C.U.H.K. Music Department Ensemble-in-Residence Jenga – Percussion Quartet Jenga was founded in January 1998. The objective is to perform original percussion music and to promote works of local composers. The concept of the quartet goes back to 1996, when the founders as well as members of the quartet, which included Raymond Leung, Sophia Woo, Margie Tong and Choy Lap- Tak, all shared a strong desire to promote the rich variety of music from the percussion repertoire. The quartet was also honored to have Dr. Lung Heung Wing, former Principal Percussionist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, serving as its Honorary Adviser. Jenga members play with technical mastery and make use of various interpretative methods to display the forcefulness, gentleness, excessiveness, stability and colorful layering of percussion music. The Quartet has given numerous performances since its Debut Concert at APA on 29th April 1998. It has also collaborated with “Four Gig Heads” in April 2000, and with numerous others including Lung Heung-Wing and Alan Cumberland in the years that followed. In May 2000 the quartet served as Artist-in-Resident of The Radio & Television Hong Kong and produced two pre-recorded concerts and a live-broadcasting performance at the radio. The Quartet was also featured at the Chamber Music Showcase (II) in December 2000, Ode to Life Concert in May 2003, live and late broadcasting concert Music DNA in October 2003, and various campus concerts at HKUST and CUHK, etc. Jenga was twice appointed as ensemble-of-the-year for the New Generation Composition Concerts, respectively in 2003 and 2013.
