English Indices of Deprivation

• The English Indices of Deprivation measure relative levels of deprivation in 32,844 small areas or neighbourhoods, called Lower-layer Super Output Areas, in England

Headlines: National and London

• Nationally 88% of the neighbourhoods that are in the most deprived in 2019 were also the most deprived according to the IMD 2015.

• Deprivation is dispersed across England. 61% of LA districts contain at least one of the most deprived neighbourhoods in England.

• Many London boroughs have seen a reduction in the proportions of their neighbourhoods that are highly deprived from the last IMD in 2015.

• 7/10 LA districts with the highest levels of income deprivation among older people are in London

Headlines: Lewisham

• In relative terms Lewisham has become less deprived since 2015. It is now ranked 63rd most deprived LA, compared to 48th in 2015, 31st in 2010 and 39th for 2007.

• However, relative to London, Lewisham has become more deprived moving from 10th most deprived to 7th.

• 50% of Lewisham’s most deprived LSOAs in 2019 were the most deprived in 2015, compared to 88% for the whole of England

• Crime has seen the biggest improvement in ranking

• Barriers to Housing & Services has seen the worse decline in ranking

Crime - Domain

• Lewisham has seen the greatest relative improvement in the Crime domain (from 14th to 57th). The Crime Domain measures the risk of personal and material victimisation at local level in four ways:

Violence – number of recorded violent crimes (18 recorded crime types in 2016/17; 20 recorded crime types in 2017/18) per 1,000 at risk population

• Burglary – number of recorded burglaries (4 recorded crime types) per 1,000 at risk population

• Theft – number of recorded thefts (5 recorded crime types) per 1,000 at risk population

• Criminal damage – number of recorded crimes (8 recorded crime types) per 1,000 at risk population.
