1.Rachel Carson was an environment conservationist whose book 'Silent Spring' shook the world. Inthe book, she presented a detailed study on the use of pesticides and the effect they had on theenvironment. One day, a woman in America noticed an aero plane spraying a pesticide called DOTover her yard. It was meant to km some insects that wouJdkill her plants but a few days later, shefound some dead birds on her lawn.

2. She found out that DOT that was sprayed to kill the pest had also kiJIedthe birds. She wrote a letterto Rachel Carson asking her to do something about the spraying of DOT. So Rachel did a lot ofresearch and wrote a book. She named the book 'Silent Spring' because, if all the birds were to die, there would be no songs of birds during spring. In fact there would be no humans to listen to it either.

3. Here are some facts she included in her book:• The bald eagle (the national symbol of the USA) was becoming extinct because the DOT in the

environment prevented their eggs from hatching.~ In an American state called Illinois, a spray that was used to kif! Japanese beetles had also killed

thousands of squirrels, rabbits, cats and birds!• Poisons don't really kill the insects. With long use of these poison, the bugs adapt to the poisons

and become super bugs that are resistant to the poison.• When cows eat plants that have been sprayed with DOT, the poison appears in the milk that the

cows produce. When we drink that milk we ingest poison.• She added that DOT and other pesticides would cause a cancer epidemic that would wipe out

the human population along with other living things.• Poison sprayed in one place don't evaporate or stay there.

4. DOT sprayed in America is carried by rain into the rivers and out into the oceans, and ends up inIceland, Japan, the Arctic and the Antarctic. When President John. F. Kennedy read this book, heappointed a special team of top scientists to study the matter. The scientists found out that everythingRachel had written was true. India is one of the few countries that sfiJI produces DOT in largequantities. It is commonly used to kill bugs in our gardens and to kilt the insects that spread diseaseslike malaria and typhus.
