    TheLeadershipDevelopmentpathwayhasnotbeenfullystandardized,andsomeschoolsutilizethesecategoriesdifferently.Lownumbersorzeroesheredonotnecessarilyindicatethataschoolisnotprovidingrelatedservices;

    EleventhgradestudentKMwasoneofthestudentsselectedtoparticipateintheShadowingDayseriesatTempleUniversity.KMwastheonlyjuniorselectedbecauseheexhibitedamaturityandtenacityunmatchedbyhis

    otherclassmates.AfterattendingclassesandmeetingTemplestudentsintheengineeringdepartment,KMwas

    offeredtheopportunitytojointhedistinguishedNationalSocietyofBlackEngineers(NSBE),highschoolchapter.

    Asaresult,duringthecourseoftheschoolyearheattendsweeklymeetingswherehereceivesmentorship,

    tutoringinadvancedmathandsciences,andopportunitiestoparticipateinregionalsciencecompetitions.KMs

    scienceandmathgradeshavebeenpositivelyaffectedbythisopportunityandheisnowreceivingsupportfrom

    theNSBYmembersinreceivingscholarshipstoattendsomeofthetoptierengineeringschoolsinthecountry.

    DHisan11thgradestudentinJohnBartram'sHealthAcademyandcurrentlyenrolledinthe24weekinternshipprogramthroughPYNandtheStudentSuccessCenterattheLauraSimsSkatehouse.DHhasfacedmanychallengesinhislifetimeandisdeterminedtobecomeaneurosurgeon.Hishardworkanddedicationtohiscareer

    goalshavecaughttheattentionofmanyaroundhim,includingMs.Sims,presidentofLauraSimsSkateHouse

    CommunityFoundation.Ms.SimsinformedhimofanopportunitytoparticipateinaninternshipatJohnHopkins

    University.TheJohnsHopkinsSummerUniversityProgramoffersqualifiedhighschoolstudentstheopportunityto

    takefreshman-andsophomore-levelcreditclassesinartsandsciencesandengineering.DHisexcitedandcannot

    waittobegintheprogramtobeeducatedbyhislifelongidolDr.BenjaminCarson.Heisresearchingandpreparing

    forhissummerinternshipsatJohnHopkinsandevenmoremotivatedtobecomeaphysician.

    OnSeptember29thweheldourfirstCollegePrepWednesdaysAssembly forseniors.KutztownUniversity,ourhigheredpartner,wasthefirstcollegetobefeatured.Therewere274seniorsin

    attendanceatthisassembly.ThePostSecondarySpecialistwentontoorganize10assembliesintotal

    betweenthemonthsofSeptember&January,serving336seniorsatleastonceandhosting12

    colleges/universities,2careerspeakers,1financialaidand1scholarshipWorkshop.

    OnOctober2ndEdisonHighSchoolhostedtheHispanicScholarshipFundandMcDonalds StepsforSuccessWorkshops. Theeventconsistedofworkshopsforbothparentsandstudentsonnavigatingthe

    collegeapplicationprocess.ThebilingualworkshopsincludedtopicssuchasPreparing&Payingfor

    College,WritingEssays,ChoosingaUniversity,andUnderstandingFinancialAid.Theeventwasfreeandopenedtothepublic.Approximately300peopleattendedtheevent,ofwhich106werefamily

    membersofEdisonstudentsand64wereEdisonStudents.

    OnOctober19ththePhiladelphiaChildrensFoundationCareerClub helditsfirstsession.ThroughouttheyearthePCFworkedwithatotaloffourclassesonceamonth;twoEnglishIIandtwoEnglishIII,fortwo4

    monthsessions.TheCareerClubconsistedofvariousprofessionalsfromdifferentcareerfieldsproviding

    studentswithinformationontopicssuchasResumeWriting,PreparingforCollege,InterviewingSkills,and

    Networking.TheyalsoworkedwiththeCareerSpecialisttoorganizeaCareerSpeakersSeriesforagroup

    offreshmanstudents.Approximately200studentswereservicedbyPCF.

    OnNovember30thwemetandexceededourgoaltohave100seniorssubmitcollegeapplicationsbytheendofNovember.Bythatdatewehadassisted178seniorsinapplyingtoatleastonecollegeor

    university;212seniorscompletedandsubmittedatotalof547applicationsthisacademicyear.

    December-January-February

    OnDecember2nd&3rdweassistedintheregistrationprocessforAfter-SchoolClubsandPrograms .Aftersupportingtheprincipalincreatingandinstitutionalizingaprocessbywhichteachersandpartners

    submitproposalsforClubsandAfterSchoolPrograms,wesetforthtorecruitstudents.Studentswere

    givenanopportunitytocompletearegistrationformduringtheirrespectivelunchperiods;142students

    signeduptojoin.

    OnJanuary14thweheldourCollegeintheRealWorldprogram.ApanelofrecentEdisonalumniattendingcollegemetwithseniorswhohadappliedtooneormorecollegesoruniversities.Thepurpose

    oftheeventistogivetheseniorsanopportunitytoaskalumniquestionsabouttheprocess,their

    experienceincollegethusfar,andadviceonwhatwouldtheydodifferently.Therewere75seniorsin

    attendance,and4alumnionthepanel.

    March16,2011wehostedaCollege&CareerAssembly intheEdisonAuditoriumforfreshmen.SpecialguestsincludedPhillyGoes2College,MIMIC,PoliceExplores,andMotivationalSpeakerRickyCalderon,

    whodidanamazingjobengagingthestudentswithhisstoryaboutgrowingupinReading,PAwithstrict

    parents,hisacceptancetoTempleUniv.andhislifealteringexperiencewhenhischildhoodfriend

    attemptedsuicide.Therewere286freshmanstudentsinattendance.

    OnApril13thwehostedCollegePrepCatchUpWednesday AssemblywherethePostSecondarySpecialistannouncedto232seniorstheimportanceofcompletingtheFAFSAapplication,PHEAA

    Deadline,FinancialAidAwardLetters,CollegeDeposits,ResidenceHallApplicationsandDeposits,

    CorePhillyScholarship,andmore.

    OnMay20thPACollegeAdvisoryCorpshelditsAnnualDecisionDay programwiththesupportoftheStudentSuccessCenterstaffandtheIntegratedServiceCoordinator.197seniorswereinattendanceat

    thisevent.

    InthemonthofJunetheStudentSuccessCenterassistedtheTransitionalAssistantPrincipalwiththeSummerBridgeProgram(SBP).AdditionallythePostSecondarySpecialistcreatedtheCollegeReadiness

    CurriculumtobeusedattheSBP;theCareerSpecialistfinalizedtheinternshipapplicationsforprospectiveSBPinterns,interviewedandhiredinterns,aswellascreatingthejobdescriptionand

    expectationsforSBPinterns;andtheManagingCoordinatorpreparedthetrippacketsforalltheSBPtrips,

    theDOLexpenditureandorderformsforthesetrips(whereneeded),andcoordinatedallthelogisticsfor

    eachtripfromtransportation,tomeals,totripitineraries.

    2.Successstories

    RisingseniorJLwasadmittedtotheHarvardUniversitySecondarySchoolProgram.OurCareerSpecialisthelpedJLthroughtheapplicationprocess.SheadvocatedforthePrincipaltouseEdisonfundstocoverthecostof

    theapplicationfeeandthetravelexpenses,whichEdisoncovered.TheCareerSpecialistalsohelpedJLcomplete

    theCharlesEllisapplicationwhichwasapprovedandcoveredthecostofattendingtheprogram,anestimated

    $10,000.WiththeassistanceofthePhiladelphiaEducationFund,theSSCwasabletoprovideJLwiththerequiredcoursebooks.JLisnowinherthirdweekofthesevenweekprogram.

    EdisonseniorJLRwalkedintotheStudentSuccessCenterinmidOctobertoasktheManagingCoordinatorifshewouldserveastheNominatorforhisGatesMillenniumScholarshipapplication.Forthenexttwomonthshe

    workedwithSSCstaffandteacherstofinalizehisessays.SSCstaffprovidedhimwiththesupportand

    encouragementheneededtocompleteandsubmittheapplication.OnApril20thwewerenotifiedthatJLRhad

    beenawardedtheGatesMillenniumScholarship,secondGMSawardedtoanEdisonstudentsincetheSSCproject

    beganin2005.

    DCwasasenioratFitzsimonsandstartedcomingtotheSSCatthebeginningoftheschoolyearlookingforemployment.Hestartedasaninternbutwalkedawaywhenhedidntwanttoabidebytherulesconcerningthe

    schoolsdresscode,cuttingpolicyandtheresponsibilitiesoftheschoolbasedinterns,whohadtoreporttoschool

    at7:00ameveryday.DCcontinuedtostopbythecenterandfinallyaskedwhatheneededtodotogetbackon

    boardwiththeinterns.Heagreedtofollowthedresscode,gotoallofhisclassesandreporttoschoolearly.He

    utilizedCollegeAccessandendedupgoingtoallofthecollegevisitsandrequiredtrainingsfortheinterns.DC

    decidedtobecomeabetterstudentandattendcollege.HewasacceptedtoCCPandDCCCforliberalstudiesand

    carpentry.DCgraduatedandreceivedtheMostImprovedSeniorAward.

    SHwasashyquietstudentwhocontemplatedleavingschoolbecauseofbullying.HewouldusetheSSCduringhislunchperiodasasafezonetoeatandlistentohismusic.S.H.startedgettinginvolvedwiththeinternsandwas

    OnSeptember22,2010,Mr.WilliamWrightorganizedaCollegeFairthatserved121seniorclassstudents.Thestudentswereexcitedabouthaving7stateschoolsparticipateinthecollegefair.Thefairtookplaceinthelibrary.

    Studentswereabletointeractwithvariouscollegeadmissionrepresentativesandapplytoprospectiveuniversities

    forfree.

    OnNovember3,2010,Mr.WilliamWrightorganizedaTradeSchoolFairforstudentsthatwerenotinterestedinattendingcollege.Therewere3TradeSchoolsthatparticipatedintheevent.Studentshadtheopportunitytoask

    questionsandminglewiththeTradeSchoolRepresentatives.Therewere62studentsinattendance.

    Ms.FlemmingspartneredwiththePhiladelphiaChildrensFoundationtoorganizeaseriesofworkshopsandpresentationsthroughouttheschoolyear.OnNovember18,2010,Ms.FlemmingsconductedaGunViolence

    Workshopandinvitedaguestspeaker.FrankfordHighSchoolislistedasapredominatelydangerousschool

    accordingtotheSchoolDistrictofPhiladelphia.ThisworkshopwaseffectivebecauseitbroughtawarenesstotheissuesofgunviolencethatoccurfrequentlyintheFrankfordneighborhood.Theworkshopswereheldinvarious

    classroomsand46studentswereserviced.

    OnDecember17,2010,Ms.FlemmingsorganizedaYoungProfessionalsCareerDay.Therewereover50professionalsfromvariouscareerfieldsthatparticipatedintheevent.Alloftheprofessionalswereundertheage

    of35.Studentswereabletoidentifywiththeirstoryandlearnfromtheirjourneytosuccess.Theeventtookplace

    inthelibraryandinvariousclassrooms.Therewere484studentswhoparticipatedandbenefitedfromthisevent.

    TherewereseveraltripsMr.WilliamWrightplannedandcoordinated.ThestudentswereabletoattendShippensburgUniversityonDecember6,BloomsburgUniversityonJanuary25andMillersvilleUniversityon

    February23.Allofthestudentswereabletotakeatouroftheprospectivecollegecampusandinteractwith

    currentcollegestudents.Over50unduplicatedstudentswereserved(withalltripscombined).

    Thisyear,ShadowingDaywasahugesuccess.Ms.CharlotteFlemmingsdidanamazingjobofcoordinatingstudentswithjobsites.Therewere49studentswhoparticipatedinShadowingDay.Allofthestudentswereable

    toshadowvariousprofessionalsandenjoyafullworkday.

    OnApril14,2011,Mr.WilliamWrightorganizedaFAFSACompletionDayforallseniorclassstudents.Mr.WrightinvitedeveryEnglishclasstotheStudentSuccessCenter.StudentscompletedaSeniorSurveyandwereableto

    receiveinformationabouthowtocompletetheFAFSAform.Therewere106studentswhoparticipatedinthis

    event. OnMay10,2011theStudentSuccessCenterhelditsannualDecisionDay.Therewere50studentswhowere

    celebratedfortheirdecisiontoattendcollege.Theeventwasheldinthelibrary.Thestudentsenjoyedacatered

    lunch,keynotespeakerandawardceremony.

    OnMay20,2011,Ms.CharlotteFlemmingsorganizedanincredibleCareerDay.Therewere55professionalsfromvariouscareerfieldsservingasguestspeakers.Theeventwasheldinthelibraryandinvariousclassrooms.

    Thefaculty,staffandstudentssaidiwasthebestCareerDayFrankfordhaseverseen.Therewere364studentsin

    attendance.

    2.Successstories

    ThereareplentyofsuccessstoriestosharebutIwouldliketobeginbysharingastoryaboutBC,aseniorclassstudentatFrankfordHighSchool.Hewasinvolvedinsportsanddidwellinclass.BCdidnothavethebestgroupof

    friends.Hemadesomebaddecisionsandwasinsometrouble.BCdecidedtoconfideinseveralstaffmembers

    withintheStudentSuccessCenterforadvice.BCworkedwiththePost-SecondaryCoordinatorandtheSocial

    Workertogetbackontherighttrack.TherewasnoquestionthatBCwouldattendcollege.BCwasacceptedinto

    St.PaulsCollegeandCheyneyUniversity.BCwasnotabletoaffordhisseniordues,sotheSSCandCommunitiesIn

    SchoolsofPhiladelphiapaidforhisseniorduessothathewouldbeabletowalkdowntheaislewithhiscapand

    gown.BCwasextremelygrateful.Thereisnoquestionthathewillbesuccessful.

    QSisajunioratFrankfordHighSchool.QSisabright,loving,intelligentyoungwoman.ShewasintroducedtotheStudentSuccessCenterbytheStudentAdvisorMr.Griffith.Shewasrecommendedbyvariousfacultymembersto

    participateintheSSCLAprogram.ShedidanexcellentjobduringherinterviewfortheSSCLAprogram.Shebecame

    apartoftheSSCfamily.QSappliedtovariouscompetitivesummerinternshipsinthecity.Sheworkedwiththe

    CareerDevelopmentCoordinatortoprepareforherupcominginterviews.WeareproudtoannouncethatQSwas

    consideredforeveryinternshipsheinterviewedfor.Shedecidedtoaccepttwointernships.Shecontinuouslystops

    bytheStudentSuccessCentereveninthesummer.QShasalreadybegunplanningforhersenioryearand

    SSCSocialWorkercollaboratedwiththecounselingteamandassistantprincipaltofileaDHSreport.Whilethe

    studentswereinitiallyconcernedabouttheconsequencesofthereportanduncertainabouttheirconfidencein

    theSSCstaff'sactions,theysoonreceivedanumberofservicesthatimprovedtheirhomelifeandacademic

    performance.ServicesobtainedviatheSSCinclude:FoodsupportthroughDHSandtheschoolThanksgivingDay

    concernedabouttheDHSreportandhadreservationsaboutSSCstaff,metwiththeSSCManageronthelastday

    ofschooltotalkabouttheclosingoftheprogram.Thestudentsaid,Iwouldneverhaveearnedgoodgrades

    withouttheSSC.IdonotknowwhatIwouldhavedone.Idonotunderstandwhytheywouldclosethisplace,and

    IcannotbelievethatonthelastdayofschoolIcanfindacomputertousebecauseithasalwaysbeenpackedwith

    studentswereveryenthusiasticaboutthevisitandwehopethatthiswillhelpustobuildaconnectionbetween

    thetwoprogramsintheupcomingschoolyear.

    OneonOneCounselingforSeniors:SincetheSSCwasclosedduringsuchacriticaltimeoftheyear,alargeportionofourworkconsistedofmeetingone-on-onewithasmanyseniorsaspossible,aswellaspartneringcloselywith

    oneoftheseniorcounselors,toensurethateveryseniorhadtheopportunitytoapplytoapostsecondary

    institution.Throughtheseefforts,theSSCstaffwasabletomeetindividuallywith50%oftheseniorclass.We

    2.Successstories

    WhenthePostSecondaryCoordinator(PSC)metLKinthespringofhersenioryear,LKhadjustgivenbirthtoherfirstchildandhadnoplansbeyondgraduationotherthanworkingasababysitterforherneighbor.ThePSCmet

    withherandherfamilytohelpherapplytocolleges,scholarships,andfinancialaid.WiththePSCshelp,LKwasabletoconvincehermotherthatshecouldandshouldgotocollege.ThePSCworkedwithLK,hermother,andthe

    Principalthroughoutthefinalmarkingperiodtoensurethatshemanageattendanceissuesrelatedtoherchild,

    finishherseniorprojectandgraduateontime.Asaresult,LKwillbeattendingCCPinthefall(withnostudent

    loans).ThankstotheCareerCoordinator(CC),LKisalsocurrentlyenrolledinthesummerWorkReadyprogram

    andsheplanstousethemoneyfromtheprogramforherbooksinthefall.LKalsoworkedwiththeCCtowriteher

    resumeandcontactCCPinhopesofsecuringanon-campusjob.

    BecausetheCareerCoordinatorbeganworkingattheSSCinApril,oneofhismainfocusesthisspringwasrecruitingstudentsforthesummerWorkReadyprogram.Thisaffordedhimtheopportunitytoworkwithmany

    students,helpingthemrealizetheimportanceofpersistenceandfollow-through.Thiswasameaningfulprocess

    formanystudentsbutithashadaverysignificantimpactontwostudentsinparticular,bothofwhomare

    currentlyworkingasSummerBridgeinternsattheschool.IPandTSworkedcloselywiththeCCthroughoutthe

    applicationprocessbutwereultimatelynotplacedinsummerinternships.Whilesomestaffwithinthebuilding

    hadconcernsaboutthesetwostudents,theCCadvocatedforthemtoworkasSummerBridgeinterns.

    Throughouttherecruitmentprocessaswellasinthesummer,theCChasworkedwithbothofthesestudentson

    importanthabitsandresponsibilitiessuchasattendance,punctuality,andhowtoappropriatelyaddressauthority

    figures.Underhissupervision,bothIPandTShaveblossomedintohardworkingyoungmen;multipleteachersand

    administratorshavenoticedthechange.TheyhavealsotakenadvantageoftheopportunitytoworkwiththePSC

    tobeginplanningtheirpostsecondarypaths,amovemotivatedbytheCCsencouragementthattheycanachieve

    betterthingsiftheyworkhardforthem.

    wasthecaseinthepreviousyear,SocialWorkConnection(SWC)providedschoolsocialworkservicesasacomponentof

    theStudentSuccessCenter(SSC)initiativeinallofthe11schoolsinvolved.Lastyearwasthefirsttimewefunctionedasa

    partoftheDepartmentofLabor(DOL)grant.TheinitialsetupwentverysmoothlywithalloftheCentersfullyoperational;

    experiencedstaffandnecessaryequipmentwereinplace.Therewererelativelyfewchanges,asidefromseveralnewly

    assignedTAPprincipalsorAssistantPrincipalcontactpersonsandanewsocialworkeratGermantownHighSchool.

    ThetargetstudentpopulationvariedsomewhatfromschooltoschooldependingontheidentifiedDOLpopulationor

    identifiedneed.Howeverformostschoolstherewasafairlyconsistentidentificationofthehighestriskpopulationsfor

    service,namely,studentsreturningfromincarcerationand/orplacement,overage/under-creditedstudentsorOASIS,9th

    graders,studentsidentifiedasat-riskviaEarlyWarningIndicators,etc.Thesestudentshavemanyfamilyandschool-related

    issues(includingpoorattendance,cutting,seriousbehaviorproblems,failure/pooracademicskills,rosterandpost-

    secondaryissues,conflictswithteachers,etc);familyissues(seriousillnessordeathofalovedone,parentseparationand

    familyconflictissues,runaways,homelessness,teenpregnancy,teenparentinganddaycare);lackofmedicalanddental

    care,etc;suspectedneglectand/orabusewhetherphysical,emotionalorsexualinvolvingDHSmandatedreporting);griefandloss(includingviolentdeathorincarcerationoffamilymemberorfriend);peerrelationshipsandpeerconflict,

    bullying;sexual/physicalaggression;socialadjustmentandneededsocialandcopingskills;mentalhealthissuesincluding

    seriousdepression,acuteanxiety,suicidalideationand/orgestures,self-injuryandmutilation(suchas,cutting),psychiatric

    Overthecourseofthe2010-2011academicyear,approximately2000studentswereservedand42groupswerefacilitated

    resultinginmorethan15000contactswithstudentsintheelevenSSCschools.Thecurrentnumberofongoingclientsis571.

    Theprincipalservicemodalitiesoverallindividualandgroupcounseling,followedbylifeandsocialskillsdevelopment,

    consultationswithstaff,casemanagement,familyconsults,informationandreferrals,socialworkmediation,crisis

    interventionandpeermediation.

    Additionalsocialworkservicesofferedtoallschoolsincluded:relevanttheme-orientedwork-shops,participationinCSAP

    andSSCteammeetings,outreachtofamilies,andongoingsupportforSSCprogramsincludingparticipationinSSCteam

    projects.Supportgroupsandworkshopswereorganizedinresponsetoavarietyofstudentneedswhichincluded

    attendance,socialskills,e.g.communication(bothoralandwritten)andangermanagement,bookclubs,gay/straight
