WORKSHOP PRACTICEOne of the things I wanted to talk you all through is how to read actively. This part of the semester seemed like a good time for that.

I also found myself making one similar comment on several papers: “you can avoid some of the awkward language here by reading this aloud.”

So we’re going to combine activities today. We’re going to read one of the essays from CCM aloud, and as we go, we’re going to do some critical workshop style reflection.

OPEN TO…

Sustainable Energy, on page 115 (the actual essay starts at the bottom).

We’re going to read. I want some of you to read, but I know some people hate being called on for that, so if you want to protect your classmates and you enjoy reading, volunteer. :) I will call on people if I am left with no other choice.

As we read, I want you to take notes related to the questions on the next slide.

THINGS TO CONSIDER1) How clear is the author’s position?2) How well is the position supported with

evidence?3) What sorts of evidence are used?4) How reliable is the evidence? Do the sources

seem credible? Is the logic sound?5) Is the support diverse? Does the author lean too

heavily on one source?6) Where are the potential holes in the argument?7) As Devil’s Advocate, what would you ask of the

author? 8) What would make this effort stronger?9) What isn’t said/written?

BASED ON THAT…

I’d like all of you to tell me what you want to do for your workshop next class. Bear in mind that I know you’re early in your process.

Talk to me about what would be most useful for you. I’m going to take notes in a Word document.

IF YOU REMEMBER…Several meetings ago I had you read an article about the bad ways that people use sources.

Today, we’re going to revisit that and talk about it.

Since a number of you missed class on Thursday and thwarted my expert attempt to make you work in small groups to explain a reading, we’re going to try again.

On the next slide, I’ve identified the types of problems the author identified. We need that many groups. Then, of course, each group gets a problem.

IF WE HAVE TIME…While going over the Scavenger Hunt, we talked a bit about this. There’s a congressional race in Maine wherein the Democrat, Colleen Lachowicz, is an avid World of Warcraft player. This has been made a central part of her opponent’s campaign against her.

MY QUESTIONS TO YOU1) Is this a good argument against

Colleen?2) What does one need to know to

interpret the information?3) How reliable does the website seem?4) What questions does it leave you to

ask?5) What appeals does it make?6) What impact does it actually have?

HOMEWORKTumblr question: We are now past the mid-point of the semester. So, in classic Joey from Friends style, “how you doin?” Tell me in your 140some odd characters.Tumblr prompt: By this point you should have done quite a bit of research for your project. I want you to post a proper citation for what you feel is one of your best references then write a few paragraphs explaining why that reference is quality. Remember your training, young Jedi. Use the language we’ve used in class.

Next class: we workshop!
