INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, MADRAS

Indian Institute of Technology Madras is one among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education, basic and applied research. In 1956, the German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959.

The Institute was formally inaugurated in 1959 by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. The IIT system has sixteen Institutes of Technology. COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, GUINDY

CEG was established in May of 1794, as a School of Survey with one student in a building near Fort St. George. Founded by Michael Topping, the school became the Civil Engineering School in 1858. Subsequently, CEG was established as a college in 1859 under the Madras University. It was then rechristened as College of Engineering in 1861 with the inclusion of the Mechanical Engineering course.

Loyola College

Loyola College, a Catholic Minority Institution, was founded by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1925, with the primary objective of providing University Education in a Christian atmosphere for deserving students irrespective of caste and creed. It started functioning in July 1925 with just 75 students on the rolls in three undergraduate courses of Mathematics, History and Economics.

Madras Christian College (MCC) began its life as a School founded in 1837 by Rev. John Anderson, a missionary from Scotland. The School became a College in 1865 during Dr William Millers dynamic stewardship of the institution. In 1937, a hundred years after founding, the College gave up its growingly strident and congested city centre establishment in Georgetown for a sprawling 365 acres spread in suburban Tambaram.

The Government General Hospital, one of the premier Institutions in the country was started on 16th November 1664 as a small Hospital to treat the sick soldiers of the East India Company. It was the untiring inspired efforts of Sir Edward Winter who was the agent of the company that materialized in the first British Hospital at Madras.In its early days the Hospital was housed at the Fort St. George and in the next 25 years grew into a formal medical facility. Governor Sir. Elihy Yale was instrumental in the development of the Hospital and gave it a new premises within the Fort in 1690.
