The Truckee River basin is a closed system terminating at Pyramid Lake (sacred to Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe)

COMMUNITY VISION: A ‘LIVING’ RIVER

Achieve flood protection goals through a combination of set-back levees, floodwalls, river terracing, bridge replacements, floodplain land acquisitions, instream and riparian restoration, and urban parkways.

Partnered with local, state, federal agencies and non-profits to implement restoration program

Invested $6.9M to help restore lower Truckee River

Benefits include: flood attenuation, decreased risk of developed property damage (floodplain preservation), streambank stability, sediment retention (water quality improvement)

Restored about 8 miles of the river and created over 450 acres of habitat in/along the river

TRFMA RESTORATION EFFORTS

Ecosystem restoration is one of the Corps’ primary missions (authority via Sections 206, 1135, 204) TRFMA applied for cost-share credit per Section 113 for early-construction restoration projects (like

Section 104) Restoration elements were removed from the Corps project and are not included in the authorized

NED plan Completed restoration elements remain in the local plan; currently no new projects are planned

RESTORATION AND THE CORPS

TRFMA negotiating with Corps to characterize the completed restoration projects as environmental pre-mitigation for Flood Project

Cost-share credit unlikely but would satisfy requirements of Corps and permitting agencies for mitigating downstream impacts of Flood Project

Status: In-progress as part of the Vista Narrows project and Section 1036 review
