English in sport and active leisure principal learning

Sport and active leisure is an exciting and high-profile industry reflecting the growing understanding of its importance for individuals, society and the economy. The principal learning develops the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to work in a wide range of contexts, including play work, leisure facilities operation, event management, stadium management and safety, youth work, fitness, the outdoors, sports surfaces, grounds maintenance and sport. It provides many opportunities to develop speaking and listening skills in presenting, in discussion, in teamwork and in coaching. Students need to read material from a range of sources. There are also many opportunities to write reports, proposals, or materials for a campaign.

Level 1A number of units require extensive speaking and listening, for example in participating in discussions on aspects of health and the benefits of regular physical activity (•Edexcel (Level 1 unit 3) ).In undertaking enquiries and investigations, for example in researching the key components for a healthy lifestyle (•AQA (Level 1 unit 1) ), students will need to read a wide range of text types. In some units students are required to read texts with scientific or technical language, for example language introducing the four main body systems (•Edexcel (Level 1 unit 3) ) or the language of equality and diversity legislation (•OCR (Level 1 unit 6) ). In organising and presenting their findings, students will write in a range of formats. Almost all the units involve research that may be presented or reported in a written or oral form and most have an element of review/ appraisal, which may also be written or oral.

Level 2Students have many chances to develop speaking and listening skills. For example, focus on customer service delivery provides an excellent opportunity for role play or simulation (•VTCT (Level 2 unit 7) ). Discussion and negotiation skills will be required when students work in a team or explore leadership skills (•Edexcel (Level 2 unit 2) ). There is also the opportunity for self review, which encourages students to reflect on how they have adapted their spoken language to a particular audience or context (•AQA (Level 2 unit 7) ).Students need to read texts employing the scientific language of anatomy and physiology (•Edexcel (Level 2 unit 3) ); the technical terms associated with different business models (•OCR (Level 2 unit 5) ) and the language of policy and legislation (•VTCT (Level 2 unit 4) ). Opportunities for writing in a range of formats are required throughout. For example, students review and report on a media campaign focusing on a social agenda (•Edexcel (Level 2 unit 6) ) and organise what they have learnt about maximising access to leisure facilities (•OCR (Level 2 unit 8) ).

Level 3Almost all the units could involve oral presentations, such as presenting proposals for enhancing performance (•Edexcel (Level 3 unit 4) ) or recommending policy changes or making proposals for a campaign to increase access/inclusion (•VTCT (Level 3 unit 8) ). Similarly, in reading, while there are ample opportunities in all units, the range at this level is more varied, more challenging and often more theoretical. Many of the topics, for example, require familiarity with specialist language and discourse, such as that of economics and ethics (•VTCT (Level 3 unit 6) ) or social sciences (•AQA (Level 3 unit 8) ). The writing opportunities at level 3 cover a similar range of formats and styles to those at the lower levels but the complexity of material and the demands of the audience and purpose are significantly more challenging, for example when exploring the tension between commercialism and ethics arising from globalisation (•AQA (Level 3 unit 6) ). Students have frequent opportunities to produce reports, plans, proposals or recommendations.

Information, advice and guidance supporting level 3

Young people who are considering degree courses which require substantial analytical writing, such as English, history, or journalism, should be advised to look closely at the entry requirements of higher education institutions and to consider taking a qualification offering extended development of analytical thinking or literary skills as their additional and specialist learning.
