Please consider the impact on

the increase of HIV/AIDS as a

result of this project. Contractors

should also be included in HIV

programmes as well as the influx

of workers.

We have an HIV/AIDs policy that

includes both the mine workers

and contractors. This also spills

over into the community. There

will also be a need for a medical

facility at the construction site so

that there is no additional pressure

on the facilities in town.

Skorpion has not experienced any

fatality to date. We are registered

with the Workman Compensation

Fund. In the event of an injury,

Social Security pays, but only up

to a certain bracket. We have

engaged with Social Security and

invited them to come to Skorpion

This project should benefit the

region and the town of Rosh

Pinah. What role does the

Namibian government play

ensuring that this will not be

owned by one individual only?

This mine will benefit the

community in terms of direct and

indirect employment, and

economic growth. Development

includes things like for example

roads, clinics, shopping malls.

Taxes and royalties are also paid

to the government which

contributes to the country’s

will be re-employment?

The local people should be

considered for these

positions.

The youth should also benefit

from employment

opportunities.

Women should also be

considered for employment.

We can be trained if we can

just get the opportunity.

Zinc close down, they could be re-

employed at Gergarub. Thus,

instead of retrenching people,

there will first be an opportunity for

re-employing them at Gergarub

and re-training them before

outsiders are sourced. But this has

not yet been finalised.

The socio-economic study will

include consultation with women

in the community. Skorpion is

having the highest level of women

employees in the Namibian

mining industry, but we are still not

happy. We will continue to ensure

Consider the shortage of skills.

The recruitment strategy that we

usually follow is that recruitment

starts within Rosh Pinah and then

moving to the North.

Potential also exists for Skorpion

existing employees and transfer

them to Gergarub. But yes, the

opportunities to other NIMT

is happening at NIMT in

Keetmanshoop, Arandis and

shareholder in the new mine these

activities will most likely continue

as the development of skills is

important to Skorpion Zinc.

Another mine will require a lot of

technical skills. Training institutions

like NIMT in Keetmanshoop will

play a major role in providing such

necessary skills. You cannot just

take from the pool without adding

to it.

The Obib Substation that was built

years of the Skorpion Zinc

was 96 MW. Over the years many

modifications and optimisation

leading to a reduction in power

consumption. Currently the

maximum demand for Skorpion

There are problems with existing

As part of this study we will look at

in Rosh Pinah. Thus, another site

was chosen.

We will have to answer these

questions in our report. We are

looking at for example cladding

the dam with rocks, keeping it wet

and are also considering the wind

direction.

Will there be an increase in the

level of dust already

experienced by the

communities?

One has to manage the dust

problem. We are doing studies to

identify the best mitigation

measures for this problem. The

findings will be included in the

Environmental Management Plan

in the final report.

No company can really manage

the dust of tailing dams. Look at

the tailings dam of RPZC for

example.

In 1950 the VW was not the best

vehicle, but is today far better.

Similarly technology has changed

We have learned in the

newspapers that the two mining

giants are fighting over this

Gergarub mine. We are

concerned as a community.

What if they cannot reach a

consensus?

Yes, there are some elements of

dispute which basically pertains to

the interpretation of some clauses

of the agreement. We do not

want to community to suffer due

to these internal issues.

Since both mines expect this

project to be feasible, it was

decided that t he feasibility study

should continue despite of some

of the internal disagreements. We

We are working closely with Rosh

The Gergarub deposit was found

on farm Spitzkop of Mr. Kotze.

Where is the intervention of

government to solve issues on his

farm such as the impact on

water? Maybe the government

should buy back the farm from

Mr. Kotze so that the nation can

benefit.

We will discuss and resolve this

issues at a different platform.

There are enough policies and

guidelines within the country’s

legal framework to resolve this

issue.

We want to involve the whole

community with this study.

Remember, the focus of the
