Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray you to grant that all students and teachers at Episcopal High School
may know that which is worth knowing, love that which is worth loving, praise
that which pleases you most, esteem that which is most noble, and dislike
whatsoever is even in thy eyes. Enliven our conscience as you enlighten our
understanding; lest, having tasted the fruits of knowledge, we perish through
our own pride and disobedience. We ask it for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.
–School Prayer adapted from Thomas á Kempis (1380-1471)
Episcopal High School of Baton Rouge is the leading independent school in Baton Rouge. Located on a beautiful 55-acre campus in the southeastern section of the city, it was established in 1965 as a challenging college preparatory school. It now serves students in grades PK-12. The low student/teacher ratio of 11:1 allows a relationship between student and teacher that recognizes the personal needs and individual
levels of achievement of its 930 students. Episcopal is a member of the following organizations: the National Association of Episcopal Schools, the National Association of Independent Schools, the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools, and the Southern Association of Independent Schools.

Dear EHS Community Members,
Each year we take this opportunity to acknowledge our generous and supportive community of donors. The 2012-2013 Gift Report, acknowledging contributions of cash, planned and in-kind gifts to Episcopal High School between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013 (unless otherwise noted), is no different. The positive impact of this generosity is seen each and every day throughout Episcopal. These contributions enrich our school community and encourage others to support our mission. We deeply appreciate the contributions of everyone listed in this Gift Report and those who gave their time and talents in so many different ways this past year. We simply could not do it without you, and look forward to your continued partnership.
With sincere gratitude,
The students, faculty and staff of Episcopal High School of Baton Rouge
4 2012-2013 Gift Report
“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” –Plutarch
Dear Episcopal High School Community Members and Friends,
The annual gift report is, to me, a mirror of sorts. In one sense, the report is a rearview mirror, looking back with favor on the financial gifts to the school. In another more important sense, the active interest in our school by so many donors of time, talent and treasure turns us from the past and confirms the school’s continued success and bright future.
This report reflects, too, the strength and unity of the community that embraces Episcopal. For any independent school over time, the strength of the community will determine the strength and effectiveness of the
school. As I began my fourth year in July 2012 as the “new” head of school, I can say with informed confidence that the Episcopal community’s strength continues to grow and deepen.
A kind word about experiences at Episcopal may, in the most unanticipated of cases, be the most significant contributions any of us can make. Seeking to understand the beauty and purity of the efforts of teachers and staff in their work at Episcopal builds confidence and strength in the ministry and mission of Episcopal. Certainly, maintaining the financial strength of the school allows for more amazing experiences for students. Please accept my personal thanks for all and any of the things you have done in support of Episcopal.
Please look forward with me as we continue to put student development first and foremost and strive to follow Plutarch’s advice to “kindle” the lifelong fire for learning in each student’s mind.
Sincerely,
Hugh M. McIntoshHead of School

6 2012-2013 Gift Report
Dear Friends of Episcopal,
One of the proudest moments of my life came on the night of May 17, 2013. On that night, our daughter Taylor graduated from Episcopal and became the first of a second generation of our family to graduate from this great school. The pride I felt as a father and the honor I felt as Board Chair handing out diplomas to young men and women that I had seen grow through the years was, for me, beyond words. I will carry that memory with me for the rest of my life.
Graduation at Episcopal is such a special event. The students gather with their friends and families on the lawn before the ceremony anticipating the milestone that is before them. The young men are in tuxes and the
young women are in long white gowns, all smiling because they know they are about to begin a new chapter in their lives. But they also realize that this special moment is the culmination of years of friendships, mentorships and personal growth that was nurtured at Episcopal. This foundation has prepared them for the next stage in their life. We should all be proud.
Hugh McIntosh, our Head of School, has done an excellent job leading the school over the past three years. He has worked well with the board, setting us on a course to prosper now and in the future. This year we expanded development efforts initiating the Legacy Gift Program which many board members took a leadership position in joining, we negotiated an extension of our long term debt on favorable terms and we evaluated potential changes to tuition assistance as a means to entice more students to our school. This past year was a successful one and in many ways Episcopal is in an enviable position, but we still face challenges and opportunities that will require us to adapt. The board and Hugh are continually evaluating the correct strategic course to pursue for the long-term benefit of the school.
A Message from Gordon S. LeBlanc, Jr. ‘78 Chair, Board of Trustees

prideAs we consider the strengths of Episcopal, one that consistently stands out is our community of support. Our faculty, support staff and administrative staff have always been committed to our students and they continue to form the backbone of our school. Additionally, our parent organizations volunteer numerous hours and provide dollars to the betterment of the student and teacher experience. And our board, which is comprised of current and past parents, alumni, benefactors and community leaders commit a large amount of their time and treasure to the support and leadership of the school. We are fortunate to have such a great group surrounding our children.
As I close out my second year as Board Chair and rotate into the position of Past Chair, I want to say how rewarding it was for me to serve in this position. Episcopal has had a large and meaningful impact on my life. It gave me a great educational foundation that put me ahead of many of my peers in college. It is where I formed friendships that I value today and it is with great honor that I am now able to give back. Teri and I, like you, believe that giving back to Episcopal is our responsibility and a privilege. We became members of the Good Shepherds of Episcopal Legacy Society this past year and hope you will consider taking a similar step as another way to ensure that Episcopal thrives in the future.
I want to thank all of the Episcopal families for your generous contributions to the school. You are a vital part of the foundation of Episcopal. And before you know it, you too may share that special moment when your child graduates in the Chapel of the Good Shepard. Treasure this experience, as Teri and I will again when our son Andrew stands with his classmates to receive his diploma in 2015.
Sincerely yours,

Mr. and Mrs. G. Allen Penniman, Jr. were recognized as “Leave A Legacy” honorees by Episcopal High School on November 15, 2013, during the National Philanthropy Day event hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. EHS felt it was important to honor Allen and Joanie for their leadership and support for past, present and future generations of Episcopal students.
Allen is among Episcopal's founding members and has been a dedicated volunteer offering a strong level of service since the inception of Episcopal High School in 1965. It is through his commitment to the mission and ministry of EHS that the school continues to be an academically challenging independent school motivating students to excel in and beyond the classroom.
The Pennimans are an exemplary model of how their legacy gifts can have a transformational impact on the lives of students. The first recipient of the Mary Virginia Penniman Scholarship Fund at Episcopal was Lee “Buster” Kantrow in 1988. This endowed scholarship has benefited student scholars for more than 25 years, and the foundation Allen helped to build will continue to benefit future generations of Baton Rouge area students.

“Our youngest daughter, Mae Amanda, graduated on May 17, 2013, following in the footsteps of our son, Denis in 2008, and daughter, Susanna in 2010. We are glad we made the decision to send our children to EHS which continued the legacy of an Episcopal education for a second generation. We have experienced the joy of watching our children achieve success in their undergraduate years and beyond, and this blessing has inspired us to do something for EHS that would positively impact the future—forever.” –Charlotte and George Murrell ‘81

Endowment and other Designated FundsGrowing Our Gifts – the Foundation for the FutureThe Episcopal High School endowment is a permanent, self-sustaining source of funding comprised of various restricted and unrestricted endowment funds. Some endowments have been established through sizable initial gifts, and many have grown or will grow through smaller ongoing gifts. Endowment assets are invested, and each year a portion of the interest earned is paid out to support the fund’s purpose. A strong endowment gives Episcopal High School additional financial strength in order to better serve our students, families and the entire EHS community by ensuring that resources are available to support vital programs and new initiatives.
Endowed, Other Designated Funds and Planned GiftsEpiscopal’s endowment exists from the generosity of donors who are committed to the school’s mission. Donors have provided endowed funds and planned gifts for academics, scholarships, merit awards for outstanding student achievement and capital projects. These visionary leaders care to sustain Episcopal for an ongoing tradition of serving students well while developing leadership for our community’s future.
Episcopal is committed to effective stewardship of its endowment. The Board of Trustees has delegated oversight for endowment investment policy to the Baton Rouge Area Foundation. The Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees is responsible for the endowment spending policy and the establishment of the annual spending rate.
Gifts may be made to previously established endowed funds, and we welcome the opportunity to have a conversation about the endowment or a named endowed fund. Please contact the Advancement Office at 225.755.2714.
For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013, Episcopal’s endowed and designated assets were valued at more than $21 million. Nearly $400,000 was given to Episcopal in the 2012-2013 fiscal year toward endowed and designated funds.

The Robotics Studio became a reality thanks to the philanthropic support of EHS current parents Linda and Dennis Mitchell. Their gift provided for the transformation of the common space in Foster into the “Robotics Studio.” The studio is fully equipped with collaborative work stations, lockable work benches, storage cabinets, tool kits, a high definition display monitor, and special equipment to produce a multidisciplinary learning environment for students. Not only is the studio used for academic lessons and hands-on learning, but extra-curricular activities keep the studio buzzing with “after-hours” learning. Lower and Middle School students use the studio for FLL (FIRST Lego League) where they can design, build
and discover with Lego robots. The FIRST Robotics Team participates in competitions which are referred to as “the varsity sport for the mind.” This upgraded studio provides enhanced space and equipment for the Robotics team to engage in the exciting design and build process for competitions. All of the activities that take place in the robotics studio revolve around Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education, exposing students in meaningful ways to encourage them to consider these fields of study and STEM related careers.
Our students and EHS faculty and staff are grateful for this special gift made possible by the Mitchellfamily.

ON YOURMARKS,SET...GO!
Dear Friends,
Whit and I were extremely honored to serve as the 2012-2013 “On Your Marks, Set…Go” Annual Fund Campaign Chair Family. This past year, EHS staff along with countless volunteers reached out to our constituents for support. Your overwhelming response resulted in not only one of the strongest giving years in school history, but also confirmed your enduring and selfless commitments to the EHS community.
Crucial to the success were the dedicated and tireless efforts of volunteers and EHS staff who participated in
this important EHS initiative. Numerous meetings, hundreds of phone calls, letter writing, e-mails, texts and personal visits all played into the campaign. The power of collective effort was remarkable, making our work enjoyable and rewarding.
The extraordinary generosity of parents, trustees, faculty, grandparents and friends led Episcopal to an unqualified success, having raised more than $968,000, exceeding the $700,000 goal by 38% – a figure we should all be proud of.
Because of your support, we were able to sustain fiscal health by meeting our operating budget and provide the funds needed for construction of The Coach Dupe Trail. Construction of the trail was complete by the start of school. And nothing pleases us more than to hear a whistle blowing with Coach Dupe signaling, “On Your Marks, Set…Go” at the new trailhead!
Annual Fund Campaign
Episcopal’s Annual Fund Campaign is an organized, yearly effort to raise the funds
needed to meet our annual operating budget. These contributions support the
people and programs which make Episcopal so special. This means talented faculty and
staff members, small class sizes, teaching tools, technology and exceptional offerings
in everything from the arts to athletics. In our community, every gift
matters and is important.
Episcopal’s parents, grandparents, parents of alumni, alumni, current students, faculty
and staff and friends all play a key role in supporting the Annual Fund Campaign.
During the 2012-2013 campaign, Episcopal received commitments from
more than 850 donors. Amazing!
Support of the Annual Fund Campaign affirms our belief in the mission and values
of Episcopal, and we are grateful.
“Crucial to the success were the dedicated and tireless efforts of volunteers and EHS staff who participated in this important EHS initiative.”

Because we exceeded our goal, we were able to establish an EHS Athletics Fund, comprised of two components – an Athletic Endowment and a fund that supports our Athletic Facilities. These funds enable us to plan and implement a vision for the future as well as for our current athletic program.
On behalf of EHS and the Annual Fund Campaign Committee, we thank you and salute all donors for your generosity and participation. Your gifts resulted in the success of the 2012-2013 Annual Fund Campaign and enabled us to implement the programs and initiatives that make us a leader among schools in the region and beyond.
With Gratitude,

The Coach Dupe Trail, in honor of Claney Duplechin, Jr.
How often do you have the opportunity to enhance the future
by building on the rich heritage and traditions
of the past?
As part of the 2012-2013 Annual Fund Campaign,
we honored Coach Claney Duplechin, Jr.
whose positive influence has impacted the lives of so many individuals during his 34 years of
coaching and teaching at Episcopal High School.
Consider that... • he was named the 2012 Gill National Coach of the Year for Track and Field;
• he was named the 2013 National Coach of the Year Boys Cross Country by the National Federation of State High School Associations;
• his track teams have won 30 District Championships and 4 Runner-ups; 27 Regional Championships and 5 Regional Runner-ups; and 10 State Championships, 9 State Runner-ups, and had 4 third place finishes;
• his athletes have made 334 appearances at the State Track Meet;
• he has coached 63 individual State Champions;
• his Boys Cross Country Teams have won 22 State Championships including 16 in a row, which places them 2nd on the National Federation of High Schools List;
• and even with all of these honors and accomplishments, his focus still remains on developing “good people”. *Statistics as of June 30, 2012
Through the generosity of numerous individuals, we created a first-class cross country trail on campus – The Coach Dupe Trail – which is used daily by students and faculty members. From physical education classes to athletic training, the ¾ mile, timber-lined and mulch surfaced path is not only contributing to our students’ physical well-being, but is also serving as a huge enhancement to the entire athletic program at EHS.
This trail not only will benefit future generations of students but pays tribute to a man who has touched so many lives.

The Father Seger Prayer Path, honoring the Reverend Canon David L. Seger
Sometimes the best ideas begin with a simple, thoughtful conversation. And then it becomes something very special.
Early on in the Annual Fund Campaign, Robin Kilpatrick ’79, suggested we “do something” to honor Father David Seger, former EHS chaplain and religious studies teacher, as part of the campaign.
Father Seger was with Episcopal when the cross country program was launched, and was instrumental in getting the program “up and running.” His teaching and guidance influenced many EHS students who benefitted from his wisdom and guidance during the early years of the school.
It was soon decided that a “Prayer Path” honoring Father Seger would be created as part of The Coach Dupe Trail.
EHS alumni from the classes of 1976 through 1985 were invited to support this project with a charitable contribution. In addition, current EHS board member, Margaret Lawhon Schott suggested inviting the St. Luke’s Episcopal parishioners who had recently gotten to know the Segers during their time back in Baton Rouge to also participate in this effort.
Soon thereafter came the realization that the simple “Prayer Path” idea had developed into something far more than anyone could have imagined. More than 80 donors came forward to honor Father Seger, resulting in a significant contribution to the project. “We are blessed to be able to honor Father Seger in this way for his faithful service to the Episcopal community,” shared Head of School Hugh McIntosh during the dedication ceremony.
The Father Seger Prayer Path offers walkers and runners an opportunity to reflect on each of the bible verses listed along the path, and perhaps, sit and be still on the bench dedicated in his honor. As The Rev. Dr. Bryan Owen stated in his letter to the St. Luke’s Church and School families, “this project honors Canon Seger’s service in a truly unique way – athletic, spiritual and academic – and his commitment to excellence in our community – past, present and future.” We can think of no way more fitting to honor a true man of God and lifelong friend to Episcopal.
“No day passes when I do not think of Episcopal
High School and the many students and families who
have benefitted from and will share in this blessed place,
filled with God’s grace.” –G. Allen Penniman, Jr.

John K.D. Graham, ’01, is a film maker and app developer. He is the creator of the film Home Sweet Home and the app
“Your Pizza Adventure.” One of his favorite quotes is, “Art is the lie that makes us realize the truth,” by Pablo Picasso. “I think
this quote is important. We can learn from fiction just as much as from fact. I love making up stories, but I want there to be a
truth to my stories, something that people can identify with and possibly learn from,” stated Graham.

style through pencil drawings. As a student at LSU, she continued her study of drawing and the human figure and graduated with a Masters in Education. Over the years, her artistic style has transformed into more abstract works and
she enjoys painting with enduring textures and layering techniques. Her artwork is available at Acadian Frame and Art
in Baton Rouge, and you can follow her Facebook page at Emily Monroe Godfrey Fine Art.

Episcopal High School Parents’ Guild
“Enduring, Honorable and Strong” was the theme for our past year as Co-Presidents of Parents’ Guild.
This year was as strong as ever when reflecting on the many events, projects and socials that took place throughout the year. It is truly amazing how many dedicated and talented parent volunteers work to make each and every undertaking successful. Our incredible group of parent volunteers helped with the following: Altar Guild, Appreciation Week, Back to School Faculty Lunch and Faculty Social, Barnes & Noble Book Fair, Cafeteria Servers and Tray Helpers, Raising Cane’s Sales, Care Team, EHS Directory, E-Gear, Graduation Reception, Greenery Sale,
Habitat for Humanity, Karnival Night, Mailings, New Parent Liaisons and Socials, New Student Socials for Pre-K/Kindergarten, 1st - 5th, and Middle School, Online Store, Orientation Day events like the Lemonade Stand, Parent Night Receptions for Lower, Middle and Upper School, Parents of Alumni Newsletter including a luncheon for Mums of Alums, Parking Space Raffle, Pizza Sales, School Supplies, Senior Sensation Luncheon, Store Rebates, Used Uniform Sales and last but not least Website Communications. WOW! Thanks to each and every one who helped put these Parents’ Guild sponsored events together. It is truly you all who make Parents’ Guild strong.Parents’ Guild grade level representatives, division coordinators, and room parents helped to synchronize communication between teachers, administration, and parents. This enabled many activities to take place and fun to be had by all involved. One such event was Teachers’ Terrific Tuesday which takes place once each month during the school year, classroom parties for Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter, and end of the year, as well as hosting parents of students rising to 6th and 9th grades. To every parent who helped, we say “Thank You!” With your help, these many activities are possible.

During our Annual Meeting, the teachers and staff had an opportunity to present projects that would enhance the learning experience or facilities here at Episcopal High School. “The Wish List” as it’s called was voted on by the EHS parent community. Many exciting projects were approved, and we were able to give back over $44,000 to the school! Again, it is thanks to all who purchase items we offer throughout the year such as school supplies thru Louisiana Office Supply Company, Raising Cane’s, Papa John’s Pizza, E-Gear, Knights’ Out, Greenery, EHS Directories, store rebates from Target, Albertson’s, and Office Depot, Barnes and Noble Book Fair, and Sponsorships for Karnival. Parents’ Guild will move into the future with the theme of “Embrace, Honor, Support” for 2013-2014 under the leadership of Kim Walker and Pam Lawson.
May we all embrace the future,
Therese DeMouy and Laura Portwood2012-2013 Parents’ Guild Co-Presidents
Many schools have an association or group of parent volunteers who help foster a sense of community among parents, administration, teachers and staff. At Episcopal, this group is our Parents’ Guild. These volunteers can be seen on the EHS campus every day, providing hundreds of volunteer hours each year to support the students and faculty.
From managing the many fundraisers, volunteering in the library or dining hall, organizing classroom activities, planning socials for new families, returning families and faculty/staff or helping with many other administrative tasks, the Parents’ Guild volunteers work tirelessly to support the EHS mission, and we are grateful.

Karnival Knight
fun
On Friday, March 8, EHS families gathered on the front lawn to celebrate the EHS “Old Time” Karnival complete with amusements, games, entertainment, a cake walk and great food. Under the leadership of EHS current parents Kate Brown and Lisa Guarisco, more than 100 volunteers contributed their time and talents to make the event memorable for the EHS families and their friends.
Students, wearing their brightly colored Karnival Knight t-shirts and shorts, could be seen climbing the rock wall, jumping on a bungee trampoline, racing around on tricycles, maneuvering through an obstacle course, “walking on water” in giant inflatable balls, playing in the “foam pit” and enjoying sports attractions, among many other things. Also included were traditional carnival games such as the fish pond, dunking booth and bean bag toss. Entertainment included student bands and the EHS faculty/staff band, along with a pie eating contest and a surprise visit from Knightreaux, the EHS mascot.
New this year was the opportunity to become a “booth sponsor”. We had a great response to this request and are grateful to the following donors who stepped forward and helped underwrite the event.

Supporting, Encouraging and Advancing the EHS Athletic Program
The 2012-2013 school year was a pivotal one for the EHS Squires Club. The year was highlighted with many firsts at Episcopal which included the following:
• Our membership numbers for 2012-2013 were an all-time high at 240.• We opened our first Squires Store located on campus, selling PE Uniforms and Squires Gear.• Our Knight Spirit was promoted by the new addition to

Episcopal Alumni AssociationDear Fellow Alumni,
I would like to thank you for your outstanding support during the 2012-2013 school year. I am honored and privileged to have served as the EHS Alumni Association President for the past two years, and enjoyed our commitment of maintaining the established partnership with Episcopal and developing services and benefits that meet the needs of our growing alumni community.
This past year provided new venues for the alumni community to stay connected. The EHS Alumni e-newsletter was launched in October of 2012, and is now sent via e-mail on a quarterly basis. This e-newsletter focuses on alumni
news and encourages greater opportunities for networking.
Additional networking and opportunities for gathering at alumni events started with our newest members of the Alumni Association, and the Class of 2012 kicked off the fall semester with a yearbook signing party in August. A new event was added to the alumni calendar in celebration of Coach Claney Duplechin’s award as the 2012 Gill Athletics National Coach of the Year for Boys Track & Field – Coach Dupe Knight – which was held on September 7, 2012. The event was a tremendous success and many former alumni athletes joined in the fun.
The Homecoming tradition continued in October, and alumni enjoyed reconnecting while listening to live music from Hungry Hungry, a young band with EHS students as members. Many volunteers came out for the Annual Fund Alumni Phone-a-Thon, and several alumni volunteers won prizes for participating in this fundraising activity.

The spring semester brought with it a few new events as well, including an alumni social which was held in March for members of the 1980’s decade at the home of Bob and Kellie Kaufman Belk ’87. March also presented an opportunity for Hugh McIntosh, EHS Head of School, to attend an alumni gathering in Atlanta. The Class of 1993 kicked off the reunion season with their 20-year reunion on April 20th, and the second annual crawfish boil was held for graduating seniors in early May. Prior to graduation, a legacy reception was hosted for alumni and their children who were seniors in appreciation for these families who are continuing the legacy of an Episcopal education.
Please look for alumni opportunities which continue to promote the EHS mission.
With regards,
