The glowing sun was worshiped as a god in the

ancient times. Many used to call him Phoebus as

well. This bright star is the most radiant element of

the sky.

Its energy reaches the earth as radiation that comes

with electromagnetic waves of several lengths. The

solar spectrum consists of 3 zones:

The infrared (IR-A, IR-B), the visible and ultraviolet

that distinguishes to UVA: responsible for skin aging,

UVB: responsible for sunburns and melanoma and

UVC: is being intercepted by the ozone of the

atmosphere. An effective sunscreen should carry

broad absorption filters for UVA and UVB radiation

and be photostable.

Many people see the long suntan as something

normal, even though their skin has a different

opinion! Tanning is a reaction of the skin, an attempt

to protect itself and avoid further damage from the

exposure under the sun. When use sunscreen, we are

giving some time to the melanocytes of the skin to

produce melanin so that it protects itself without

being subjected to the harmful effects of the sun

(sunburn, erythema, photoaging, melanoma).

Have you ever seen photos of twins that have grown

in different places of the world? The twin that lived in

a place with plenty of sunshine looked at the age of

60 as if he were 20 years older that the twin that

grew up in a place with lesser sunshine.

Despite some people’s strong belief that tanned skin

is more attractable, the truth is that deep wrinkles,

blotches, couperoses, roughness and lack of

elasticity that are being caused by the cumulated and

unfortified sun exposure, is far from attractive!

And remember that we need sunscreen not only at

the beach, but also in the city, at our walks, when we

tend our garden, when we exercise, when we enjoy

our coffee, at the playground, at our rides, at any

activity we do in the open!

WHY ALOE VERA?

Aloe Vera, deeply studied and deified, has

• Aloe Vera: the high concentration of 40% Aloe Vera

protects and restores the skin during sunbathing and

afterwards. It restores the stratum corneum and

refreshes, nourishes, moisturizes deeply and offers a

bright look to the face.

• Vitamin E: strong antioxidant action, acts against

free radicals that cause premature aging. Protects

perfectly the skin from the harmful effects of the sun

but also restores impressively if damaged.

• Litchi Chinesis Fruit Extract: small but wonder red

tropical fruit, rich in antioxidants and nourishing

REMEMBER…

• Homework! Apply the sunscreen at home!

Half an hour before falling into the sun’s

arms is a good while, so that the skin

absorbs the ingredients and lets them act

effectively for our protection.

• A shot of sunscreen! We should use

enough quantity of sunscreen. One

teaspoon of sunscreen for the face and

neck is enough, whereas one shot-glass is

needed for the rest of the body, so that

the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is assured.

• Repetition is the mother of… protection!

Apply sunscreen again after whipping,

playing and exercising, tight hugging or

after 2 hours at rest on the sunbed.

• Even if… we lie under the shadow,

umbrellas or wear clothes, we should

wear sunscreen.

• Alarm Bell! Risk bearing groups like

children, people with fair, freckled skin or

skin with nevi, photosensibility or

melanoma history should be more typical

and careful!

• It goes without saying…that we avoid

exposing ourselves or our loved ones by

the time the sun rays fall vertically on the

face of the earth, i.e 11.00 to 16.00.

SORELY MISTAKEN…“I will use last year’s sunscreen, it hasn’t expired

yet.”

Last year’s sunscreen came with us on holidays. It got

a hard time inside the beach bag, got suntanned on

the sunbed, sat in the sauna while forgotten in the

car for hours. Sand, sea, sweat might have been

transferred from your fingers inside the bottle, where

the germs may have settled. Its consistency and

texture may have been distorted. Unless we kept it

with its pack intact in a dry and cool place and its

expiration date is still to go.

“I am very dusky, I don’t need a sunscreen.”

It is true that dark skin phototypes produce more

melanin and are therefore much more protected from

the sun, however cutaneous mutations do happen to

those people as well – these people have also

possibilities for skin cancer. Perhaps a darker skin

could save the sunburn, but premature aging, blots

and melanoma do not make any discriminations.

Remember also, that people of these categories

become aware of the deformations in a more

advanced phase and thus the treatment is even more

difficult.

“I will apply a sunscreen with SPF 50 so that I will

be protected until the evening.”

The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a number that

shows how many times more can we stay in the sun,

when wearing sunblock, without being subjected to

its effects than if we weren’t wearing any sunscreen

at all. If we are able to stay in the sun without

sunscreen for 10 minutes, by using a sunscreen SPF

50, we can stay in the sun for 500 minutes. If we

won’t sweat. And if we won’t get into the water

again. And if we won’t use a towel. Seems hard to

happen.

“I’ve made up my mind… I will cover my body

from head to toe.”

That wouldn’t be a good solution either! If you put a

cloth in front of a light and the light is visible, then

you’re not covered. Only when the lamp is

completely invisible, is the cloth protective. We need

a dark coloured (yes, that’s right, dark coloured!)

thickly weaved cloth to be well protected.

So have a Happy Summer and if you come across anyone on the beach, who wears a white, wet T-shirt and tries
