    Wheat Weeds

    There are several grass and broadleaf weeds that must be controlled for good

    plant growth and seed yields.

    Some weeds can contaminate the seed at harvest time for processing purposes.

    These include wild garlic and wild onion. If they are not controlled with herbicides

    the crop could be ruined.

    Causal organism : fungus Ustilago zeae

    Symptoms : Soft tumors on all parts of plant, mostly cob.

    Tumors, when mature, split, and release

    Control measures : Practise crop rotation and sanitation. Or, grow

    resistant varieties

    Causal organism : virus

    Symptoms : Leaves of affected plant become crinkled and

    deformed. Yellow or pink discoloration

    Disease : black arm, or angular leaf spot

    Cusal organism : bacteria Xanthomonas malvacearum

    Symptoms : All above ground parts of plant attacked.

    Angular spots on leaves and branches turn

    dark brown with reddish margin when old.

    Control measures : Treat seed with organo-mercurials before

    sowing. Also, destroy all cotton plant debris.

    Disease : red rot

    Cusal organism : fungus Colletotrichum falcatum

    Symptoms : Leaves wither, cane shrinks. Black specks onshriveled rind. Split cane gives sour smell.

    Control measure : Plant clean cuttings dipped in 5% formalin.

    Or, grow resistant varieties.

    SWEET POTATOES

    Disease : black rot

    Causal organism : fungus Ceratostomella funbriata

    Symptoms : Tubers attacked, foliage turns yellow and

    sickly. Black cankers on portion underground.

    Grey-black, circural, depressed spots on

    fleshly roots.

    Control measure : Treat seed tubers in mercuric chloride

    solution, or 2 borax solution. Also, carefully

    store seed tubers, and rotate seed-bed.

    Causal organism : virus

    Symptoms : Circural spots on both sides of leaves. Spots

    on upper surface dark brown with yellow halo.

    Control measures : Plant seeds early and close. Also, use clean

    seed, and uproot and burn infected plants.
