News and Views with a throughput of up to 21 ma/hr, will come on-stream in August. The plant will consist of an Enviro-X28 membrane filtration system, in combination with centrifuge and ion exchange units. The four stage treatment process will remove solids and dispersed oil, then emulsified oils and micro solids, followed by soluble hydrocarbons, detergents and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and finally heavy metals. Energy saving solar desalination To make desalination more affordable for rural communities, UK environmental engineering concern, Dulas, is using water hydraulics to reduce the energy demand by almost 65%. The reverse osmosis module developed, known as the 'Village Scale, Water Desalination unit', was produced with the help of a UK Government Overseas Development Agency (ODA) grant of £70 000. It was designed as the pilot study for a scheme to provide an on-island sustainable source of drinking water for Eriteria's barren Dalek Islands, in the Red Sea off the Northern coast of Ethiopia. The machine produces over 3 m 3 of drinking water a day -- enough for between 150 and 300 people using between 10 and 20 1 per day -- and operates unsupervised using solar energy as the power source. Sea water is pumped into the unit at 60 bar by a simple plunger water pump. It travels though three osmosis tubes which filter the salt from between 10% and 40% of the water. The remaining salt-enriched water, now at approximately 58 bar, is discharged back into the sea. Before it reaches the sea, the water passes through a Nessie water hydraulic motor, supplied by Danfoss, which provides between 50% and 70% of the power required for the pump at the beginning of the sequence. The remainder of the power is provided by sun-following solar panels. "This is vital since the solar electric panels, which provide the power are exceptionally expensive," explained Dulas director and research engineer, Bill Langley. "Our aim was to produce a machine that was very energy efficient and required the minimum of maintenance and supervision. At this scale, using water hydraulics to recycle the energy has several advantages over using turbines, particularly in terms of cost-efficiency and availability. The units are comparatively small and light, and, once installed, they can simply be left in place -- there is nothing to go wrong." Singapore R&D site for Kurita Kurita Water Industries is to set up an R & D centre for water-treatment systems and a design unit to develop ultra pure water systems in Singapore, reports the Nikkei Weekly. Investment in the centre is estimated to be $1.8-2.7 million. The move is aimed at offering improved service to Asia-based customers. Although demand for water-treatment is rising in the region, especially from large steel and chemical plants, customers are demanding lower prices and quicker delivery. Memtec and Gelman Sciences unite Memtec Ltd and Gelman Science Inc have signed an agreement to merge the two companies. The transaction is expected to be formalised by the end of this year. They predict that the transaction will add approximately US$114 million to annual sales. The two organisations believe that the combination of Memtec's worldwide purification and separation interests with Gelman's microfiltration and membrane business will create a company with prospects for strong growth.
