Dear colleagues,

It is our pleasure to organize an Erasmus Staff week in the state of Bre-men for the third time and being able to welcome you here today.

In 2011 we discussed regional and international models of cooperation; in 2013 our focus was on the internationalisation of university administrati-on. This year we are excited to exchange experiences and good practice examples on how to prepare our students for the international labour market.

We chose this topic for a variety of reasons, but mostly because emplo-yability and entrepreneurship are the key issues of the European Com-mission and are at the same time challenges that many higher education institutions face nowadays. In Bremen we have initiated a number of projects and networks with the aim of offering our national and internatio-nal students a high level of support to get ready for the labour market and we are interested to see how our partner universities handle this topic.

We are also happy to provide you with the opportunity to experience the diversity of the German higher education system. During our Staff Week you will get to know how different or similar a public university, universities of applied sciences and a private university approach the challenges of internationalisation and labour market.

Last but not least, we are proud to share with you the fact that higher education institutions in Bremen are closely cooperating on various topics that go beyond inner institutional interests. Especially the International OfÞ ces run numerous common projects and are jointly represented under the label Universities in Bremen at the EAIE and NAFSA conferences.

We wish you a great and inspiring week andWelcome to Bremen!

UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES BREMEN

With its history dating back to the 14th Century Bremen has come to be known in the world as a famous cosmopolitan city. Keeping up with this tradition, internatio-nalisation is a central characteristic at the University of Applied Sciences Bremen.

The range of degree courses at the traditional institution in the heart of Bre-men Neustadt a central city location is innovative and practically oriented. The Bremen University of Applied Sciences enjoys a long tradition that goes back to 1799. Approximately 8 000 students enrol in 70 degree courses in areas such as engineering, natural sciences, economics and social sciences; about two-thirds are required to complete semesters of study or praxis abroad. The University of Applied Sciences offers 44 Bachelor programmes plus post-graduate opportuni-ties in a number of Master programmes. The structure of study at the Bremen University of Applied Sciences con-forms to common international standards (European Credit Transfer System: ECTS) thereby offering attractive opportunities for study: individual components (modules) may be completed abroad. The University enjoys the beneÞ ts of coope-rative agreements with 300 partners worldwide. The agreements cover mainly the mutual exchange of students and teachers. Further impetus is provided by UAS7, a cooperation of seven German universities to strengthen transatlantic ties, including a New York liaison ofÞ ce in Manhattan. The University of Applied Sciences fosters an intercultural everyday running of the university, where internationalisation is lived and optimal integration of inter-national and national students is achieved. Our aim for these intercultural encounters is to be learning experience and enrichment both of German and international students. Additionally, innovative academic content that will remain relevant in the future in combination with the worldwide validity of the Bachelor and Master degrees ensures that graduates will enjoy excellent career perspectives even abroad.

BREMERHAVEN UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES

The Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences was founded in 1975, but the educational tradition of the institution can be traced back to more than a hundred years ago. Its geographical location directly at the estuary of the Weser and the maritime proÞ le of its 24 study programmes are just two of the reasons, why it is called the "University by the Sea". The maritime characteristic is reß ected, amongst others, in the close co-operation with the industry within the Þ eld of teaching and research. The Master programmes "Wind Energy Technology and "Integrated Safety and Security Management, were established in cooperation with regional companies and are good examples of application and practice-oriented education. The Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences has modern equipped institutes and laboratories. Currently, there are around 3200 students studying on the campus which is located between the river Geeste and the pedestrian zone, situated in the town centre of Bremerhaven, right next to the Alfred Wegener Insti-tute, the Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, the German Maritime Museum, the Historical Museum, the German Emigration Centre and the Klima-haus 8° Ost. Within the framework of the context "Excellent Teaching", launched by Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft, Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences gained an award in 2009 for its concept to strengthen the teaching ap-proach within the university called GUUGLE-Gut und gerne Lernen und Lehren which translates to "learn and teach well and with passion". In 2013 the university gained an award for its study pioneers concept. The project All aboard supports prospective students and students from non-aca-demic families through various measures and special course offer on the way to their successful careers. Also in the Career Service Centre, a central contact point at the university, students receive valued support for work placement and career entry. The CSC provides students with current openings for work placements, degree thesis, holiday jobs or employments. Through personal consultation and special trainings on application process students may improve their professional qualiÞ cations and get into contact with companies already during their studies.

UNIVERSITY OF BREMEN

The University of Bremen was founded in 1971. In the course of its relatively short history it has developed into the science center of North West Germany. When it was founded it broke new ground in many ways, earning the label Bremen Model. Some of these breakthroughs have now become standard features of modern universities. For instance: interdisciplinarity, research-based learning in projects, and social commitment. With 290 professors and around 19,000 students, the University of Bremen is a mid-sized university offering a large spectrum of subjects; 100 different study programs organized in 30 academic disciplines. The University of Bremen is committed to the declaration of Bologna, which aims towards the creation of a European university space. It fosters the exchange of students within the frame of international programs and partnerships on all continents of the world. Internationalisation and diversity have become guiding principles and are reß ected in the international orientation of our study programs. Next to offering study courses in English or implementing obligatory study abroad periods in the curriculum the University of Bremen also encourages faculties to introduce double degree programs. For many years now, the University of Bremen has been among the top league of German universities in the area of research. Research conducted at the University of Bremen is interdisciplinary. In other words: Bremen research tran-scends the borders of traditional disciplines and is embedded within six research concentrations, also known as high-proÞ le areas: Ocean and Climate Research, Materials Science, Information-Cognition-Communication, Social Sciences, Health Science, Logistics. Since June 2012, the University of Bremen is one of eleven German univer-sities entitled with the label University of Excellence.
