Percentage of unemployment

Main types of transportation People use their own cars to travel to work. Our public transport system is poor. We are busy building new roads and motorways.

Current ( or possible ) environmental problems

Over exploitation of our peatlands threatens this unique habitat. Air and noise pollution due to the heavy traffic which passes through our village. Our waterways are threatened by agricultural practices.

VILLAGE/ CITY KZ01 Name Ust-Kamenogorsk is the center of East-Kazakhstan. Urban/rural This city is urban because there are 10 big factories in it and

some of them are the largest in Kazakhstan Population size 309,000 people Official language(s) Due to the high numbers of Russians in Kazakhstan, as well as

to policies the implemented when Kazakhstan was part of the USSR, about two-fifths of population speaks Russian. The official language is Kazakh, but the majority speaks Russian. Russian is commonly used as the language of interethnic communication.

Main occupation/trade The main occupation of our city Ust- Kamenogorsk is mining and conversion of the non-feroy metals. We export our products to Russia, China and other countries

Percentage of unemployment 9888 people by 09/01/2003 Main types of transportation We have almost all types of transportation: buses, cars, trams,

trains, and planes. Current (or possible) environmental problems

East Kazakhstan is one of the most ecologically unfavorable regions of Kazakhstan and even of whole Central Asia. Semipalatinsk is famous in the whole world for its polygon. Even if there’s no more experiments on the polygon, the consequences of that awful science activities still keep on disturbing inhabitants of East Kazakhstan.Ust-Kamenogorsk is an industrial city. Such giants of metallurgical industry as The Ulba Metallurgical Plant, Led Zinc Plant, Titanium &Magnesium Integrated Work etc. are situated here/ For years, 90% of the industrial production in East Kazakhstan was exported to the CIS. Demands for precede ores; uranium heavy metals, etc were met without regard to pollution. In the Ust-Kamenogorsk area, an estimated one billion tons of waste has accumulated. Two areas in the center of the city store more than 5.5 million tons of uranium and beryllium waste products. Radioactive wastes constitute more than 100,00 tons in volume. Untreated waste is dumped into the rivers. In 1991, 354 million cubic meters sewage emptied into the water reservoirs. The Irtysh River contains up to 50 times the maximum allowable copper and zinc up to 218 times allowable petroleum products. An industrial explosion in 1990 spread beryllium compounds over most of Ust-Kamenogorsk, and beryllium levels in the population rose to 50 to 400 percent above the acceptable maximum. The problem’s solution seems to be easy: to decrease the rate of producing dangerous to health products. But it ought to be taken in account that those plants are the major places where people of Ust-Kamenogorsk are employed. If we forbid the industry, we will lose our work places. It was required from plants’ owners to set up the special filters to make the wastes less harmful for people and all alive. But it’s too expensive and not all organizations can afford it. There are payments that local authority pays for health harm to people. But it’s not improving the situation. The effect of such environmental degradation is mirrored in the health of the populace. The cancer rate is reportedly 10 times greater than in the rest of Kazakhstan. Many people suffer from different kinds of cancer, skin diseases, and hematological diseases. That’s why the life expectancy in Ust-Kamenogorsk is about 61 years. The need for a strong environmental cleanup and protection plan is clear.

VILLAGE/CITY Name Ferghana Urban/rural In our region urban people work in plants and

factories (a Textile Mill, chemicals plants, etc.) They live in apartment houses or in private houses. They don’t have own field, only small gardens in their houses. And usually they have to buy fruit and vegetables from the market. Rural people usually have their own fields and small farms. And almost all their time they spend there. There is big difference between city life and village life (no modern conveniences in villages – hot and cold running water, heating, gas etc.)

Population size Over 250 000 Official language(s) Uzbek, but Russian is very popular too ( as a

language of former Soviet Union) Main occupation/trade Cotton, silk fabrics, oil and gas |Private business Percentage of unemployment 12 % Main types of transportation Marshrutka, taxi, buses Current ( or possible ) environmental problems

We have many possible and current problems in our city and region. For example, geographical location of our valley (like an upside-down bowl ) and pollution of the air, water and our lands brings many problems with health – diseases, cancer, problems with lungs. We don’t have garbage refinery plants, we move city garbage to the suburbs. Because of that there are a lot of deseases, harmful insects. Chemical industry has very bad influence on people too. The main problem of our region is a problem of Aral Sea and lack of water resources.
