In order to enhance the international dimension of its educational programmes and to facilitate student exchanges with universities abroad, the Faculty of Law of the University of Florence has recently introduced an English language component in its law curriculum. During the academic year 2012/2013, the Faculty will offer four courses entirely taught in English. More info on http://www.giuris.unifi.it/ls-42-corsi-in-lingua-inglese.html.

ECTS The University of Florence does not use the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) yet. It uses the CFU (Credito Formativo Universitario) system. See pdf ‘Information for Erasmus exchange 2012’.

Language requirements

The University of Florence strongly advises foreign incoming students to achieve a sufficient knowledge of Italian language before arriving to Firenze. They believe that it is difficult to fruitfully attend courses not having a knowledge of Italian language corresponding at least to the B1 level (oral and written).

Courses

Programmes of study, or courses, are made up of modules, and each module is valued in credits. A module is usually taught for 2 to 3 hours a week, and requires another 6 to 8 hours private study - a total of approximately 10 hours work a week over 15 weeks. The home university should discuss with the student how many modules they

wish him/her to study and should advise him/her if they have any specific requirements. LJMU does not advise the student on what modules he/she should choose, this is the student’s own decision. However, you cannot study more than five modules in 1 semester or ten modules for the year. This equates to 120 JMU credits and 60 ECTS credits for the year. The student is allowed to study modules from other schools (max. 2 modules). Courses at LJMU: http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/courses/index.htm

ECTS

In ECTS, normally 30 credits represent the workload of a semester while 60 credits would be awarded for the year. At JMU, students can attain a maximum of 60 credits per semester, which would usually represent 5 for 12 credits each or 120 credits, representing 10 modules for the year. Therefore, you should divide JMU credits by 2 to convert them to ECTS credits. To complete a year’s work successfully, a student has to pass a sufficient number of modules in order to gain 120 credits. However, exchange students do not necessarily have to gain 60 credits per semester, 36 or 48 credits will be sufficient if your university agrees.

Language requirements A very good level of English language competence is required to follow lectures, carry out background reading and research, write essays and dissertations at LJMU. More info on: http://ljmu.ac.uk/International/124733.htm

Student mobility

From Great Britain to Belgium: 4 students Student months: 40 (4x10)

From Belgium to Great Britain: 4 students Student months: 20 (4x5)

Orientation programme All students are required to attend a compulsory three-day induction programme. You will be given essential information on academic, administrative and University procedures and issues. More info: http://ljmu.ac.uk/International/index.htm

Accomodation

Liverpool as a city currently has plenty of private student housing available for all students. However, LJMU does not have any University owned Halls of Residence which means the accommodation office (details below) can provide assistance but cannot secure accommodation for you directly. TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language

http://www.ets.org/toefl What is TOEFL?

The 'Test of English as a Foreign Language', or TOEFL evaluates the ability of an individual to use and understand English in an academic setting. Sometimes it is an admission requirement for non-native English speakers at many English-speaking colleges and universities. Additionally, institutions such as government agencies, licensing bodies, businesses, or scholarship programs may require this test. The TOEFL test is a registered trademark of Educational Testing Service (ETS) and is administered worldwide. It is the most widely accepted English-language test in the world, including more than 8,000 colleges, universities, agencies and other institutions in 130 countries. And that list includes the top 100 universities in the world. By sending TOEFL scores to your selected university, you will be proving that you are ready for academic success.

You can take the TOEFL test at your choice of more than 4,500 conveniently located test sites in more than 165

countries worldwide. You also save time and money since the entire test is given in one day, rather than coming back a second day like some other tests. In the test, you may read a passage from a textbook and listen to a lecture and then speak or write in response, just like you would in a classroom. Because the test is composed of 100% academic questions and tasks, many universities consider it the most appropriate test to use when making admissions decisions. With the TOEFL test, there's no doubt your score is more objective and reliable, because Speaking responses are recorded and evaluated by three to six ETS raters rather than only one rater from a local testing site. TOEFL iBT® Test (Internet-Based Test) Scores Your scores are based on your performance on the questions in the test. You must answer at least one question each in the Reading and Listening sections, write at least one essay, and complete at least one Speaking task to receive an official score. For the TOEFL iBT® test, administered via the Internet, you will receive four scaled section scores and a total score:

Reading Section (Score of: 0–30)

Listening Section (Score of: 0–30)

Speaking Section (Score of: 0–30)

Writing Section (Score of: 0–30)

Total Score (0–120)

In addition to your scores, your official score record also includes performance feedback that is a reflection of your performance level and a description of the kinds of tasks that test takers within the reported score range can typically do. There is no passing or failing TOEFL® score; individual higher education institutions and agencies set their own score requirements. TOEFL scores are valid for two years after the test date and there is no limit to the number of times you can take the test. TOEFL® Score Scales

Skill Score Range Level

Reading 0–30 High (22–30) Intermediate (15–21) Low (0–14)

Listening 0–30 High (22–30) Intermediate (15–21) Low (0–14)

IELTS: International English Language Testing System

http://www.ielts.org/ What is IELTS?

IELTS is the International English Language Testing System which tests English proficiency across the globe. IELTS tests are held in over 500 centres with tests up to four times a month. IELTS respects international diversity and is fair to anyone who sits the test, regardless of nationality. IELTS tests all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking. The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with a certified Examiner. It is interactive and as close to a real-life situation as a test can get. How are the tests marked? IELTS uses a 9-band scoring system to measure and report test scores in a consistent manner. You receive individual band scores for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking and an Overall Band Score on a band scale from one to nine. The IELTS 9-band scale Each band corresponds to a level of English competence. All parts of the test and the Overall Band Score can be reported in whole and half bands, eg 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0.

Band Level

Band 9 Expert user Has fully operational command of the language: appropriate, accurate and fluent with complete understanding.

Band 8 Very good user Has fully operational command of the language with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriacies. Misunderstandings may occur in unfamiliar situations. Handles complex detailed argumentation well.

Band 7 Good user Has operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings in some situations. Generally handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning.

Band 6 Competent user Has generally effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings. Can use and understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations.

Band 5 Modest user Has partial command of the language, coping with overall meaning in most situations, though is likely to make many mistakes. Should be able to handle basic communication in own field.

Band 4 Limited user Basic competence is limited to familiar situations. Has frequent problems in understanding and expression. Is not able to use complex language.

Band 3 Extremely limited user Conveys and understands only general meaning in very familiar situations. Frequent breakdowns in communication occur.

Band 2 Intermittent user No real communication is possible except for the most basic information using isolated words or short formulae in familiar situations and to meet immediate needs. Has great difficulty understanding spoken and written English.

Band 1 Non-user Essentially has no ability to use the language beyond possibly a few isolated words.

Band 0 Did not attempt the test No assessable information provided.

Who sets the ‘pass’ mark for the IELTS test?

There is no pass or fail in IELTS. Scores are graded on the 9-band system. Each educational institution or organisation sets its own level of IELTS scores to meet its individual requirements.
