Children with autism have difficulties with communication. Often children with autism have a delay in speech and in severe cases sometimes do not speak at all. Some also fail to use gestures to replace words. How well children with autism will be able to function as they grow older can often be predicted based on their early language skills. When children with autism are able to speak, they may repeat exactly what is said to them. Some even quote the whole conversation. Many children with autism have a limited number of intense interests. They may also be preoccupied with parts of the objects rather than the objects themselves. For example, they may prefer to spin the wheel of a toy car instead of pretending to drive it or they may dismantle parts of the objects. Frequently, children with autism will insist on doing things in exactly the same way or on following the same routine from day to day. Thus, they may become very upset when there is a change in their routine. When upset or excited, they may also harm themselves by skin-biting or head-banging. They may be aggressive towards other people or objects, or may show extreme anger or frustration.

29. What difficulty do children with autism have?A They are not able to interact with others.B They have are unable to play on their own.C They are not able to follow a routine.D They have difficulty sleeping.

Section B: Summary

[10 marks]

Read the passage and complete the following task.

Scientific researchers use animals to improve human health. Successful medical treatments, including antibiotics and vaccines, have been developed through animal experimentation. Many scientists argue that animal experimentation is important for the investigation* and treatment of serious diseases such as cancer, AIDS, and heart disease. However, animal rights activists have protested against various forms of animal experimentation as animals, like human beings, feel pain. The use of animals in sports too has resulted in many cases of animal injury and death. Animal rights advocates have also expressed concern over the conditions in many zoos and circuses. Animals in these facilities are forced to live in unnatural habitats and climates. They argue that such conditions promote abnormal* animal behaviour such as pacing. Zoos maintain, however, that their institutions provide educational, zoological, and conservational benefits. Many cases of cruelty and neglect of animals kept as pets have also been reported.

* investigation – an official examination of the facts about a situation* abnormal – different from what is usual or expected

Teacher’s Day Celebration in SMK Taman Bestari

On May 16, SMK Taman Bestari celebrated Teacher’s Day. The occasion was celebrated on a modest scale. As usual the day kicked off with the usual school assembly. The only difference being the teachers sang ‘Kami Guru Malaysia’ in addition to the national anthem. The line of activities for the day began with the presentation of a song by the school choir group. They sang the song, Black and White much to the delight of Michael Jackson’s fans. This is then followed by a traditional dance by the performers of our Cultural Dance Troupe. The stage performance was followed by a badminton competition between students against teachers. The students were excited to have the chance to defeat their teachers and they did just that. After the games were over the prefects presented the teachers with a stalk of rose each to show their appreciation. Then, the head prefect presented the teachers with a cake. Everybody sang the school song and the principal was invited to cut the cake along with some senior teachers. The teachers were then invited to have lunch prepared by the members of Living Skill Club. The meal was simple but the teachers savoured them with pride because they were cooked by the students. Prepared byThe Head PrefectSMK Taman Bestari

Section C: Literature

Black BeautyThe main theme in the story Black Beauty is that we should treat animals with kindness. By making the horses the main characters in the stories and by making the horses voice their grievances, the writer drives home the point that animals, like human beings have the capacity to feel and therefore should be treated humanely. The women mistreat the animals by making the horses use checkreins in order to make them look fashionable. The checkreins cause much pain to the horses but are totally ignored. When the horses rebel, as Ginger has done, she is sold to do other menial jobs. Ginger continues to fight for her right for humane treatment but in the end is so cruelly treated that she hopes for death to end her soffering.

The Boscombe Valley MysteryThe main theme in the story The Boscombe Valley Mystery is crime does not pay. Black Jack of Ballarat thought that all his problems were solved when he became rich. He did so by robbing and killing. Black Jack was the leader of a gang of robbers in Ballarat, Victoria. He and his gang of men had ambushed a stage coach carrying gold and had stolen the gold. The driver of the stage coach he had robbed was Charles McCarthy. After getting the gold, he had later spared the driver’s life. Later, Black Jack migrated to England and changed his identity to John Turner. He thought that his problem was over after he had changed his identity and left Victoria. Unfortunately, he met Charles McCarthy who recognised him, knew about his past and blackmailed him. Henceforth, he had no peace because Charles continued to demand for money. He threatened to reveal his identity if Turner refused to give in to his demands. Unable to withstand it any longer, he killed Charles. After committing the crime, he became very ill. Seven months later, Turner died. His crime had continued to haunt him until he died.

A Journey to the Centre of the Earth The main theme in the story A Journey to the Centre of the Earth is determination brings success. This theme is reflected in the character Professor Lidenbrock. When Professor Lidenbrock, Axel and Hans ran out of water, he was not discouraged. He was determined to find water to enable the team to carry on the expedition. When the storm carried them back to the shore they had started from, he insisted that they sail back to where they had started from. When the trio decided to follow the way Arne Saknussemm took and their way was blocked by a big rock, they blew it up. The explosion caused them to be thrown out as the volcano erupted.
