Please consider the impact on
the increase of HIV/AIDS as a
result of this project. Contractors
should also be included in HIV
programmes as well as the influx

We have an HIV/AIDs policy that
includes both the mine workers
and contractors. This also spills
over into the community. There
will also be a need for a medical
facility at the construction site so
that there is no additional pressure

This project should benefit the

This mine will benefit the

economic growth. Development
includes things like for example

The local people should be

opportunities.
Women should also be
considered for employment.
We can be trained if we can

Zinc close down, they could be re-

instead of retrenching people,
there will first be an opportunity for
re-employing them at Gergarub

outsiders are sourced. But this has
not yet been finalised.
The socio-economic study will

Consider the shortage of skills.
The recruitment strategy that we

Potential also exists for Skorpion

The Obib Substation that was built

years of the Skorpion Zinc

was 96 MW. Over the years many

was chosen.
We will have to answer these
questions in our report. We are
looking at for example cladding
the dam with rocks, keeping it wet
and are also considering the wind
direction.

Will there be an increase in the
level of dust already
experienced by the
communities?
One has to manage the dust
problem. We are doing studies to
identify the best mitigation
measures for this problem. The
findings will be included in the
Environmental Management Plan
in the final report.

No company can really manage
the dust of tailing dams. Look at
the tailings dam of RPZC for
example.
In 1950 the VW was not the best
vehicle, but is today far better.
Similarly technology has changed
and we will consider the best

We have learned in the
newspapers that the two mining
giants are fighting over this
Gergarub mine. We are
concerned as a community.
What if they cannot reach a
consensus?
Yes, there are some elements of
dispute which basically pertains to
the interpretation of some clauses
of the agreement. We do not
want to community to suffer due
to these internal issues.
Since both mines expect this
project to be feasible, it was
decided that t he feasibility study
should continue despite of some
of the internal disagreements. We

The Gergarub deposit was found
on farm Spitzkop of Mr. Kotze.
Where is the intervention of
government to solve issues on his
farm such as the impact on
water? Maybe the government
should buy back the farm from
Mr. Kotze so that the nation can
benefit.
We will discuss and resolve this
issues at a different platform.
There are enough policies and
guidelines within the country’s
legal framework to resolve this
issue.

Why has the whole community
been invited and not only the
two mines and its workers and
the farm owner?
We want to involve the whole
community with this study.
Remember, the focus of the
meeting is to share project
information and identify areas of
concern to the community at
large, that we have to investigate
further. This meeting is being
recorded and the minutes will be
made public knowledge. We
want to be transparent
