T wo large camels havebecome a familiar sighton Elliots Beach inNamma Chennai and

onlookers may feel thattheres something wrong

with the picture of camels ina city like ours.In Mumbai, the owners

who are using these camelsfor joyrides would havebroken the law. Accordingto the Prevention of Crueltyto Animals Act (PCA Act),Section 11 - camels andhorses may not be used onthe beach in Mumbai. Cam-els are desert animals, andsea air damages their lungs.

Like Mumbai, Chennai isalso a coastal city and thesame logic must apply. However, they have beenforcibly relocated to an en-

    vironment thats destroyingtheir organs.

Many camels give rides topeople until old age makesit difficult.

They are then promptlyshipped off to slaughterhouses where they are re-paid for a lifetimes service

with a painful death.Rule 3 of the Preventionof Cruelty to Draught andPack Animals Rules (1965)states that these guidelines(see box) should be followedin the case of working ani-mals, keeping in mind theirbiological requirements. However, enforcement ofthe law is a challenge.

What members of thepublic can do is to refuse totake joyrides on thesemagnificent animals andtell children that they be-long to rescue centres in de-serts like Rajasthan.

Arunaway aircraft reportedly took off on itsown when the pilot was not able to get intothe cockpit after swinging the front propeller.

The incident left hundreds of visitors at theair show horrified, when the classic biplane ranin circles on the ground at speeds of up to60mph before taking off and flying on its ownfor 200m.

The plane then crashed into trees at the edgeof Goodwood airfield, and it is believed thathad it cleared the trees, it could have flown foraround 150 miles on a full tank of fuel.

The aircraft, a 1940 model built in the style ofa Tiger Moth, had foam sprayed on it by Good-wood staff to stop it from catching fire after thecrash.

The Stampe was one of a number of aircraftat the airfield for the Goodwood Breakfast Club,a monthly event, which displays vintage cars, motorbikes and aircraft for enthusiasts.

Malcolm Phillips, 67, of Emsworth, Hants, was at the event and took pictures of the planecoming down to the ground behind the trees.

There were hundreds of people therewatching as the plane ran amok, haring roundin circles, the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

We didnt know which way it was going togo and it was worrying that it could head to-

wards the crowd, other planes or the club-house, he said.

Normally the idea is that you swing the pro-pellers and have the handbrake on and chocksunder the wheels, he said.

You also need to make sure the throttle isonly set at low revs.

Something clearly went wrong and itjumped over the chocks - I suspect what mighthave happened is that the throttle becameloose, he added.

anchester United are indanger of losing theirgrip on the ChampionsLeague after the holders

were held to a 2-2 draw by Portoin Tuesdays quarter-final firstleg.

Sir Alex Fergusons side lookedto have earned a barely deservedvictory when Carlos Tevezstabbed United into the lead withfive minutes to play at OldTrafford.

But Porto substitute Marianoequalised four minutes later togive the visitors just reward for animpressive display and leaveUnited almost certainly needingto become the first English side to

win at Portos stadium next week.Jesualdo Ferreiras side had

gone ahead early in the first halfthrough Cristian Rodriguez and

could have been further in frontbefore a calamitous mistake fromBruno Alves set up WayneRooneys equaliser.

After staging a dramaticlate fightback to beat As-ton Villa on Sunday, Fer-guson had expected themomentum from Federi-co Machedas winnerto give his playersenough adrena-line to ignore

their aching limbs as they re-turned to action 48 hours later.

He couldnt have been morewrong. Although they enjoying a

record-breaking run of clean-sheets earlier this season, Unit-eds defence has sprung a fewleaks in recent weeks.

They looked no more secure inthe opening minutes here. Lisan-dro Lopez, Portos Argentinestriker, almost took advantage ashe sprinted past Jonny Evans andforced Edwin van der Sar into asprawling save.

Porto attacked Uniteds softcentre again in the fourth minuteand this time they were able topunish another sloppy piece ofdefending.

When Cristiano Ronaldo lostthe ball, Lucho Gonzalez crossedtowards Rodriguez, but Evans

should have cleared easily. In-stead he scuffed only as far as Ro-

driguez, who drove a fine lowstrike past van der Sar intothe far corner.

    Porto could have had a

second goal if Rodriguez steered his close-range headether side of van der Sar insteastraight at the Dutch keeper

While United laboured, Plooked impressive whenever

went forward and van der Sarat full stretch to turn over a lrange shot from Raul Meirel

After watching such a lustre effort from his players, guson must have been temto give them the full hairdtreatment at half-time.

United responded at last Rooney produced a superb from 30 yards that Helton managed to tip over. From thsulting corner Vidic headed g

wards but Helton made a brillstop to deny the Serbian.

The Portuguese champkept their nerve and Lisand

skimming strike needed an stop from van der Sar beforeCissokho tested the United ker from long-range.

This was no way for Unitecelebrate their 100th home gin the European Cup and Feson made his last two chanopting to leave Italian sensaMarcheda on the bench and son Tevez and Gary Neinstead.

Tevez made an instant impIn the 85th minute Rooflicked on Nevilles throw andvez showed great determinato turn the ball home fclose-range.

    But Porto refused to accep

feat and staged the kind of matic finale that United hmade their trademark.

Lisandro swept over an minute cross that OShea conly help on to Mariano andPorto substitute stabbed his over van der Sar. It was no mthan Porto deserved.

This team have shown the whole season they are mentally very strong and when they havetheir backs to the wall, these young players always find an answer and never give up. I believe

we have created momentum. We are a very young team, but are capable of focussing. Arsene Wenger, Arsenal manager

Jeev Milkha Singh already feels like a winner at the Masters, having been pairedalongside 14-time major champion Tiger Woods for the first and second rounds ofthe years first major.

The reigning Asian Tour number one has already enjoyed prac-tice rounds with Australian star Greg Norman and IrelandsPadraig Harrington and exchanged greetings with ArnoldPalmer this week at Augusta National Golf Club.

Now Singh gets a dream draw with Woods andUS veteran Stewart Cink, even though it willmean a horde of spectators following the trioacross the course.

Its a pleasant surprise, said Singh, who has

played with Woods previously in Asia.Im excited about that and looking forwardto it. Itll be great to have the opportunity to play

with Tiger and itll be interesting. Ill be a little nervousbut Ill try to make the most of it and enjoy it.

Singh, 37, sees himself belonging among the worldselite players after taking his second Asian Order of Merittitle last year and his first top-10 in a major at last yearsPGA Championship.

Its great to come back to the Masters. Every time you arehere, its different, Singh said. Its something really special.Im playing well and well see what happens.

My next goal will be to win a major. I think Ive got thegame to win a major. I feel it all depends on the mind-set and how you deal with the pressure.

I feel I do have the game and hopefully beforemy golfing career is over, I will have a majorunder my belt. One day you never know

    what will happen.

Singh, ranked 31st, has six AsianTour wins plus four in Japan andtwo triumphs in Europe.

Ive worked hard and thereis more trust in my game andmore trust in my golf swing,Singh said. Im always look-ing forward to the biggerevents.

Thats why we play golf for, to prove myself at thehighest level. Practicing with Norman gave Singh a tasteof what he might experience in October as a member of theInternationals at the Presidents Cup, when Norman will cap-tain the non-European side against a US squad.

Ive always looked up to him and often watched him play,Singh said. I had a good nine holes and we talked about generalstuff but didnt touch anything about the Presidents Cup. I guess he

wants to get to know the International players and I was fortunateenough to play with him.

Hollywood actor Tom Cruise wants his two-year-old daughterSuri to have a well-rounded upbringing. So he is spending $1million on her education.

Suri will turn three on April 18 and both Tom and his wifeKatie Holmes, who want her to be an all rounder, have madearrangements not only for her basic education but have also in-vested in dancing, foreign language and art classes.

It doesnt matter what Suri is doing, Tom wants her to be able

to do it better than any other child. All parents think their kidsare special, but Tom and Katie firmly believe that their daughteris gifted, chinadaily.com quoted a source as saying.

Suri has shown interest in dancing, so Tom and Katie areencouraging her as much as possible. She practices ballet, tap and modern dance for hours every day. She also hasprivate gymnastics lessons and is learning soccer, he added.

Cruise is also planning to send Suri for music classes toimprove her musical aptitude.

Piano and violin lessons are on the to-do list. Tom andKatie just have to find time in Suris busy schedule, thesource said.

Holmes also likes Suri to mingle with her friends - Vic-toria Beckhams two kids Romeo, six, and Cruz, four -because she believes that socialising with older kids willbenefit her daughters development.

The source said: Katie likes to have the Beckham boysaround, since they are older. She thinks Suri will emulate

what they do and learn even faster.
