Straight Talk toFarmer-s

For the first time in the historyof ooutn Africa farmers not onlyin the Transvaal but throughoutthe Union, were frankly toldrecently by the Minister ofNative Affairs, Major Piet vandel' Byl, that the African, likeany other person, had the rightto sell his labour in the bestmarket. To the farmers, no doubt, this straight talk, was disappoint-ing and perhaps even exasperat-ing. For they had hoped that ashad been the case in the past, their demands for conscriptedAfrican labour wquld not onlybe sympathetically considered by,but would also have the blessingsof, the Minister of Native Affairs,But instead. they were told un-equivocally that "I urge you notto ask me to do impossible things.which would savour of con-scripted labour. and the merestsuggestion of which could onlycreate bitterness in the heart ofthe Native. who is watching us ashis trustee. If I were to agree tosome of the suggestions put for-ward from all parts of the Unionsince I have been Minister. toforce Natives to work, I wouldrightly be condemned, not onlyby my own people, but by theworld outside, and in the endwould fail."

Although this statesman-likewarning fell on deaf ears, sincethe farmers, after hearing it.decided to press on theirdemands. the fact remains thatMajor van del' Byl has giventhem food for thought, and hasmade White South Africa realisethat Africans are watching everymove Europeans are making ininter-racial relations. They aredaily becoming bitter because ofthe disabilities imposed uponthem. As the result of oppression, they are unfortunately developinga rabid racialism which is fastbecoming a menace to inter-racial harmony and peace, andthis disturbing feature of ourrace relations cannot be ignoredneither by those in authority norby the European population ingeneraL Nor can it be eliminatedby the enforcement of drasticmeasures. There is one thing which the

white people of this country mustknow, and of which unfortunatelythe majority of them seem to beunaware, that is that the Africansof to-day are not those of thirtyyears ago. Since 1910 they havelearnt by bitter experience thattheir only way of escape frommisrule and injustice is throughthe organisation of the varioustribes into a national unit, andthis movement to-day is gatheringmomentum. There can be nodoubt that the African of to-day,whether educated o'r not, hasdiscovered that as far as thewhite man is concerned. whatmatters, is not that he belongs tothis or that tribe, but that as ablack man he should be deniedthe right to enjoy the fruits ofhis labour and to live his lifein accordance with the principlesof democracy. As we have already pointed out

this race-consciouness cannot beignored nor suppressed bydrastic measures. It is a forcewith which White South Africawill have to reckon, and to dis-regard it is to court "troubles. Weare glad, therefore, that theMinister of Native Affairs hasdrawn the attention of ourEuropean countrymen to the factthat as trustees they are beingwatched by Africans who expectthem to discharge the duties oftheir trusteeship justly' andhonestly. Senator Brookes urged that theAfrican should be given directmunicipal representation, moreadequate representation in Parlia-ment, and proper recognition oftrade unions under sane, forcefulleadership.

Discussing the social colour bar,he said that, so far as he knew, the African did not feel it whenit was not accompanied by dis-courtesy and the removal of pri-vileges. But they objected when i,tdeprived them of the amenttresof life, and when they suffereddiscourtesies at the hands of allclasses of people; for instance, instores and by railway officialsThis was not general, but a

sufficiently-large number of inci-dents occurred to cause a greatdeal of heart burning. The remedy was to raise the

African's economic status andsubstitute him for Europeans inservices designed for the African. For example, there was no reasonwhy an African should not sellthird-class railway tickets. Therewas no reason either why thework of a junior clerk in thNative Affairs Departm nt mightnot be performed by an African.

not yet worn off? This often bringsdisaster, and the score reads onefor ten runs, which is very bad.

A solid foundation must be laidand the two batsmen must do it.We have got prolific scorers likeFrank Roro, H. Roto, M. Mama, A.Mbatyoti, Jadula, Mafongosi, Tom,

ex- Nolutshungu, Ximiya and manyothers; but these must have a goodfoundation laid for them. Playersmentioned above have no right toreturn from their wickets beforethe score reaches the 400 mark. But this must be done by a solidfoundation of Manzingana andGwele. I have, in every tourna-ment, always been caused anxietywhen Roro goes to open. Firstly, heis our best batsman, and secondly,he is very aggresive; like Tom,he can hit a clean "six" even withthe first ball. His aggression wouldbe far more useful to his side ifhe goes in No.2 batsman.

drink FOOD

Every time you give yourchildren Bournville Cocoa todrink you are actually feedingthem. Doctors will tell you thisbecause they know that it con-tains those substances whichchildren must have if they areto be sturdy, strong, fit and

full of energy. And anotherthing; children drink thisfood eagerly because they loveits rich, delicious, chocolateflavour.

Bournville Cocoa costs only1/3 for 1- Ib.-enough to make56 cups of cocoa.

Put one teaspoonful of cocoa in an~b,' M~~empty cup: add as much milk and II .

sugar as you would to make a cup .of tea: then mix cocoa, milk and sugar into apaste until no lumps of cocoa remain: finally, fill the cup with very hot water and stir well.
