What does appropriate play look like for your children?

How oen have you watched your children playing and

wondered about when is the right me to intervene and when

do you let them connue? When does rough play turn into

something more harmful? How do we ensure rough play is

done in a safe environment? What role can this have in

providing genuine movaon for reading and wring? These were some of the quesons which were discussed on

Tuesday as two of our early years educators, Joanne Chang

(Kindergarten Team Leader) and Steve McCallum (Technology

Integrator), presented an interacve workshop on play and

play themes in the early years. Some of the main points of this

    presentaon were:

A violent play theme is diff erent than violence. Violence

carries an intenon to cause harm. Play is enjoyable for all

those parcipang and can at mes have a violent play

theme, but no actual harm is intended.

Sociodramac play is one of the key ways children explore

the world. It is important to respect and value the interests

children bring to play, even though that might include

weapons, superheroes or rough play. Through valuing

these interests we seek to help them beer understand

    the world.

Rough and tumble play is a natural tendency, especially for

many boys. Many young children need this type of play as

it helps develop their social skills.

Potenally we are stopping a large vehicle for potenal

reading and wring content for some of our children bysteering them away from certain themes. How do we

movate some writers, if we are not allowing them to

express themselves through ‘superheroes’ or stories

involving some form of physical contact.

There are no black or whites here, but more shades of grey, as the skill of a master teacher is to know when is too much,

and when is it appropriate, in order to promote genuine enthusiasm for expressing themselves, be it through their play

    or through their wrien word.

    Con nued from page 1

“If I prohibit the shoong game, they’ll just lie and tell me that

they’re poinng fire hoses instead of guns. But if I help

them make rules for respecng each other and playing the

game safely, they will have a tool they can use anywhere,

whether teachers are watching or not.”

Under Deadman’s Skin: Discovering the Meaning of Children’s

    Violent Play, Jane Katch, 2001

“...as playing with blocks does not indicate that a child will

grow up to be an architect or builder, and playing with cars and

trucks does not foretell the future auto mechanic or truck

driver, so playing with toy guns tells nothing about what a child

will do and be later in life. Second, one may reasonably expect

that if through gun play a child feels that he can protect

himself, and if he discharges many of his aggressive tendencies, then fewer of these will accumulate and require dangerous

ways of discharge in later life.”

    From e Clinic

    Tetanus (Lockjaw) Vaccination

Tetanus (Lockjaw) is caused by the Clostridium Bacterium. Their spores are resistant

permanent forms which are found worldwide in garden soil or dust.

The disease causes painful ghtening of the muscles, usually all over the body. It can lead

to "locking" of the jaw so the vicm cannot open his mouth or swallow. Tetanus leads to

death in 50% or more of all cases.

As a teen or adult, do I need this vaccine?

Everyone needs protecon from tetanus. If you have not had a booster shot in 10 years or

more, you should receive a tetanus shot. However, you should get the Tdap vaccine (the

tetanus booster that also protects against pertussis) as soon as possible if you have not yet

received it. You can get Tdap no maer when you last got a Td booster shot.

It is good pracce and clinic roune to give a booster shot without delay aer the slightest scratch acquired outdoor, if the per‐

son is not protected. This can be quite disrupve if travelling. Smaller hospitals outside the NCR oen do not carry the vaccine.

With any medicine, including vaccines, there is a chance of side eff ects. These are usually mild and go away on their own. Serious

reacons are also possible but are rare.

Sign up for the 2015 Vaccinations:

To be protected against tetanus it needs a booster every 10 years, aer compleng a series of 5 shots during childhood. You should

get the Tdap vaccine (the tetanus booster that also protects against pertussis) in any case as soon as possible if you have not yet

    received it.

    their children.

If you know already that you are deparng in June, please inform Admissions of this as soon as possible. By doing so,

you are making life much easier for incoming families. The deadline for informing us of your planned departure is May

22nd. Please note that past pracce is that those who let us know they are leaving aer this date will forfeit $1000 of

    their Facilies Upgrade Deposit.

The school year is galloping toward the finishing line, and we are looking forward to examinaons, performances and
