are not limited to: facts, statistics, sensory details, dialogue, anecdotes, and testimonials. All these details should convey and reinforce your subject’s significance.

In this project, you will need to compile and use several sources including: Optional: An interview. Documents such as journal entries, pictures, and artifacts. At least three books or journal articles that relate to the topic at hand. A visual(s) that clarifies specific points about your topic. Any other types of evidence that you can think to include.

The audience for this assignment should be those who would naturally have an interest in your subject. This might be a general audience or more specifically limited to those within a specific career field. Keep in mind the

rhetorical triangles as you conduct your research and compose your paper. It will help to rhetorically analyze sources in order to select the most useful and to present them in the best way.

Your essay should include the following parts:

Introduction : this is where you introduce the subject you have researched and let your readers know what your standpoint is on the topic’s significance. Be sure to include an explicitly stated thesis.

Body : o Contextualize: what is it that you have chosen to research? Why?

Is there a specific time period, historical or political context, or geographical location that is important?

o Provide evidence from the resources you have collected to support your claim

Conclusion : this is where you restate the claim you have made about how the researched has impacted you and their overall significance. While your main purpose is to inform, you may also choose to offer advice to, or move into how this will impact the future.

Works Cited : All sources must be cited using MLA format.

Length: five to eight typed double spaced pages of text, which does not include copies of pictures, letters, journal articles, and interviews, which must also be included.

As part of this project you will briefly present (four to six minutes) on your topic. For this presentation you are encouraged to incorporate visual aides (handouts, PowerPoint, Prezi, short videos, etc). As part of your presentation you are also responsible for leading a short discussion (one to two minutes) with the class based on your presentation.
