408 Home Marathons to Combat COVID-19 1 As the world battles the devasting effects of the COVID-19 virus, people in

Some have begun cooking courses, others have joined virtual online parties, whilst a few even may have tried to 2: __________ their language skills! But for some cooped up in houses and flats from England to Australia and from Abu Dhabi to Santiago, they needed something more 3: ___________. To run a marathon. Without leaving their homes.

2 Nobody knows who exactly was the first to run a ‘home-marathon’, but one of the earliest candidates was Elisha Nochomovitz from the city of Balma near Toulouse in the 4: ___________ of France. Mr Nochomovitz got the idea to run a marathon on his 7-metre balcony after the Barcelona Marathon he had been preparing to take part in was 5: ___________ until October.

3 Before trying to start the balcony marathon, Mr Nochomovitz said that he had lots of self-doubt. But he felt that his run could pay tribute to the “real heroes of our planet – the medical professionals who give up their lives to 6: ___________ people”. When he told his 7: ___________ of his plan, she responded by saying “Do what you want, but just clean up the balcony first!”

4 It took Mr Nochomovitz 6 hrs 48 mins to complete the 42.2km marathon on his balcony. To help him with his running he listened to music by artists such as Sia, Deadmau5 and Hans Zimmer. He was also thankful that his neighbours didn’t complain at the noise of him running back and forth 6,029 times on his balcony!

Whilst, one Sydney dentist, Mark Bennet, spent 5 hrs 32 mins running 5,200 laps of his brother’s balcony. As well as completing the 26.2 miles, Mr Bennet also raised money for 10: ___________ healthcare workers. Even more impressive was Jai Arumugam, who overcame the obstacle of having no balcony or garden by running 1,512 loops of his 11: ____________ in Dubai’s Discovery Gardens – his third marathon of 2020!
