Applying for the English Language Institute
When to Apply The priority Processing Deadline for admission to the English Language Institute (ELI) is two months before the start of the session. Students who apply after this deadline will be assessed a late application processing fee
or, in some cases, be accepted for a future term.
Application Requirements Admission to the ELI (which can be followed by academic study) is open to all non-native speakers who have completed their higher/secondary school education. Send these things to apply.
1. ELI International student application completed and signed.
2. An Affidavit of Support, completed and signed by the financial sponsor, sent by mail.3. Original letter from sponsor's bank indicating the sponsor's ability to pay for student expenses, sent by
4. Admission fee of $60.00 ($100 late application fee) paid by credit card authorization form, or paid by
cashier's check, money order, or personal check to the University of Houston-Downtown. Personal
checks must be in U.S. dollars and imprinted with the account holder's name and address.
5. Copy of passport pages that show student identification information and passport expiration date.
Notification of Admission A decision about admission is made after the application is received. An email is sent to notify the student of missing items. A letter of acceptance and an I-20 form are sent when a student is admitted. The student uses the
I-20 to obtain an F-1 student visa.

International students on a student visa must have a financial sponsor. This sponsor must assume full financial
responsibility for the student's education, a minimum of $25,187.00 per year. (This amount is subject to change
without notification.)
This Affidavit of Support and an attached original bank letter attesting to a minimum of $25,187.00 on deposit
must be completed and on file with the university prior to the release of the Form I-20 AB.

Please read the following statements carefully. You must agree to each statement before being
considered for admission.
I understand and agree that:
1. I must make my own arrangements for housing.
2. I must pay the required fee for medical/hospitalization.
3. I have read and understood all admissions procedures. I understand that all documents and materials
relating to my admission should be sent to the Office of International Admissions. I also understand that
the $60 application fee is non-refundable and that my application will not be processed without the fee.
4. I must give written permission to the University of Houston-Downtown for anyone other than myself to
request information about the status of my application and/or admission.
5. My original application, fee and materials are good for one year. After that year has passed, if I wish to
update my application, I must re-apply and pay an additional $60 application fee.
6. I accept immigration restrictions, which prohibit all off-campus employment and require completion of a
full course of study (260 class hours) each fall and spring session.
7. I must be in Houston on or before the date specified on the I-20 form. If I cannot arrive on time, I must
ask to come in a later session.
8. I must return the old I-20 form to the University of Houston-Downtown before a new I-20 can be issued
and/or if I decide not to enroll at the University of Houston-Downtown.
