A NOT SO „SECRET” WAY TO MANIFEST SOMETHING IN

YOUR LIFE* 

If you ever wondered what is the content of the expression „the law

of attraction” I must admit that you are not the only one. There are many

who do not understand it, and because they do not understand it they also

do not accept. After the great success of the film „The Secret” the scientific

term „law of (universal) attraction” received a new meaning. This meaning

is based on the Newtonian conception that all physical bodies attract

themselves. Starting from this understanding, the film introduces the idea

that not only bodies attract themselves but also that our conscience or spirit

is able somehow to „attract” something. Actually it was not this film that

created this transfer of sense. There were many New Age books before that

 promoted such a conception, and all of them have had the Christian faith

 behind them. According to it our faith can literally „move the mountains”

or expressed differently to „attract” mountains, bringing them from a

faraway distance into a near space.

In time, of course, the expression got a more metaphoricalunderstanding: people who had faith actually did not wait for the mountain

to change its spatial place, but however they waited for some kind of

miracles, as healing of incurable illnesses, winning a war, etc.  –   namely

their faith was intertwined with a very intense hope that the development in

 process will have a positive end.

An attempt to give a scientific basis to this idea was brought by Carl

Gustav Jung. He introduced the term „synchronicity” to point to the fact

that when we think very intensely about something there is a great chance

to meet this „something” in our experience, although actually the chancesare very low. He confessed that even if he observed very often this fact

during the years, he avoided speaking about this issue, because he feared

that he would lose his scientific prestige. However, toward the end of his

life he accepted expressing himself publicly about this fact and he wrote a

short book about synchronicity. Of course since its publishing, this book

was permanently surrounded by fervent polemics. The most criticized

aspect was that he did not succeed to define well enough his terms, and

thus he could not show which were the mental „contents” and which were

the outer events that corresponded with each other. If you think about a

theatre it is not sure that you will encounter a building or just an actor or

something else related to the word „theater” or to an image of it. And when

the possible area of the real events that correspond to your mental contentis so broad, then, say critics, there cannot exist any univocal (that is

scientifically testable) correspondence between them.

There exists however also another meaning of this „law of attraction”

that we use every day: our belief that by persistence we can attain our

goals. Frankly speaking, this is more a prejudice, but still it works very

well and it has also many results. Someone who studies for years preparing

himself for a future career stands a chance to fulfill his dream. I think this

meaning of the law of attraction deserves a more detailed discussion. If we

would not entertain steadily the hope that doing so many efforts we will

reach our goal someday, our entire social life would be impossible. We

educate our children in this sense and we are also the result of this

educational idea. The modern paradigm acquainted us with the benefits of

education that prepares us for the increasingly complex social life.
