Three choices | Help Listen / Read the news story and choose the correct answer from each choice. HINT – Look at the words around the gap to discover what type of word is missing!

408 Does the Tazzy Tiger Still Roam? 1 Benjamin was the 1: first/last/unique of his kind. He died on September 7th, 1936, at

Hobart Zoo in Tasmania, the large island off the southern coast of the Australian mainland. But what was Benjamin? He was a Thylacine, a carnivorous marsupial better known as a Tasmanian 2: Devil/Wolf/Tiger. But although Benjamin died more than 30, 500 days ago, is he really the last Tasmanian Tiger? Or do they still exist, roaming hidden in the forests of Australia’s smallest state?

2 According to one Tasmanian, the tiger is very much alive. Neil Waters claims that he saw a Tasmanian Tiger walking near to his 3: urban/isolated/sprawling home in the wilderness of the north-eastern part of the island. Speaking to The London Times Mr Waters said, “It came running past the window, travelling along and took off down the track”. That was in 2014, and since then Mr. Waters, a former horticulturalist, has dedicated his life to proving that the large, sandy-coloured, 4: wolf/bear/panther-like creature with distinctive stripes is not extinct.

3 Mr Waters is not alone in his belief that the ‘Tazzy Tiger’ still roams around the island. His Thylacine Awareness Group has about 8,000 members, all of whom 5: passionately/crazily/amazingly believe that the animal still lives. They claim that beheaded kangaroos and devoured wombat remains are even more proof of the animal’s continued existence in Tasmania.

4 Mr Waters is not the only Tasmanian to have seen a Tazzy Tiger, as an official report by the Tasmanian Government revealed last year. Farmers, bushwalkers, locals and tourists all claimed to have seen the animal between 6: 1816/1916/2016 and 2019. Yet, crucially, the one bit of evidence that would surely prove beyond any doubt still eludes everyone – a 7: film/photograph/body.

5 However, it is not impossible that the Tasmanian Tiger still exists. Other species who were believed to have died out have been found still very much alive. The Night Parrot was rediscovered in 2013 after 8: 100/10/1 years and the Leadbeater’s Possum which was declared extinct in 1909 was found again in 1962. So, there is still hope that the tiger can be found, more so after Screen 9: Hobart/Tasmania/Australia donated funds to produce a film on the search for thylacine.

6 The demise of Benjamin has had at least one positive outcome, September 7th – the day he died – is now Threatened Species Day in Australia. Although, there are still many people, who believe that his descendants out there. 10: Somewhere/Somehow/Something…
