    Kia ora tatou ngā whānau,

This week we gathered as our school community to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary and to celebrate our founder Father Garin in our Garin Day Mass. It was wonderful to have Father Bill and Father Seph co-celebrate the Mass. We welcomed parents, whānau and invited guests to share in our celebration of the Eucharist. Prayer for the Assumption of Mary Father in heaven, all creation rightly gives you praise, for all life and all holiness come from you. In the plan of your wisdom she who bore the Christ in her womb was raised body and soul in

glory to be with him in heaven. May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness and join in her hymn of endless love and praise. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Earlier this week I attended the New Zealand Catholic Principals Conference in Christchurch. Meeting with the many Catholic Principals throughout these two days reminded me that our college and our faith community is significant in the broader context of Catholic education within New Zealand and globally. Through our Catholic Special Character and Mission we provide oppor-tunity for our students to explore, learn and grow holistically and in all dimensions of their lives.

Thank you to the Ball Committee and in particular Molly Langelaan for the fault-less planning, organising and decorating. Thank you also to the many staff who supported the Ball making it a very successful night.

Winter sport is drawing to a close with many finals in the various codes being played over the next weeks. We wish all of our sport teams every success as they complete their winter season. Kia ora Garin whānau As you all know, our Garin Health team is made up of several different people. Over the next few weeks we will be introducing ourselves. This week I will begin with myself (Kate the Counsellor) I was born in Christchurch but have lived in Nelson since I was around 9, except for a year when I lived in Australia. I went to Garin College myself and was a foundation student; meaning I was a year 9 the first year the school opened! Mr Stock was my whanau teacher from Year 11! After I worked and traveled a wee bit around New Zealand, and whilst I was living in Australia, I decided it was time for me to come back and study. I did a degree in Social Science (Counselling), and then straight after that did a Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (Primary). I am currently provisionally registered with New Zealand Association of Counsellors, and I have a Provisional Teaching Certification. I have a passion for counselling, and love working with young people, which makes my role here at Garin so awesome! I am here 5 days a week, Mondays from 11am, and Tuesday to Friday 9am to 2.20pm, come and say hey anytime, send me an email, or use our online referral form to book in if you would like to see me - https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdybsJ5zPkJNfT_mz4ki8ido5OXnOasbRNpIsXNUpMGNl8I8A/viewform

From the Sports Desk…… On Thursday, 8th August 17 international students attending

Garin College joined international students from other secondary schools in the region for a day of activities organised by Sport Tasman. Some 170 students representing 18 nationalities attended the day. With a focus on participation and making new friends, the students from Garin College relished the opportunity to participate in three codes, futsal, volleyball and table tennis. A highlight of the event was the shared lunch that reinforced the international flavour of the day.

Congratulations to the Marist/Garin U15 rugby team, who were named winners of the Tasman Rugby Union 'Aim for Fair Play with Armageddon Award'. This outstanding achievement recognises the

exemplary conduct demonstrated by the entire team over the duration of the season. Special thanks to head coach, Mr Eddie Powick for leading by example and building such a positive team culture anchored on the principles of fair play. Well done boys!

    Congratulations

Tegan Nott Tegan has been selected as a finalist in the

Lion Foundation Song Writing Competition - with the Play it Strange competition.

Her Song ‘Slow (This is Janice)’ will be rec-orded for the Play it Strange album.

    Well done Tegan!!!

  • "Faith Facts" Week 4 Term Three Feast of the Assumption & Father Garin Mass Yesterday, as a Garin College & Parish

community we came together to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption and Father Garin Mass. We reflected on Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christ and how she readily accepted God’s great plan for the world. The Feast of the Assumption is the Feast of the Church in Aotearoa. It is a time when we recall the origins of the Catholic Church here in our country when Bishop Pompallier celebrated the first mass on New Zealand soil. Pompallier ded-icated this to the Assumption of Mary.

We also recognised Father Garin who worked tirelessly for our Catholic commu-nity in the Nelson/ Tasman region. Father Garin is an example of what each and every student should aspire to - a call to holiness. This call to holiness is to respond to God’s call to be the best version of ourselves in every aspect of our lives and live with a proud and outward looking faith.

Thank you for Father Bill and Father Seph who led us in our celebration and the community members who supported our young people in their journey of faith.

YOUNG VINNIES IN ACTION This week, the Garin College Young Vinnies travelled to the Richmond

Saint Vincent de Paul Society Centre. The Saint Vincent de Paul Society is an organization devoted to helping people in our community in need, especially the poor. They do so by offering financial support, fuel and food vouchers and a helping hand. One of the ways the Society raises funds is selling second-hand goods. When items are donated, they are sorted by Society members and volunteers, priced and put up for sale. All of the funds raised go back to helping our community.

If you are interested in making a positive difference in our community, making new friends and learning more about the Society’s work consider joining the Garin College Young Vinnies. Meetings are held every Tuesday at second break in R7.

HOW CAN I PRAY? This week we are exploring vocal prayer. The Our Father is probably the most traditional Prayer that has been handed down within the Catholic Church.

All Christian people know it and it is a prayer Jesus taught his Disciples when they asked him how to pray.

There are three parts to the Our Father:

    1. Honouring God,

    2. Praying that people will know and praise the holiness of God’s name.

    3. Co-operate with the Holy Spirit in fulfilling God’s will and allow God to establish the Kingdom of God.

This prayer is a model for all prayer - it can be personal in a group, people are called to praise God, share God's care and pray for the needs of others.

  • "Faith Facts" Week Four - Term Three cont…

Year 13 Religious Education—Ethical Issues and my perspective

Currently, Year 13 students are exploring societal issues and what their opinion on these issues are. We have explored ethical thinking frameworks and have applied these to a current news story. Please read the response of one of our learners below:

The contemporary ethical issue that I will be focusing on is plastic pollution which is currently affecting our planet. Pollution is a huge issue destroying the Earth, and it is completely the fault of humans. There are an estimated 150 million metric tons of plastics circulating our oceans, destroying marine environments and killing hundreds of species daily. Scientists have identified 200 areas declared as ‘dead zones’ where no life organisms can now grow, and 100,000 marine creatures and approximately 1 million sea birds a year die from plastic entanglement (of the ones found). I am basing my opinion on God-based ethics, that something is good because God says it is, and the way to lead a good life is to do what God wants. This is because I believe God is the Creator, who created everything in His image. He made the world for us before He made us, and He wants us to look after it. Genesis 2:15 “Humans are commanded to care for God’s creation.” God made us and He loves us, and we love Him, and I see it as an act of huge disrespect that we are not taking care of the environment He made for us. I also believe we are all equal, and that although humans are the most intelligent beings on the planet, that does not make us superior to animals. They should have the same rights as us. I believe that rather than using our intelligence to continue bettering ourselves and making our own lives better, we should be using it to better the world that we are destroying. I think that humans are selfish in the way we consume, caring more for modern conveniences and how we can improve and make our own lives easier, with no regard to the way our actions consequence and impact ‘lesser’ species. I think there are many ways to improve this dire situation we have created, but the two that I believe would be the most effective are educating the youth and enforcing laws to decrease the consumption/use/manufacturing of single-use plastics.

    Weekly Thought - Pope Francis

It is impossible to persevere (or even begin) in a fervent evangelisation unless we are convinced from personal experience that it is not the same thing to have known Jesus as not to have known him, not the same thing to walk with him as to walk blindly, not the same thing to hear his word as not to know it, and not the same thing to contemplate him, to worship him, to find our peace in him, as not to.

It is not the same thing to try to build the world with his Gospel as to try to do so by our own lights. This is why we evangelise. A true missionary disciple knows that Jesus walks with him, speaks to him, breathes with him, works with him, in essence that life with Jesus Christ is different,

new. A person who is not convinced of this or enthusiastic, and in love, will convince nobody. Pope Francis
