SLUDGESludge refers to the residual, semi-solidmaterial left from industrial wastewater, orsewagetreatment processes. It can also refer to the settled suspension obtainedfrom conventional drinking water treatment,[1] and numerous other industrialprocesses.

Characteristic Wastes1. Ignitability - Ignitable wastes can create fires under certain

conditions, are spontaneously combustible, or have a flash pointless than 60 C (140 F). Examples include waste oils and usedsolvents.

    2. Corrosivity - Corrosive wastes are acids or bases (pH less than orequal to 2, or greater than or equal to 12.5) that are capable ofcorroding metal containers, such as storage tanks, drums, andbarrels. Battery acid is an example.

    3. Reactivity - Reactive wastes are unstable under "normal"conditions. They can cause explosions, toxic fumes, gases, or vapors

when heated, compressed, or mixed with water. Examples includelithium-sulfur batteries and explosives.

    4. Toxicity - Toxic wastes are harmful or fatal when ingested orabsorbed (e.g., containing mercury, lead, etc.). When toxic wastesare land disposed, contaminated liquid may leach from the waste and

    pollute ground water.

    POLLUTION

  • 8/4/2019 Engineering Environment

    20/24

POLLUTIONIs the introduction of contaminants into a natural environment that causes instability, disorder, harm or discomfort to theecosystem i.e. physical systems or livingorganisms.[1] Pollution can take the form ofchemical substances or energy, such asnoise, heat, or light.

HEAT POLLUTIONis a term used to describe the release of heat into the environment by human activities.[1] Bycontrast, global warming is thought to be the result of the increase in greenhousegases (CO2 emissions).

[2] Experts on the climate have debated the broader subject of global warming aswell as its potential constituents. These include heat pollution, the greenhouse effect, and solar variation.

NOISE POLLUTIONis excessive, displeasing human, animal or machine-createdenvironmentalnoise that disrupts the activity or balance of human or animal life. Thewordnoisecomes from the Latin word nauseas, meaning seasickness.

LIGHT NOISEAny adverse effect of artificial light including sky glow, glare, light trespass, lightclutter, decreased visibility at night, and energy waste.[1]

School PrayerGod, our Father,Creator of all good thingsin the world and within our school community:

We thank you for the gift of this day,for our families and friendsand for this safe place to learn and grow.

We ask You to bless all who teach and learn.

Through Your Holy Spirit, guide us as we grow in faith and loveand give us the courageto be more like Your Son.

We ask this, in Jesus' name.

    Amen.~~~~~~
