Evaluation Q2:How does your media product

represent particular social groups?

By David Brady

Social groups represented? Teenagers – teenagers are represented as being vulnerable, young, irrational people as the main character is a teenager who stabs another teen. We chose to represent teenagers as they are seen as reckless, dangerous and anti-order, however in our film we wanted to embody that and include the idea that they too are vulnerable to stress and mental disorders. Which led our character to become psychotic.

Males – males are represented in our opening as reckless and violent yet also vulnerable. We chose to represent them in this way because it is easy to portray males as violent and reckless, as it is a stereotypical view that males want to fight for dominance. Moreover we wanted to show that even the reckless and violent can suffer too.

Females – females are represented as the weaker sex, as the victim. Although we don’t have a main female character we represent them as weaker as she was killed before the film opening. We choose to do this because we researched and saw that females are usually victims and we conformed to this.

Stereotypes? Gender – Gender was represented in a stereotypical way as the man is dominant as he is the one who is doing the killing, whereas the female is shown as being weaker as she was the first victim. Although we try throughout the opening to convey that the man can be effected by psychological disorders. Which challenges the stereotype as it means that the man is weaker than the girl.

The tear has connotations of being weak or vulnerable. This shows that we challenge the stereotype

Stereotypes Part 2

Teenagers - one stereotype that we conformed to with our teenaged character is the stereotype that all teenagers carry knifes and stabs people. We conformed to this as the weapon our antagonist used was a knife.

Link to target audience?

The social groups that we represented link to our target audience because the main character is around the same age as target audience. We feel that having a teenager main character allows the audience to relate to him and this will help attract more teenagers to see the film. It will hopefully also create a more realistic feel to the film as the audience can relate to some of the stresses that he is suffering from.

Typical clothes and hair styles, that teenaged boys can relate too.
