How time flies! In what seems to feel like a blink of the eye, half of 2012 is almost over and we will soon welcome the start of the second half of the year. For us at Malaysia Airlines, the mid-year marks a milestone in our airline’s history as we await with great anticipation the arrival of the first of our six A380 aircraft.

In early July, we look forward to putting Malaysia Airlines’ first A380 aircraft into commercial service on the Kuala Lumpur – London daily route.

Sporting its own blue wau logo and a new livery, the 494-seat aircraft will have a 3-class configuration. The Main Deck will have 8 First seats and 350 Economy Class seats, whilst the Upper Deck will have 66 Business seats and 70 Economy seats. With full-flat seats in First and Business and comfortable seats in Economy, coupled with the A380’s quiet interior, passengers are sure enjoy our in-flight hospitality and to arrive fresher on these direct flights to and from London!

There’s a magical curiosity about Istanbul that gives visitors a delicious chill of excitement that reverberates through their core. Istanbul holds a lifetime’s worth of travelers’ treasures. Anywhere else, equally if not more interesting, would be quite a challenge to find.

Albeit there are numerous tourist attractions, the crowds, over-exposure and over-emphasis of these spots which dampen the allure. But the real magic lays in the undiscovered or rather, the road less traveled.

The main bus station is way out of central Istanbul. So, if you are planning to visit other cities by bus, make sure you leave early enough, as it can take up to 90 minutes to get there (depending on traffic). Thankfully, there are buses that leave for the bus station from Taksim Place every 30 minutes.

SHOP TILL YOU DROPShould you fancy a spot of shopping after a hearty breakfast, quality leather goods in Istanbul can be found in Aksaray, a Russian district in the multinational city. Many a great bargain has been driven in the area, which is just a short walk away from the ever-popular Grand Bazaar.

Giving true meaning to the term “hidden attraction”, the Yeralti Mosque in the Karakoy district is an underground mosque in a ghostly crypt of the former Castle of Galata. The mosque’s side chapel also houses the tombs of two Arab soldiers.

To end your day, live it up at the nightlife gems scattered around Istiklal Street in the Nevizade district. Nightspots like Peyote Bar, Purgatory, Nayah, Araf and Haymatlos provide party-goers an insight into a real Turkish fiesta complete with panaromic views over the city thanks to their strategic rooftop locations.

The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Downtown Los Angeles is a museum that explores the art, culture and science of scents and smells, while housing an extensive collection of perfumes.

CULTURE VULTURE

This private museum located inside the home of Fred and Billie Weisman is called the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, which displays more than 400 masterpieces including works from famous greats like Picasso and Cezanne.

One such place is Nakameguro, a fantastic little enclave that is a hotbed for fashionable cafés, bars, hip boutiques and modern architecture. And while businesses are thriving, most of them still retain that low-key and laid-back feel.

The neigbourhood has an atmosphere of cutting-edge contemporary and stylish retro, and is a perfect place to spend a nice summer day, idling in and out of the shops, like the Mizuma Art Gallery, Cow Books – which sells rare and out-of-print publications, and Vase, a clothing boutique known for its odd-ball combination of modern and classic styles.

Nakameguro is like its own small village, and is best ventured now, before it becomes a tourist trap as more people find out about it.

While a variety of locations make South East Asia a fantastic holiday destination, the more popular places can sometimes be too crowded. Adopt a sense of adventure, and you will discover remarkable holiday spots, which, most importantly, is quiet and (almost) free of tourists.

Kep is the quiet, shy sibling to Sihanoukville’s reputation as a party capital. A beautiful French colonial town, it offers the visitor peaceful, idyllic and deserted beaches, where it’s just you, a handful of other people, and the lapping sounds of the waves. And if you’re into island hopping and fresh seafood, take a boat ride to Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island). Once you’re there, don’t forget to try out the local delicacy:� crab with cracked pepper sauce.

While other tourists take the boat or the bus, discover the area along one of the world’s great rivers on bicycle. Cycling will take you along dirt tracks by the paddy fields, where you can explore and discover its beauty at your own pace.

Visitors to Malaysia tend to stick to the Peninsular – Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi are among the more popular destinations. But look beyond the norm, and you’ll find two places that are different, surprising and enchanting.

BAKO NATIONAL PARK

Small but diverse, the Bako National Park near Kuching in Sarawak is home to almost every type of vegetation found in Borneo. The park is also quite easy to explore, with well-maintained trails and jungle treks, as well as stretches of sandy, secluded bays for you to relax. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the rare proboscis monkeys living in the park.

SEPILOK ORANGUTAN SANCTUARY

Here’s a vacation with a difference – by hanging out at an orangutan sanctuary. Located just 25km from Sandakan in Sabah, a short trip to the sanctuary is a beautiful way to observe these shy and gentle creatures. The more adventurous ones may also trek through the mangrove forest.

Life itself is a journey we all must take. And along the way, we are faced with decisions. Some may be daunting while others exciting. But every so often, we’re faced with decisions that can also be life-changing.

Well, that moment has arrived. Leading me to a major crossroad that will soon change my life.

After more than 25 years with the airline, practically giving birth to the frequent flyer programme; watching Enrich blossom and flourish while celebrating major milestones and even establishing new ones, it was time to take my leave and venture out into the world. Embark on a new journey and see where the road takes me.

Yes, we’ve had quite a run! As it seems like only yesterday we introduced the Enrich programme. From its humble Blue beginnings, we’ve watched it grow and garner more and more members, escalating loyalty to Platinum levels. I’ve seen the World of Riches evolve from a four-page publication to what it is today, over a decade later. And of course, let’s not forget our popular Indulgence series that’s opened up a world of new experiences for you!

I hold myself up with great pride to say we have come a long way. Which is why goodbyes are never easy. While I’ve had the pleasure and support of a wonderful team, I will also cherish the unyielding loyalty of members like you. And I certainly hope you too have enjoyed the experiences we’ve delivered over the years.

Now as I pass the torch to my successor, I trust you will continue to look forward to more exciting experiences and encounters with Enrich and soon, the partnership with the oneworld® alliance.

recently increased the content of its library of movies, TV programmes and songs on its fleet of Boeing 737-800, 777-200, 747-400 and new Airbus 330-300.

The increase is part of the airline’s efforts to enhance the in-flight experience of its customers, and to give its passengers even greater creature comforts during their journeys.

Malaysia Airlines also plans to extend this upgrade to cover the contents of Going Places, its monthly travel magazine; Select, its in-flight entertainment guide; and Temptations, the in-flight sales catalogue in the coming months.

assengers arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on the afternoon of 14 January 2012 were greeted with an

unusual scene of ‘song and dance’ as they made their way out of the Arrival Hall on Level 3.

To the delight of unsuspecting onlookers, plus the odd stares of disbelief, visitors at KLIA witnessed some 100 singers and dancers break into spontaneous entertainment as part of Malaysia Airlines’ special flash mob event held to welcome the New Year with a bang.

Themed ‘Missing You’, the flash mob, which featured the Malaysia Airlines cabin crew in street wear and full uniform, lasted 10 minutes, and featured a fun medley of eight popular hit songs in various languages. The songs included Malaysia Airlines’ theme song “We Fly”, Janet Jackson’s “Miss You Much” and Rahim Maarof’s “Istana Menanti”.

The flash mob was put together with the talents from Enfiniti Productions and renowned Malaysian professional dance choreographer Pat Ibrahim of Puteri Gunung Ledang, P. Ramlee and The Secret Life of Nora musicals fame.

Palaysia Airlines’ new fleet of Airbus A380s signals an exciting new level of comfort, luxury and convenience in long haul travel.

The airlines’ flagship aircraft features a new livery, with a modern interpretation of the rich ‘wau’ heritage, as well as a newly designed ‘Malaysia Airlines’ logo, emblazoned with contemporary colours and dynamic font.

This makes Malaysia Airlines the first airline to introduce the A380 into service using a uniquely refreshed look and feel, instead of the regular corporate identity.

The aircraft demonstrates the national carrier’s commitment towards using new avenues to deliver its renowned Malaysian Hospitality brand experience in fresh and exciting ways.

The first A380 of Malaysia’s national carrier will operate three times weekly on the Kuala Lumpur-London route from 1 July 2012. The second A380 will also be introduced on this route at the end of August 2012 to offer double daily operations, while the third will be used for the Kuala Lumpur –Sydney leg.

Mhilst the national carrier is rationalizing its network as part of Business Plan to return

to profitability, the entry into oneworld® will considerably enhance its network while providing baseload demand from fellow oneworld® members.

While many of our members have had plenty of wonderful memories from their stay at Hotel Equatorial Kuala Lumpur, we are sad to say that the present hotel will be closing on 31 March 2012.

This is to facilitate a total rebuild of the hotel, which will take place on the same site. We are confident that the new Hotel Equatorial Kuala Lumpur will be bigger and more stately, yet possessing the same heart for hospitality that it is renowned for.

With the closing, Hotel Equatorial Kuala Lumpur will be removed from our list of partner hotels for the time being. But we are looking forward to its re-opening, and to welcoming the hotel back into our family of partners in the not-too-distant future.
