DesigningSuccessful designers rely on more than imagination and physics alone. Inventions must be cheap to manufacture. Ideas must be clearly communicated to teammates. And it would be nice if the customer can actually use the product.
These are essential guidelines I try to follow when choosing design solutions.

Fluoro-transparent Rib Retractor
Problem: Metal rib spreaders are opaque under fluoroscopy, blocking visibility during Transapical Heart Valve surgery.
My solution: Replace metal ends with fluoro-transparent polycarbonate ends, to reduce size of blind spot. Dr. Vinayak Bapat praised the plastic blades after testing them during an animal study.
Removable ends
Ribbing added for stiffness

Class Competition
Build a robot that can collect the most balls under 1 minute.
My team created a machine capable of scoring 6 balls.

SCORE POINTS
2011Teams had 8 weeks to construct their robots using only given materials.
Controlled using 4 switches
In order to reach weekly milestones, my team chose to co-designed all components.
Natcar CompetitionTeams aim to build an autonomous RC car that completes the wire track faster than opponents.
Used solenoids to follow the wire.
Each rear wheel is driven by its own motor, to provide better control around turns.
Motor torques amplified through gear boxes.
A sinusoidal current runs through the track.

Gearbox components
- Gears were purchased, and press-fit onto steel shafts.
-Structure was machined out of aluminum
-Support plate and beams hold gear boxes in place
Eagle Scout Project
Six simple benches, which are easy to move around.
Organized the construction of seven benches, and donated them to the Irvine Animal Care Center.
