Welcome to the Anderson School of Management’s 2020 Hall of Fame! Thank you for attending and for your ongoing support of the school. We have a number of outstanding alumni to honor this evening.

The accomplishments of honorees John T. Chavez, Alicia Gutierrez, Stephen Harper, and David Jessen are truly remarkable. We honor our young alumni winners Nyika Allen and Darrell Garcia and we recognize Faculty Community Leadership Award winner Ann Brooks, who has done so much for Anderson.

In addition to the outstanding honorees, we are working hard to bring the future into focus at Anderson. We continue to place emphasis on experiential opportunities. In the last year our students took First Place

in the graduate Daniels Fund Ethics Case Competition and won First Place in the Acura ILX Marketing Challenge. We are also undergoing a search for the next Dean at Anderson who will be instrumental in leading the school into the future. With students, like those that are supported through Hall of Fame student scholarships, internationally recognized faculty, and new leadership, the future at Anderson is incredibly bright.

Beyond the experiential opportunities offered, the Anderson School continues to prepare students for the challenges of both today and tomorrow. We are doing so through constantly reviewing and updating our existing curriculum across the core business disciplines. We are also exploring new approaches with key strategic partners in entrepreneurship, information assurance, and program management.

An emerging area of emphasis is our international programs. We continue to develop our partnerships with Chinese schools and have our first cohort of Chinese students studying for a full year at Anderson this year. Additionally, through the leadership of Dr. Dimitri Kapelianis (2019 Faculty Community Leadership honoree), Anderson is opening a new Sales Center, which will prepare our students in professional selling.

The proceeds of this evening go to support scholarships for Anderson students. Whether building the foundation for a career, business, or facility, having the financial resources is a necessary component of a successful outcome. Your support through your attendance and contributions provides a very tangible means to enable our students to build their futures.

I thank you for your generosity.

Enjoy the Hall of Fame!

Welcome from the Dean

Anderson Foundation Board Members

How the Honorees are Selected

*Hall of Fame Selection Committee

There is an extensive process in selecting our Hall of Fame honorees. First, the Anderson Foundation Board calls for

nominations from our alumni, donors, and business community friends in three categories: Hall of Fame, Young Alumni,

and Faculty Community Leadership.

The nominees are judged by a panel of past Hall of Fame inductees and Anderson Foundation Board Advancement

Committee Members on three criteria: 1) Professional Success, 2) Contribution to the Community, and 3) Involvement/

Support for Continuing Education.

The Anderson Foundation Board is a nonpartisan 501(c)3 organization and restricts nominees that hold elected or

appointed office at federal or state levels. In addition, currently serving Foundation Board members are ineligible for the

award.

Desiring an international academic degree and overseas experience, Kehinde Ogunade moved from Nigeria to Albuquerque in August of 2017 to begin his Master’s degree in Accounting and completed it in July 2019 with a cumulative GPA of 3.99. He is currently working toward a second Master’s degree in Information Systems and Assurance with a GPA of 3.91.

Kehinde’s five-year plan is to complete a Ph.D. in Accounting before returning to Nigeria to become a professor. “I love to impact the lives of others through knowledge and add value to my home country’s education system,” says Kehinde.

Kehinde is a 2020 Hall of Fame scholarship recipient. This financial assistance has afforded him the opportunity to exclusively focus on his studies and has allowed him to stay on track with his coursework. He is a wonderful example of what scholarships can do for UNM Anderson students.

Hall of Fame HonoreeJOHN T. CHAVEZ John T. Chavez is the Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer for a group of affiliated companies in Albuquerque including Sandia Peak Ski Company, Sandia Peak Tram Company, Alvarado Realty Company, Santa Fe Ski Company and Sandia Peak Utility Company, where he has worked for 30 years. He earned his BBA from the Anderson School of Management with an emphasis in accounting in 1984.

John’s business values stem from the belief that if you treat people fairly, they will do the same. “My philosophy is to try to do as much good as I can, whether it be good work or good works and to be a positive influence in people’s lives.”

John grew up in Gallup, New Mexico among a large family of six sisters and one brother. Upon graduation from high school, John was awarded five scholarships to attend the Anderson School. “My teachers, fathers of friends, football coach – all knew my situation. I was 11 and 12 when my parents passed. They instilled strong religious values and a sense of responsibility. The good people of Gallup believed in me which was the bridge for me getting an education. The support I received enabled generations of my family to achieve college degrees.”

While completing his business degree at Anderson, John served as President of the Association of Accounting Students. Later, he served on

the Board of Trustees for the CFO Academy at Anderson, as Treasurer of the Anderson Foundation and completed an eight-year term as Board Member and Finance Chair for the CNM Foundation. John is also on the Accountancy Advisory Board at CNM. He is a charter member and organizer of the Si Se Puede Learning Center Resource Council, an after-school program for elementary school children in Albuquerque.

John feels lucky to be involved with many community service initiatives. He has served as Chair of the New Mexico Society of CPA’s (NMSCPA) and in 1998 was named Outstanding Member in Corporate Practice by the NMSCPA. He has contributed significantly to securing the New Mexico Limited Liability Act, the New Mexico Accountancy Act, and the New Mexico Public Utilities Act. John has also served on the Board of Directors for the national Cesar Chavez Foundation, the Association of Commerce and Industry where he also chaired the Government Accountability Committee, the Anderson Abruzzo International Balloon Museum Foundation, and the New Mexico Water Utility Association.

Education is a Chavez Family Value: Generations of John’s family have attended UNM, including his wife, Mary T. Torres, an Albuquerque attorney and UNM School of Law alumna. His two children and a stepdaughter are all UNM graduates, two from the Anderson School. He is proud that his great nephew is in his senior year at Anderson.

What you may be surprised to know: John is very shy.

How I decompress: “My wife Mary is my best friend and I decompress by spending time talking with her. We love to spend time with our four grandchildren. We love to see the world through their eyes.”

Hall of Fame HonoreeALICIA GUTIERREZ

Alicia Gutierrez earned a BBA with a concentration in Finance at the Anderson School of Management in 1981 and Juris Doctor from the UNM School of Law in 1986. She holds the distinction of being a Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent Attorney. Alicia is a Partner at Moses, Dunn, Farmer and Tuthill P.C. where she has been in private practice since 1988. She is the first female to hold the office of President in the firm’s 65-year history.

Alicia’s ties to UNM began with her father who was among the first class to graduate from the UNM Law School in 1950, just after World War II. “My father was my mentor. He instilled in me a strong work ethic, love of family, traveling, and having fun,” Alicia recalls. “His advice was to work hard and take time to connect with family, no matter how busy you are.” Some of Alicia’s favorite memories as a child revolve around spending time with her 43 first cousins on her father’s side of the family in Los Lunas. “Because of my father, I was able to travel and see the world.”

A native of Albuquerque, Alicia descends from generations of native New Mexicans, going back to her great-grandfather. She has a deep love for the people, food, and the high desert vistas where she enjoys letting her mind wander.

Recalling memories of her time at the Anderson School, participation in an upper level seminar with Robert Chatfield inspired her to think outside the box – to be curious. “Anderson was the foundation that gave me confidence to work as an attorney with businesses, banks, and start-ups, thanks to my concentration in finance.” Alicia’s practice is focused on employment law, banking litigation, and transactional and litigation matters involving real estate. She is motivated by helping clients to make their business better.

Alicia is most proud of serving the community through her Board of Directors roles in both the Education and City sectors. Passionate about education for all, she served on the boards of A Child’s Garden, Manzano Day School, and Bosque School, where she has played an instrumental role in establishing endowments to provide scholarships. She also served on the Airport Advisory Board for the City of Albuquerque when the Sunport was being built, the City of Albuquerque Personnel Board, the Zia Trust Company, Plaza National Bank, and served as Chairperson of the Business Section of the State Bar of New Mexico.

Guiding Business Philosophy: “Communication is the most important thing in a business endeavor. Be a good communicator. Communicate clearly and understandably.”

Best Advice: The best advice Alicia says she ever received was from Donald Moses, founding partner of the Moses Law Firm. He advised her early on to be a good listener and would often say, “if you are talking, you are not learning.”

Favorite Activity:Alicia and her husband, Dennis, are avid Lobo fans having held season tickets to both football and basketball since they both graduated from UNM 30+ years ago.

Hall of Fame HonoreeSTEPHEN HARPER Dr. Stephen Harper is a best-selling author, award-winning professor, entrepreneur, consultant, angel investor, president of four enterprises, and board member for numerous organizations. He has written eight books on leadership and entrepreneurship including: The Ever-Evolving Enterprise, Extraordinary Entrepreneurship as well as Here’s to the Crazy Entrepreneurs. He earned a BBA at the UNM Anderson School of Management in 1970, an MBA

from The University of Arizona in 1971 and a Ph.D. in Management from Arizona State University in 1975.

As an undergraduate student at Anderson, Dr. Harper remembers the positive impact of a conversation with an advisor. “They encouraged me to consider a completely different alternative to the business path by advising me to take a better look at myself in relationship to my capabilities and concerns,” he recalls. As a result, he chose the path of academia as a profession. Dr. Harper also credits his professional journey to the influence of a class titled Man, Society, and the Law, taught by Professor Tilly. “He was such a profound professor. As an undergraduate student, Professor Tilly’s bootcamp mentality showed me I could do graduate work well beyond the Anderson School.”

Dr. Harper went on to serve on the faculty at Arizona State University, as a Visiting Professor for Duke University’s Executive MBA program, and

as Professor Emeritus of Management and formerly the Duke Energy/Betty Cameron Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship at University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW).

His love for teaching began to flourish at a small regional university in Wilmington, North Carolina. “The smartest decision I made professionally was having the guts to go from one of the largest business schools in the country to one of the smallest at the time. Everyone thought I was committing professional suicide, but I realized that my commitment to teaching and my priorities matched those of UNCW, so I had the courage to move forward.” He retired in 2017 after 40 years of teaching students the finer points of business and entrepreneurship.

In retirement, Dr. Harper enjoys an advising and mentorship role at Tech Mountain, a business accelerator based in Wilmington. He remains available to former students and other people in the business community who seek his counsel. He currently lives on the coast of North Carolina with Marshall, his wife of forty-nine years.

Guiding Philosophy: “If you have a long-term orientation, have objectives for what you plan to achieve, then find a path to get you there, you can almost always succeed. You can make things happen.”

It May Surprise People to Know: “Although I’ve made many presentations and taught for over 40 years, away from the classroom, I’m a fairly reserved person. I like spending time thinking about things, reading,

and with family, so I’m not as out-going and quite as confident as most people believe I might be.”

Hobbies: Dr. Harper enjoys snow skiing, water skiing, and sailing.

Hall of Fame HonoreeDAVID JESSEN

David Jessen is a retired partner from the international accounting firm Ernst & Young (E&Y). David began his career in 1971 as an intern with a local CPA firm in Albuquerque while he was completing his BBA degree in accounting at the UNM Anderson School of Management. He joined Alford Meroney & Company in 1975. In 1980, the firm merged its practice with Arthur Young & Company, naming David as a manager and the office director of tax for both Santa Fe and Albuquerque. David was promoted to principal and named full partner in 1984. In 1987, David accepted the challenge to open the firm’s first East coast office in Raleigh, North Carolina.

“I enjoy a challenge because it makes you do your best. Admittedly, my wife and I were anxious about taking a risk to leave family and friends and move with our two young daughters 2500 miles away to a city we had never been, to open an office where we had no connections. It was one of the best decisions we ever made. Getting out of my comfort zone and accepting the challenge that laid ahead of me in North Carolina proved to be the smartest thing I’ve done professionally.” Arthur Young & Company later merged with Ernst & Whinney, eventually becoming Ernst & Young.

Throughout his 35-year career as a CPA with Ernst & Young, David saw the firm grow from 25 people in Albuquerque to the second largest firm in the world. During his tenure, he held leadership positions including Office Managing Partner, Director of Tax, and Director of Entrepreneurial Services for the Southwest Region. David retired from E&Y in 2008. Three months later, David joined the faculty in the Department of Accountancy and Business Law at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, Cameron School of Business, where he served as Executive-in-Residence, teaching both graduate and undergraduate classes for eleven years, retiring from his second career in 2019.

“Looking back, my career and life started at Anderson. I never intended to go into accounting, but after taking my first class, the Principles of Accounting with professor Dr. Karl Christman, I knew it was for me. He told us this was the most difficult class in the business school and had the highest failure rate of any class. I took that as a challenge. Accounting made sense and I enjoyed it – so began my career. My life began at UNM when I met my wife, Melissa. We were married in 1975 at the UNM Alumni Chapel. After almost 45 years of marriage, she remains my best friend.”

ANDERSON SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT | 2020 HALL OF FAME

Giving Back to the Community: David cares deeply for the community where he lives, particularly in the areas of indigent healthcare, education and cultural arts, noting that “because we’ve been successful in the community, we have an obligation to give back to the community.” David has established endowments both at UNM Anderson and UNCW to support educational opportunities and has served on numerous Boards advocating for underserved populations.

Guiding Philosophy: “My guiding philosophy both personally and in business is the same: good is never good enough – always give 100%; have fun in whatever you do; be respectful.”

Young Alumni HonoreeNYIKA ALLEN Nyika Allen is the Director of Aviation for the City of Albuquerque where she holds the distinction of being the first millennial to lead a city department and the first woman to serve as Director of the Department of Aviation. Nyika is responsible for management oversight of the Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) and Double Eagle II General Aviation Reliever Airport. Under Nyika’s leadership, ABQ expanded its route portfolio in three states and completed

a $30 million-dollar terminal renovation. The airport was recognized by JD Power in both 2018 and 2019 as a top 10 medium hub airport and was most recently recognized by Art Desk Magazine as having a top 9 airport art program in the world.

Nyika graduated from the Anderson School in 2013 with a BBA in International Management. She attributes many experiences at Anderson to her career success. “The moment I realized I wanted to be a business major was when I took Accounting 101. It just clicked. Still, I struggled to figure out what my focus would be. I knew I loved to travel so I joined the UNM Honors Program for a Spanish language trip to Nicaragua. At that point I knew I wanted to fit travel into my future career life.” Many other experiences at Anderson influenced Nyika, including participation in the UNM Entrepreneurial Challenge which exposed her to many people across the community while educating students how to grow a business.

“One of my greatest mentors was Stacy Sacco. His passion for sales and networking helped me become who I am today. He pushed me to get out and around the community doing presentations on millennial leadership. I can attribute most of my career growth to networking. It allowed me to showcase who I am and what I care about,” Nyika recalls.

Nyika is passionate about aviation, technology, entrepreneurship, women’s issues, and the economic health of New Mexico and is motivated by playing a key role in connecting New Mexico to the world.

Since completing her degree, Nyika has been honored as the Albuquerque Business First 2016 Women of Influence Honoree and the Most Influential 40 Under 40 for the Class of 2016 and has served on numerous boards and advisory councils.

People Who Deeply Influenced Me: “My mom and great-grandmother always say, ‘from talking comes talking,’ which takes me back to what I learned from Stacy Sacco about the importance of networking.”

Exploring the World: “I loved playing with snails as a child. I love animals and to explore and look at the world. Exploring the backyard and exploring the world are not really that different. You just need to have the energy and enthusiasm to go do

it. So far, I’ve been to 20 countries and discovered that no country is the same. It has given me a worldly and humanistic perspective on everything.”

Young Alumni HonoreeDARRELL GARCIA

Darrell Garcia is passionate about making an impact in public education, currently serving as the Department Chair and Instructor at Hayes Middle School with the Albuquerque Public School system. Over the last 15 years, Darrell has had the unique privilege of working across all levels of public education. As a founding instructor at Cottonwood Classical Preparatory School, Darrell served in both teaching and administrative roles where he established many extra-curricular programs as well as the school’s NMAA sanctioned athletics and activities program.

“There is no better place to have an impact than in the classroom. Working with a student to help them understand something they didn’t know before is one of the most rewarding feelings you’ll ever experience,” Darrell noted.

Darrell’s journey in education began after completing an undergraduate degree in marketing at Colorado State University. “I worked in retail management and spent time in the business world realizing that was not for me.” He returned to New Mexico where he graduated from the College of Education at UNM and later completed an MBA in Policy and Planning with an emphasis in Strategic Management and Leadership from the Anderson School of Management.

“The most rewarding and hardest class at Anderson was Competitive Analysis with Dr. Patterson. I loved it because it got me to think about systems – how systems come together, how to challenge ourselves to analyze what we believe, what we know, and what we don’t know – then to construct a new framework for our understanding,” Darrell recalls. This foundation continues to influence Darrell’s work to integrate business into the education arena. “I believe an education in business compliments so many professions out there and public education can learn a lot from business.”

Prior to returning to teaching, Darrell worked with the alumni relations team at the UNM Anderson School of Management to help increase fundraising efforts for scholarships and develop the school’s first alumni-focused giving campaign to aid in naming the Anderson Alumni Center for Student Services in the new McKinnon Center for Management building. In his personal life, Darrell and his wife Alicia are avid athletes. He is currently working towards obtaining his Les Mills certification in RPM and can often be found at the gym or on the soccer field.

Something That May Surprise You to Know: “I am somewhat of a musician. I took piano lessons as a child and I dabble with guitar.”

People Who Deeply Influenced Me: “My parents have been my biggest mentors throughout my entire life. From them, I learned how to be a good human being, to display compassion, and to hold myself accountable. Another mentor is Matthew Schenck who taught me how to be a leader and how to move an idea forward in spaces where it may be challenging.”

Faculty Community Leadership AwardANN BROOKSAnn Brooks earned her Bachelor’s (1994) and Master’s (2000) Degrees in Accounting from the University of New Mexico. She has been an Accounting Principal Lecturer at the UNM Anderson School of Management since 2002 and taught as a part-time instructor at CNM for twenty years. During her tenure at the Anderson School, Ann has served as the Director of Online Programs, Chair of Anderson Scholarship Committee, Assessment Co-Coordinator, Accounting Accreditation Director, Beta Alpha Psi Faculty Advisor, 4-year Chair of NM Business Articulation, and Founding Members of UNM’s Online Course Advisory Council.

Ann’s favorite memory of the Anderson School is her involvement with Beta Alpha Psi (BAP), an honor society whose purpose is to encourage and give recognition to scholastic and professional excellence in the fields of accounting, finance, and management information systems. Ann was one of the founding charter members of Anderson’s chapter where she helped start the Accounting Tutoring Lab.

The best professional advice Ann received was when she was 19 years old working as a clerk while going to school part-time. “I had a supervisor, Pete Ingrassia, who told me, ‘the only limitations you have are the ones you put on yourself.’ This had a significant impact on me, because I had been raised in a traditional Italian family who thought that education for women was wasteful. I had low self-esteem as well as mental barriers as to my possibilities. Pete had a totally different attitude about women and

his confidence and emotional support provided me the confidence to follow my heart and obtain an education.”

Ann has a special place in her heart for all of her students, especially those who struggle with confidence issues and mental barriers. She maintains an open-door policy inviting students to approach her outside of class. “One third of my job is empowering students to open their hearts and minds to what is possible, to help them feel valued. Students who struggle with life circumstances outside the classroom need advocates and some just need someone who cares.” Ann is motivated by making a difference in the lives of the people she encounters.

In addition to her gifts of teaching and expertise in accounting, Ann is a musician who enjoys writing, playing and singing. She and her wife, Dawn, along with their three Chihuahuas, plan to relocate to Wake Forest, N.C. in July.

Guiding Philosophy: I strive to behave ethically, act with integrity and treat others with respect. Treat people as you want to be treated in all you do, and things will work out in the right way.

What do you love about New Mexico? I love the diversity and creativity of the people who live in New Mexico and how the spirit of NM is connected to the earth and sky.

What might someone be surprised to know about you? I am a major Marvel and DC movie fan! I see each movie several times with my wife and grandsons!
