thoughts. Can you draw what might be in each

tigers’ heads? Write about what they are they

Play List

Make a playlist for your book.

Assign songs that would suit the different parts of the text.

Pick a different song for each character, making sure each song fits

the characters personality.

Make a Collage

Find pictures from magazines or online and create a collage that

represents what happened in your story. Try to find pictures to illustrate

the character, problem, solution, setting and events.

Write or record a book review for a book you have enjoyed reading. • What book did you read? • Who is the author/illustrator? • Did you like the book? Why or

Appendix 4 Science & Technology Changing States of Matter

Science Experiment: Collect a selection of solids, such as soap, chalk, playdoh, a stone, a block of wood, a sponge, jelly snake, elastic band, marbles, flour, laundry powder or rice. Use these materials to complete the science experiment below. Ensure you print out or copy the table below in your workbook before you begin.

After you have completed your experiment, write the following questions in your book and add your response:

• What do the different solids have in common? • What is different about them? • Are powders solids? How do we know? What properties do they have in common

with other solids?

Properties of solid materials:

What is one physical characteristic of a solid? Solids can be hard like a rock, soft like

fur, a big rock like an asteroid, or small rocks like grains of sand. The key is that solids

hold their shape and they don’t flow like a liquid. A rock will always look like a rock

unless something happens to it. The same goes for a diamond. Solids can hold their

shape because of their molecules are tightly packed together.

- A solid keeps its shape unless a force is put on it.

- Solids can change their shape if you: squash them, cut them or twist them.

- Solids do not change shape on their own.

- Solids do NOT have to be hard. Solids can be soft, bouncy or even fluffy.

- Words used to describe solids are called properties.

- Knowing the properties of materials can help you identify whether it is a solid, liquid or gas.

Mrs Morison’s PE Activity STATIC BALANCES – I have included some new balances for you to try. They are a little trickier than our other balances. Remember these are STRONG & STILL – like a statue. Hold each for 20 seconds.

WARM-UP – Use a dice, or a pack of cards, or write the numbers 1 – 10 on paper to select a random number between 1 & 10. Once you have your number, perform the following actions - squats, burpees, push ups - Select a new number for each warm-up exercise.

IMPROVE YOUR SKILL – CATCHING & BALL TOSS. (Part 2 – Learning how to juggle) These skills progress in difficulty. You do not need to be able to perform all skills perfectly but you should be aiming to improve YOUR consistency and confidence. Using a handball, tennis ball or another small ball/beanbag, practise your skills from last week. Remember, the more we practise, the more consistent we become. Read the ‘IMPORTANT KEYS’ below before practice. Revise & practise – Toss & catch with each hand until you feel that your catching has become consistent (it feels the same every time). Toss and catch down at waist level. Repeat the exercise, but this time after tossing the ball into the air, clap once before you catch the ball – still catching it with one hand only. Toss and catch down at waist level. Perform the exercise again, but this time after tossing the ball into the air, turn around once before you catch the ball – still catching it with one hand only. Toss and catch down at waist level.

IMPORTANT KEYS • throw the ball from waist level • the ball should travel close to your body • the ball should go above your shoulder height • be patient and let the ball fall back to your hand (don’t reach!) • catch the ball at your waist level and repeat!

Remember to keep watching the ball up into the air and back into your hand. As you improve, you may be able to use your peripheral vision to watch the ball.
