Second Sunday of Advent Page 3
For the better
Today’s gospel really calls us to the mat, doesn’t it? John the Baptist tells us we need to repent our ways if wewant to live in the kingdom of heaven. The weekly liturgy preparation resource, Living Liturgy, says thatrepentance is essentially to “change one’s mind.” When we change our mind, we conform to God’s will, not ourown. And when we conform to God’s way, our lives are changed … for the better.
This season of Advent offers us the opportunity to kick start the journey or renew ourselves in this process. ThisAdvent we offer two ways to meditate and reflect how we’re doing, what we need to change and discover whatcan be.
The Little Blue Book is our companion this Advent. In just six minutes a day, we will read a short passage fromLuke’s infancy narrative then meditate on what God is saying to us through those words. I find this prayer exerciseto be quite simple but so incredibly powerful. There’s always a little nugget of wisdom, an epiphany or thoughtthat arises and gives me something to meditate on. It can change your day and change your life … for the better.
The Christmas story is a story of love, hope, redemption and relationship. So, what happened? How did it turn intostuff, stress and debt? Along the way the best story in the world has become a story of what’s on sale. The AdventConspiracy challenges us to rethink Christmas and how we understand and celebrate it. It’s an opportunity to turnour focus away from the trappings of our consumer culture toward God’s way. When we reflect on the four tenetsof the Advent Conspiracy, we can change our minds and our lives … for the better. I challenge you to think abouthow you can worship fully, spend less, give more and love all this Advent and Christmas:
Worship fully – this means just what it says, in the midst of all the wonderful and the awful distractions of theseason we want to remain focused on Jesus, and sincere worship of Jesus and the Father.Spend less – it isn’t a call to stop giving gifts; it’s a call to stop spending money on gifts we won’t remember inless than a year. By spending wisely on gifts we free ourselves from the anxiety associated with debt so we cantake in the season with a full heart.Give more – this is all about the gift of time and presence to the people we care about … so much more importantthan giving more stuff.Love all – if Advent and Christmas are boiled down to their essence, the invitation is to love all, especially ourneighbor in need. By spending just a little less on gifts we free up our resources to love as Jesus loves by giving tothose who really need help.
Little Books and Advent Conspiracy booklets are available in the church lobby today!
Let’s conspire this Advent to change the way we celebrate Christmas and journey together to prepare ourhearts, minds and lives to make room for Jesus!
Siempre Adelante,

Bruises: Accidental or Suspicious? Many children play hard and can suffer bruises or injuries quitenaturally. Occasionally, it may be hard to tell whether an injury is aresult of roughhousing or abusive treatment. Most accidental bruisesare in common locations – knees, elbows, and foreheads. Bycontrast, bruises on a child’s neck or back could indicatemistreatment. Kids should be allowed to explore and learn theirlimits and get bruises. Suspicious bruises are warning signs thatshould not be ignored. Ask kids, “how did you get that bruise?” Forthe full VIRTUS® article “Accidental vs. Suspicious Bruising,”email jvienna@laarchdiocese.org.
