1. ORGANISATION & FUNCTION

1.11 INTRODUCTION

Energy Management Centre, Kerala is an organisation registered under the

Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Act of 1955 with Reg.No:

139/96. The Centre came into existence on 07-02-1996 . The office of the organisation

is at T.C.20/1441, Poojappura-Karamana Road , Thiruvananthapuram .

The Centre is an autonomous body under the Department of Power , Government

of Kerala, devoted to the improvement of energy efficiency in the State , promotion of

energy conservation and encouraging development of technologies related to energy

through research, training, demonstration programmes and awareness creation . The

centre is networking with institutions within and outside the State for research and

training .

This report for 1996-97 highlights the various activities of the Energy

Management Centre, Kerala in the areas of energy conservation ,workshops/training

programmes, demonstration and awareness programmes in the energy sector. The report

also gives a picture of the administrative and financial activities of the Centre . During the

period under report, four meetings of the Executive Committee (19.05.97, 06.09.97,

18.11.97, 11.03.98) and two meetings of the Governing Body (08.08.97, 01.12.97) were

held.

1.12 OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the Centre are to facilitate efficient management of all forms of

energy, to promote energy efficiency and energy conservation and to develop new sources

of energy as well as novel energy technologies with a view to increasing production,

improving the quality of life and facilitating the use of energy on a sustainable basis .

In particular the objects are :

1. To develop innovative methodologies and techniques and devise programmes for

efficient energy management .

2. To identify barriers to improving energy efficiency and propose appropriate remedial

approaches including policy measures and financial incentives .

3. To carry out , support and/or promote research studies on energy management .

4. To advise various sectors of economy like industry, transport and agriculture etc., the

agencies connected with energy production, handling and utilisation and the

Government on issues related to all forms of energy and its efficient management .

5. To monitor and promote energy conservation activities in the State of Kerala .

6. To increase the skill and capability of energy professionals .

7. To act as a nodal agency for generation, collection and dissemination of latest

technical information on energy management and improve the energy information

system .

8. To create and maintain a database on supply, demand and prices of energy, energy

efficiency, energy conservation and related technologies .

9. To review laws and regulations that have a bearing on energy efficiency, develop

standards and norms for efficient energy use in the various sectors of economy in the

State and propose modifications .

10. To liaise with national & international organisations, Universities, Research Centres,

Regulatory bodies, funding agencies and such other institutions connected with

various aspects of energy management , including exchange of research results and

energy statistics on energy policy, forecasting and planning techniques .

11. To facilitate exchange of energy experts between the state of Kerala and other regions

within India and abroad .

12. To perform such other functions as desired by the Government and undertake such

other activities as are relevant to fulfil the objects of the Centre .

2. EMC COMPUTER FACILITY

2.1 Strengthening of the existing Computer Network

The Centre strengthened its computer network during the year 1997-98 by adding latest

computer systems with Pentium 166/200 MHz MMX technology hardware, 600x600 dpi

flat bed Scanner, Laser Printer, Colour Ink jet Printer, and 33.6 Kbps Data/Fax/Voice

modem. The Centre also acquired E-Mail and Internet Connectivity.

The Internet services like E-mail, WWW Browsing, FTP and Telnet etc. were started as

soon as the Centre obtained the connection from VSNL during May 1997.

in a central location and thus provide

better management and control.

The network did not face any major problems during the year under report. By using

appropriate security methods, virus attacks were prevented on the network. EMC never

faced a virus attack or System Crash.

2.3 Services Provided

♦ Provided support for the following programmes:

• “International Training workshop on Small Hydro Power”. Was responsible

for documentation and gave necessary Software and Hardware support for

the Resource Persons, Participants and Officers of EMC. Designed and

maintained a database containing all relevant information of each

participant.

• “Training Programme for Engineering College Students”. Provided

software and hardware support for the programme.

• “1000 Energy Clinics for Women”. Provided necessary software and

hardware support.

♦ Design, layout and publishing support for “Oorja Vartha”.

♦ Downloaded software from internet for applications like Virus Control, Networking,

System utilities and energy conservation. By this, EMC saved around Rs. 25,000 to

30,000 on software.

♦ Located web sites and downloaded latest technology information related to Energy,

Environment and Sustainable development. These information are found to be very

useful for EMC’s activities.

♦ Given training to staff members of EMC to use productivity tools like MS-Office, E-

mail, World Wide Web browsers and to collect information from the internet.

2.4 Projects Completed

2.4.1 Successfully designed, developed and implemented a software package for the

analysis of data collected as part of Rural Energy Survey Project covering

Peralassery, Methala and Nagaroor Grama Panchayats.

The database used for the survey consists of the following items:

• 16 Tables

• 315 Types of Information Collected

⇒ Information of 1485 Houses

⇒ Information of 7080 residents

⇒ 1299 information related to Agriculture in those areas

⇒ 1195 information related to Animals belonging to those areas

⇒ 1462 information related to Cooking in those areas

⇒ 1456 information related to food habits of people in those area

⇒ 1458 information related to Fuel consumption

⇒ 1455 information related to Land usage/ownership

⇒ 1463 information related to the usage of Electricity and Electrical Appliances

⇒ 1460 information related to water sources, availability and usage

The software is capable of generating Statistical information based on the

data collected. More than 72 types of very useful information for the

project were generated from the data. This was again available on

Panchayat basis also. A Comparative statement was also generated using

the software.

14 types of reports containing various information on the data collected

was also generated. This comes around 280 pages of Information.

The project was completed successfully and based on results got from the

system, the implementation of the Rural Energy Survey Project was

successfully completed.

This database management software helped to speed up the entire process.

This software is designed to accommodate the data from the whole state of

Kerala.

2.4.2 EMC Library Information System

EMC - LIS is an information system which automates the library

management functions of the Centre. This software is capable of

performing all the functions of the library by an organised and controlled

method. It was developed by project students from Trivandrum

Engineering College under the supervision and guidance of EMC officials.

EMC proposes to upgrade the software by incorporating Bar code

scanner and more functional modules.

2.4.3. Developed a software package for Mailing List application of EMC

This software has following modules:

Primary Data Creation - Categories, Groups etc.

Addition/Modification and Removal of Mailing list Members

Label Printing

In addition to mailing addresses, database can accommodate information like

telephone numbers, fax numbers, E-mail addresses, company information, type of

activities etc.

The mailing labels can be printed category wise or for multiple categories.

This software is running satisfactorily.

2.4.4 EMC-Payroll

This generates the monthly pay statements and pay slips. This has been under

use since May 1997.

2.5 Other Services

2.5.1 Internet on EMC Network

Using the Centre’s existing single dial up TCP/IP connection and a proxy server,

intenet access is established throughout EMC network One of the Windows 95

network client workstation was converted to a proxy server and through that

machine, all other terminals can access internet services without any need of

additional modems, telephone lines, internet account and expensive leased line.

Currently, the VSNL node at Trivandrum provides only 9.6 Kbps connectivity,

sharing the connection among all users affects the data transfer. The data transfer

can be improved by installing a 64 Kbps leased line in the future.

By implementing this new technology, EMC became the first organisation in

public sector in Kerala to provide internet access to all officers using a single

internet TCP/IP dial-up account, without any additional cost. [EMC has been

using this technology since May 1997.]

2.5.2 Ongoing/Future Plans/Projects

♦ Designing and Building a Web Site for EMC-Kerala.

♦ Design, Develop and Maintain a database on Energy.

This is proposed to be started as soon as the Oracle 8 Workgroup Server and

Developer 2000 are installed.

3. ENERGY LABORATORY

3.1 Laboratory Facilities

Much attention was paid during the year for procuring various instruments for

essential activities of the Centre. Various instruments purchased are as follows.

3.1.1. Portable Load Management System

Make & Model : Krykard - ALM 3

It will provide all the important electrical energy measurements needed for energy

conservation and auditing such as voltage , Amp., p.f , KW , KVA, KVAr, Hz ,

KVArh , Peak KVA , Peak KW etc. It is capable of providing automatic print-

outs during unattended observations. The instrument is having additional facility

for connection to any standard IBM PC using optical converter, converting optic

signals ,for on-line load management.

3.1.2. Hand held Load Analysers

Make & Model : Krykard - Nanovip (1000/1 & 200/1)

It is very compact and capable of measuring electrical energy parameters like

V, A, pf, KW, KVA , KVAr ,Hz etc.

3.1.3. Datalogger

Make : Interlogger

The device has got the following capabilities ,

i) Trends in voltage , Amp., KVAR , KW , KVA and pf for three phases and

one neutral are displayed .

ii) Waveforms and harmonic activity for both voltage and current can be

presented on a P C.

iii) 8 channel programmable.

3.1.4. Auto LCR - Q Tester

Make & Model : Systronics - 928

It eliminates the balancing of a universal bridge and range selection of a digital

L-C-R meter.

Additional capabilities

i) Auto computing and auto ranging

ii) Measures R , L , C and Q (Quality Factor) with high accuracy.

3.1.5. Harmonic Analyser

Make and Model : Fluke - 41 B

It measures rms, peak and total harmonic distortion for complex voltages and

currents with no manual calculation . It displays harmonic levels in three modes -

waveform , bar graph and numeric values. Data storage facility is available upto 8

complete measurement sets. Isolated serial interface for communication with

printer or DOS/WINDOWS capable computer is also available. From a simple

single phase measurement it automatically calculates 3 phase power for a balanced

load .

3.1.6. Powerscope

Make and Model: Systronics - 522

It is a unique oscilloscope specially designed for making measurements in the field

of floating and high voltage areas of electical , electronics and power engg. This

instrument overcomes the limitations of measuring powerline signals encountered

with conventional oscilloscope.

Its main application is the display of interference and harmonic distortion on

power lines affecting reliability and safety.

3.1.7. Digital Multimeter

Make & Model : Fluke - 76

It is a digital multimeter capable of

i) True - rms ac/dc voltage measurements from 400 mV to 600 V

ii) ac/ dc current measurements from 4 mA to 10A.

iii) Capacitance measurements ranges from 99.99 nF - 9999 µF

It is ideal for measuring distorted wave forms.

3.1.8. Heat flux Meter

Make & Model : Heat Probe ; HB - 100

It is used for the heat flux masurement of a thermal surface, having a range of

0 - 2000 W/m2 .

3.1.9. Digital Handheld Thermometer

Make & Model : Fluke 51

This instrument is having the facillity for accurate measurement of temperature,

equipped with a K- type thermo couple.

3.1.10. Non-contact Tachometer

Make & Model : Beltronix - 4007

Portable digital tachometer for non-contact measurement of rpm with a maximum

range of 99990 rpm. 2 m of reflecting tape has been procured as an additional

accessory.

3.1.11. Digital Energy Meters

Make : Unilec

i) Single phase energy meter - 230 V, 5-20 A , Class 1.0 (Nos. - 3)

ii) Three phase energy meter - 415 V , 10-20 A , Class 1.0

These meters will measure the total energy consumption with sufficient accuracy.

3.1.12. Bomb Calorimeter

Make & Model : Arico - Deluxe

It is used for the determination of calorific value of liquid and solid fuels.

3.1.13. Digital Lux Meter

Model - LX -101

Measures the intensity of light (lux) ; having a range of 0 to 50000 lux

3.1.14. Microwave Oven

Make & Model : BPL - 900T

Used for the study of energy working efficiency in as well as for demonstration

purposes.

3.1.15. Oscilloscope

Make & Model : Philips - OS 5020 P

Primarily used for the study of wave forms in connection with our R&D activities.

We also have procured many other misc. instruments like voltmeters , Ammeters,

Watt meters, Multimeters etc. for field work..

4. LIBRARY

To realise its objectives of increasing the skill & capability of energy professionals

through training, workshops and seminars; acting as a nodal agency for improving the

energy information system and to advise various sectors of economy like agriculture,

transport, industry, etc. and the government on issues related to energy management, the

Centre has strengthened its library with the addition of more than 200 books and 20

technical journals/newsletters/magazines in 1997-’98.

As on 31 March ‘98, EMC has 494 books in the following subject categories.

A list of journals/newsletters at EMC library is enclosed.

As the number of books and library members are on the rise, an efficient way of keeping

track of the books and to help in providing easy search of required books on wanted

subjects, was necessary. The solution obviously was to computerise the entire process

and efforts were put to develop and install a Library Management Software. A Graduate

Engineer was given an opportunity to study and develop this software as one of his

projects.

A large number of technical books, periodicals, journals (including international

publications) etc., has been identified for purchase in the next financial year. For selection

of the books and to ensure proper functioning and development of the library and to

streamline the entire process, the Centre had created a Library Committee with Dr. P.S.

Chandramohanan Nair, Head (R & D) as its Chairman.

5. R & D PROGRAMMES

5.1 Energy Efficiency Improvement in Brick and Tile Industries

Introduction:

Energy Management Center in its pursuit for improving energy efficiency in the State,

decided to look into certain small and medium industries like brick and tile , tea industries

etc. The brick and tile industry’s kiln technology which is more than a century old is a

heavy draw on our limited biomass resources. The Centre on receiving an invitation from

a R&D group created by tile industrialists decided to study the possibility of energy

efficiency improvement in the brick and tile industries.

Project Details:

The Centre held discussions with th R&D group set up by the tile industrialists and

selected M/s Raja Tile factory at Karuvannur near Thrissur for the pilot project. The

factory has a semi automated plant with a capacity of 20,000 tiles per day output. The

team of experts from Energy Management Center along with engineers from CMS

computers R&D wing studied the temperature control and maintenance process in the

furnace over a period of 4 months. After several rounds of discussions between the

experts from the industry represented by their R&D group , experts from CMS computers

and experts from EMC, it was decided to make a Temperature Monitoring and Alarm

System for the Kiln. The Temperature monitoring system named TMAS was developed

jointly by the EMC and the R&D group of CMS computers . The TMAS was installed in

M/s Raja Tiles, Karuvannur as a part of the pilot project and was found to be working

perfectly.

Present Status:

The TMAS developed by EMC with the help of the R&D center of M/s CMS computers

was successfully installed at the pilot project site at a low cost and was found to be very

effective . It is estimated that there is a saving of around 30% on the fuel despite other

advantages like an increase in the number of I and II grade quality tiles in each lot.

Considering the savings on fuel alone, the investment on TMAS has a Pay Back Period

of just over 3 months. The Centre proposes to popularise the TMAS among the tile

industries and expects to have this installed in atleast 10 more similar industries in the

State.

5.2 Development of Thapabharani

As a part of R&D on energy saving devices, “Thapabharani” - a cost effective thermal

cooker has been successfully developed. Thapabharani is an ideal energy (cooking

energy) saving device which can save fuel and time - around 80% for cooking rice. Not

rice alone, pulses, bengal gram, green gram, tapioca etc. can also be cooked using

“Thapabharani”.

Thapabharani is designed on the heat transfer principles. It consists of highly insulating

material - expanded polystyrene- and a laminated, special type of container box.

Thapabharani can save 78% of firewood, 62% of Kerosene and 75% of LPG. It is simple

to use, light weight, cost-effective, energy efficient cooker. Also the design is in such a

way that with little training anybody can fabricate it and this offers employment

opportunities too. Owing to its advantages and energy saving potential,

Thapabharani is an ideal device to be popularised in rural areas of Kerala state.

EMC has seen to it that trained women groups are involved in fabricating it and in

propagating it in the villages, where savings in fuelwood and time, do matter.

5.3 Development of PC Based Energy Monitoring System for Factories

Production cost of any product has a direct bearing on the energy consumption of the

industry.But this aspect is often neglected by many industries who have set up the

infrastructure very early in the state when power tariff was too low. By following the

conventional methods, not only the production cost increases but also the power

consumption increases due to negligence. EMC has proposed for a PC based Energy

Monitoring System for factories to enable maximising the efficiency of energy use per

service and hence reduces power consumption.

The system consists of :

1. Solid State Energy Meter Modules (EMMs) with built-in Real Time Clock for

time and date informations.

2. Central Computer System (PC) for collecting data from various EMMs

periodically.

3. Application Software.

EMC has successfully developed such a system in collaboration with CMS Computers

Limited, Thiruvananthapuram.The Energy Monitoring System was demonstrated

satisfactorily at Cochin Shipyard Ltd.

The derived data is highly valuable for conducting energy management exercise in

reducing power consumption.

5.4 Design of Solid Fuel Stove

Solid Fuel Stove is a novel concept which is capable of providing complete combustion of

solid fuels with very high efficiency. Also the health problems posed by hazardous gases

emanating due to incomplete combustion can be avoided.

Preliminary studies on the topic is completed and the design is on progress at the EMC

Lab.

5.5 Efficiency improvement studies on Petti & Para

Petti and Para is a traditional dewatering system widely used in Kuttanad area. Petti and

Para is a special pump driven by a heavy electric motor and discharges water with high

flow rate, against low heads

Petti and Para is conventionally designed by the local blacksmiths. The pump is

connected to the motor using a long belt.

A preliminary study conducted revealed that Petti & Para runs most inefficiently with

heavy loss of power. Efforts are on to improve the efficiency of it and reduce power

consumption. With the solid technical support from EMC, an NGO in Kuttanad by name

STARS, has prepared a project, which is funded by the Science & Society Division of

DST, Govt. of India. Use of new materials and computer aided design for upgrading the

device contemplated by the Centre.

5.6 Survey on Energy Scenario

A survey on the potential of energy conservation in the state is conducted by the EMC to

prepare an electronic data base on the energy scenario of the Kerala state. It aims at

taking sample survey from all industrial sectors, domestic areas, commercial

establishments etc. A computer coded questionnaire was prepared and supplied to the

teams who were conducting the survey. One day training workshop was arranged for the

survey team to enable them conduct the survey smoothly with the questionnaire. The

survey team consists of 21 Engineering Degree/Diploma holders.

The data base will be useful for EMC’s consultancy and R & D activities in future and

also for the KSEB in its planning for expansion of the system.

5.7 Total Energy Study Project (TESP)

EMC is associating with the Total Energy Study Project of Energy Conservation Society

(ECS). TESP is a survey targetted to the industrial sector of Kerala to assess the

electrical and thermal energy requirements, to study the potential for cogeneration,

captive power generation, reuse/recycling of wastes etc.

EMC is providing the technical support for preparing suitable questionnaire, computer

facility for analysing the data collected and other similar facilities required. The Survey is

over in eight of the districts in the state.

6. CONSULTANCY PROGRAMMES

The Centre is involved in consultancy projects like environmental planning for thermal

power plants, energy efficiency improvement studies for large industries, utilities, public

buildings, etc. To strengthen the consultancy wing, the Centre has procured different

sophisticated instruments for on-site and off-site studies and analysis.

Following are the consultancy activities carried out during 1997-’98.

6.1 Design for Green belt development at Brahmapuram Diesel Power Plant

(BDPP) premises

Objective

To make a bio-aesthetic design of the landscape by incorporating trees, bushes and

ornamental herbs on the basis of their pollution tolerance capacity, canopy structure,

height, etc. and to prepare scheme for establishing a pollution biomonitoring facility.

Brief outline of the project

This project carried out for the Kerala State Electricity Board was conceived during early

1997. The total duration of the project was about 4 months and the total cost Rs 99,000.

Apart from the in-house expertise, Energy Management Centre utilised the services of

outside consultants for the effective conduct of this project.

A general field survey to analyse the topography, terrain and vegetation features was

conducted prior to the detailed study on the ecosystem and environmental impact which

resulted in the design of a landscape considering the aesthetic and engineering needs.

The program was also aimed at preparing a novel scheme for biomonitoring of air

pollution in thermal power plants by using sensitive species of plants.

Project status:

The detailed report was submitted to the Kerala State Electricity Board and they have

already initiated action from November 1997 for the phased implementation of

recommendations drawn in the report.

6.2 Energy efficiency improvement in Tea industry

The Centre in its pursuit for improving energy efficiency in the state decided to look into

the energy conservation potential of certain industries like tea, brick and tile etc. who

mainly use firewood as fuel. Kerala is one of the three states in the country expected to

have shortage of firewood in the next decade.

With this view, the Centre has taken up a study at one of the tea industries of Tata Tea

Limited at Munnar. A team of Engineers from the Centre visited the Peruvoran Tea

Factory during 25-26 April 1997 for a preliminary investigation to assess the energy

conservation potential.

The study identified immense potential for firewood savings in the plant and the

suggestions were discussed with the senior plant officials of their Research &

Development department. Also, a detailed report on the findings and recommendations

was forwarded.

Having found that lot of fire wood is being used in the labour colony for cooking and

heating the houses, possibility of fire wood savings were explored and included in a

separate report. The recommendations included design of a common facility for solar hot

water generation for room heating as well as cooking, etc. These when implemented

would save considerable amount of fire wood and thus avoid over exploitation of forest

resources by the labourers.

6.3 Energy efficiency study at Cochin Shipyard Limited

Objective

Identification of energy conservation opportunities in the Shipyard.


Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), a Government of India enterprise engaged in Ship

building and repairing, invited Energy Management Centre-Kerala to undertake an Energy

efficiency study in their facility to identify the energy conservation opportunities.

A number of field visits, surveys and measurements were carried out by the engineers of

the EMC with the assistance of CSL officials. A part of the field work was assigned to

one of the Chartered Engineers M/s Herberts Engineering, Alapuzha, who have wide

experience in energy audit. Engineers of the EMC frequently interacted with the CSL

officials to discuss the practical aspects of the identified Energy Conservation

Opportunities (ECOs) specific to CSL.

The study has identified more than 12 energy conservation opportunities (ECOs) in the

plant, which when implemented is expected to reduce the present energy consumption by

12%, equivalent to Rs 13 lakhs per annum with an one time investment of Rs 10 lakhs.

The total consultancy fee was Rs 1.60 lakhs.

Project status:

Detailed report has been submitted and the Shipyard has commenced action for

implementation of certain low cost measures.

6.4 Pre-feasibility investigation on incorporation of Environmental friendly Energy

efficient devices in the building complex of Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology &

Natural History (SACON), Coimbatore

Objective

Identification of avenues for improvement of energy efficiency in the SACON building

complex, coming up in Coimbatore.


Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology & Natural History (SACON), Coimbatore, is an

autonomous centre under the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India,

devoted to research in ornithology and natural history. With a temporary campus at

Coimbatore, SACON has started construction of a building complex to accommodate

their research laboratories, library, administration, hostels, canteen, stores, etc.

SACON invited EMC to conduct a preliminary investigation in their facility to identify

measures for improving energy efficiency. EMC carried out an initial survey of the

complex and came out with suggestions on how to incorporate Solar Water heating

system, Solar PV lighting modules and CFLs for street lighting & indoor illumination.

Project status:

A pre-feasibility report identifying an investment of about Rs. 10 lakhs has been

forwarded to SACON.

7. TRAINING, SEMINAR AND WORKSHOPS

The Centre has designed and organised a number of training programs, workshops,

seminars, brainstorming sessions etc. during 1997-’98 as a part of its efforts to increase

the skill and capability of energy professionals in the State. Experts from different fields

were invited to present technical papers and participate in the discussions.

A summary of the different training programs, workshops, seminars and brainstorming

sessions organised during 1997-’98 are as follows.

7.1 Energy audit for Engineering students

Program objective

To create awareness among Engineering students about the concept of Energy audit and

to train them to take up preliminary audits.

Brief outline of the program

A two day program was conducted at ER&DC, Amphi Theatre, Thiruvanathapuram on

30-31 August 1997 attended by over 30 Engineering students. Faculty included experts

from EMC, Integrated Rural Technology Centre (IRTC), Palakkad, Petroleum

Conservation Research Association, Chennai and College of Engineering, Trivandrum.

Program output

29 engineering students have come forward to undertake energy efficiency projects in

their area. Good response from almost all the Engineering colleges in the southern part of

the State.

7.2 Domestic energy conservation

Program objective

Energy conservation awareness program for women activists which would act as the

preliminary interaction session with them for launching of the ‘1000 energy clinics’

project of EMC.


An one day awareness creation program for women activists with the technical support

from Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA), Chennai was organised by

EMC at the British Council Library hall, Thiruvananthapuram on 29 September 1997.

This program was jointly organised with the Indian Society of Interdisciplinary Studies,

Thiruvananthapuram, (ISIS), British Council Library, Thiruvananthapuram and Kerala

Sastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP).

The training program was inaugurated by Sri. Paloli Muhammed Kutty, Hon’ble Minister

of Local Administration, Govt. of Kerala. and was well attended by over 35 women

activists representing various NGOs, local bodies and Government departments. Faculty

included experts from PCRA, Shramik Vidya Peeth, Thiruvananthapuram, College of

Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram apart from Engineers of EMC.

Program output

Deliberations at the seminar was helpful in evolving a methodology for the conduct of the

‘1000 Energy Clinics’ project of EMC.

7.3 Power quality improvement

Program objectives

To deliberate upon issues related to power quality improvement based on case studies in

the State EB system.


One of the Energy Services Companies (ESCOs) from Bangalore has conducted trial

measurement at a few distribution transformer locations to evaluate the scope &

economics for power quality improvement. Senior executives in the generation,

transmission, distribution and maintenance side of the Kerala State Electricity Board

(KSEB), Electrical Inspectorate, Central Power Research Institute, R&D Centres, etc,

participated in the discussions organised by EMC at the Mascot Hotel Conference hall,

Thiruvananthapuram on 9 October 1997, inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister of

Electricity, Govt. of Kerala.

Program output

Preliminary input to plan for a DSM strategy for the KSEB. KSEB officials has shown

keen interest in this activity.

7.4 Modern Control Techniques in Adjustable Speed Electric Drives

Program objectives

Lecture on Modern PWM Inverters and Control Techniques in Adjustable Speed

Electric Drives


This program was jointly organised with The Institution of Engineers (India) [IE(I)],

Kerala State Centre, IEEE Kerala Section, Computer Society of India, Trivandrum

Chapter and EMC, Kerala during 12-13 October 1997 at the Auditorium of The

Institution of Engineers (India), Kerala State Centre, Thiruvananthapuram. The talk was

delivered by Dr. Mohammed Jabbar, Dept. of Electrical Engg., Regional Engg. College,

Calicut. This program conducted for two evening sessions was attended by over 25

practising engineers and student members of IE(I).

Program output

Refreshing/improving the knowledge about adjustable speed drives for engineers. In

continuation to this program, EMC has planned a seminar on ‘Instrumentation and

Control to reduce energy costs’ to be conducted at Thrissur.

7.5 Instrumentation and Control for controlling Energy Costs

Program objectives

The training program on Instrumentation and Control system for controlling energy costs

is aimed at giving an insight into the latest technologies and development in

Instrumentation and Control which is increasingly important as we focus on energy

conservation and environmental protection.


The 2 day program conducted at Thrissur on 17-18 February 1998 has covered relevant

topics like Motors and motor drive systems, Transformers, Efficient boiler operation,

Steam system & heat recovery, Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, Compressed air system,

Power factor improvement, Demand control, tariffs & energy monitoring.

Faculty included experts from FACT Engineering & Design Organisation (FEDO), Kochi,

Central Power Research Institute, Thiruvanathapuram, Electrical Inspectorate and an

ESCO from Bangalore.

The following industries were represented in this training program: Apollo Tyres Ltd.,

7.6 Energy Saving Practices in Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Systems

Program objectives

This training program was aimed at giving a coverage of the latest technologies and

developments in Air conditioning & Refrigeration systems which consume more than

25% of power in an industry and contributes much to the production level of the firm by

delivering comfort level & catering to process requirement.


This 1 day program conducted at Cochin on 21 February 1998 has covered the following

areas: Modern trends in energy efficiency in Refrigeration & Air conditioning, Proper

equipment selection, Instrumentation & Control in R&A/C and Energy efficiency in

auxiliaries.

Faculty included experts from Vikhram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvanathapuram; TKM

College of Engineering, Kollam; an R&AC consultant at Kochi; Central Power Research

Institute, Thiruvanathapuram and a leading manufacturer of Air Conditioning systems.

The following industries were represented in this training program: Arya Vaidya Sala,

Kottakkal; Bharat Hotel, Ernaklulam; Ernakulam Dairy; FACT, Udyogamandal; Hotel

7.7 Energy audit for Engineering students

(similar to one organised for the southern part of the State)

Program objective

To create awareness among engineering students about the concept of Energy audit and

to train them to take up preliminary audits.


This two day program conducted at Kannur on 20-21 February 1998 was attended by

over 30 Engineering students. Faculty included experts from EMC, Integrated Rural

Technology Centre (IRTC), Palakkad and Petroleum Conservation Research

Association, Chennai.

Program output

Good response from the northern part of the State as well.

7.8 International training program for Energy Managers

Program objectives

To impart training for the Engineers in industries all over the State in two phases to equip

themselves as Energy Managers of their own industries.


The first phase of this program was conducted at the Mascot Hotel Auditorium,

Thiruvanathapuram from 4-6 March 1998 and has covered the energy management

principles & techniques in the mechanical and electrical system of industries, procedure

for energy audit, energy economics, etc. The second phase of this program would be

conducted during June ‘98. Participants will have to carry out atleast a preliminary

energy audit at their facility during the three month period intervening between two

phases.

Faculty included experts from UN-ESCAP, Bangkok; FEDO, Udyogamandal; Central

Power Research Institute, Thiruvanathapuram; IRTC, Palakkad; MK Raju Consultants,

Chennai, apart from the experts of EMC.

More than 35 participants from industries/educational institutions/ organsiations in the

State participated in this three-day programme. Participants include: ANERT,

7.9 Energy Conservation in Pumping Stations

Program objectives

To brush up a few fundementals of pump engineering and deal with standard

electrification practices and energy efficiency improvement for the benefit of Kerala Water

Authority Engineers.

This 1 day program organised by EMC jointly with Kerala Water Authority (KWA) and

Association of Public Health Engineers - Kerala, conducted at the Auditorium of Kerala

Science & Technology Museum, Thiruvanathapuram on 21 March 1998 has covered the

following areas: Efficient operation of centrifugal pumps, standard electrification

practices, Induction motors and power factor improvement. A demonstration of the

energy savings through power factor improvement by addition of shunt capacitors was

arranged at Jala Bhavan, Kerala Water Authority for the benefit of the participants.

Faculty included experts from Central Power Research Institute, Thiruvanathapuram,

Electrical Inspectorate and an ESCO from Bangalore.

More than 150 participants from the offices/pumping stations of Kerala Water Authority

all over the State participated in this one day programme.

Program output

Refreshing the knowledge about the mechanical and electrical aspects of water pumps for

the executives/engineers of KWA and trouble shooting of a few problems raised by the

field engineers.

8. SHP PROJECTS CO-ORDINATION

Energy Management Center in its search for finding a solution to the energy crisis in the

state by using environment friendly technologies took membership in the IN-SHP

(International Network on Small Hydro Power) with its head quarters at Hangzhou,

China. The Centre took up the job of initiating a new SHP development culture in the

State and decided to conduct an international workshop on Small Hydro Power

Development at Trivandrum. The centre was able to create an awareness of the immense

Small Hydro Power potential in the State and the techno-economic benefits of its

development among the decision makers, administrators, technocrats and general public

through various training programmes , seminars and a major public awareness campaign

through various news papers, All India Radio and visual media.

8.1 International Training Workshop on Small Hydro Power Development

The primary objective of the workshop was to enhance the knowledge of the

professionals working in the field of power on the vast potential of tapping the hydel

resources of the State, most efficiently with minimum damage to the

environment. The workshop was also intended to impart knowledge of the latest

techniques for the development of small, mini and micro hydel projects nationally and

internationally.

The Training Workshop on Small Hydro Power was organised by the Center at

Technopark, Trivandrum from 7 to 18 July 1997. The faculty for the training

workshop consisted of two experts, Prof. Zhu Qiang and Mr. Kong Changcai from

IN-SHP. Twelve Indian experts from MNES, IREDA, CWRDM, KSEB, EMC-K, Equipment

Manufacturers and Private Consultants with exposure at national and International levels

were also invited to be the faculty of the workshop.

The participants to the two week training workshop consisted of engineers from KSEB,

SILK, District Panchayaths, ANERT, Voluntary Organisations, IREDA , state nodal

agencies for renewable energy development, and from various IPPs and Consultants from

all over India. The training workshop consisted of tutorial sessions , case study

presentations , discussions and field visits.

8.2 India-China Cooperation Workshop

A workshop on India-China co-operation was conducted on 18 July 1997 at Technopark

jointly with IREDA, New Delhi. The workshop was inaugurated by the Worshipful

Mayor of Trivandrum Shri.V.Sivankutty. Ms. Li Wan Ming and Mr. Yao Chen,

Programme Officer from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation

(MOFTEC), China and

between China and India for SHP development. The IN-SHP offered all technical

assistance for the projects . Peoples Republic of China offered technical collaboration and

supply of equipment for the SHP projects, if required .

8.3 Visit to SHP Project Sites by Experts

For an on the spot assessment of SHP potential in the State, the IN-SHP experts visited

various SHP sites identified by the KSEB in the districts of Kozhikode, Idukki,

Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram. The IN-SHP team of experts was

assisted by senior engineers from the KSEB and EMC. The team visited, in particular,

various sites in Pamba and Chaliyar basins. The international experts expressed great

satisfaction on the proposed project sites and felt that the SHP potential in the state is

immense. They also expressed willingness on the part of the IN-SHP for executing pilot

projects in any of the sites in Kerala as a promotional venture. The experts from EMC

held several rounds of discussions with the Chinese experts and identified a list of 18

projects after talks with KSEB engineers, for which IN-SHP technical help may be

sought in the design and execution. A total potential of around 100MW was envisaged

for execution within 3 years. EMC with the approval of the State Govt. is holding

discussions with INSHP regarding the possibility of transferring cost effective design

technologies developed by them to the State.

8.4 Promotion of Participatory Development of SHP

Energy Management Center initiated Newspaper and Radio campaigns, highlighting

advantages of participatory development of multipurpose SHP schemes, having

environmental advantages as well. The Centre also produced 2 short TV programmes for

Doordarsan. These popularisation programmes helped to enhance the awareness among

the public and local bodies about the SHP projects and created an atmosphere conducive

for speedy SHP development in the State.

Energy Management Center was instrumental in formulating a proposal for transfer of

cost effective small,mini,micro hydro power project technologies from INSHP to Kerala

State. The Center is liaising with INSHP and KSEB for formulating a Memorandum Of

Understanding acceptable to both for triggering the development of small hydro power

projects in the State . As a part of these coordination efforts, two engineers from the

State EB and EMC were trained by INSHP in China, on the latest technologies in the

field of small hydro power equipments and their selection for SHP projects.

PRESENT STATUS

The proposed 18 projects are expected to contribute a total of 103 MW in Kozhikode

district with the co-operation of INSHP. Different local bodies have shown their interest

in getting into the field of Small Hydro Power . Electricity Board has formed a separate

division under a Chief engineer for the identification and implementation of Small Hydro

Projects. There is an awareness among the general public and technocrats about

multifaceted advantages of Small Hydro Power, which could catalyse the development of

the total SHP potential in Kerala, within a short period.

9. STATE ENERGY CONSERVATION AWARDS 1997

Introduction

As a part of its efforts to encourage energy conservation activities in the State, the

Government of Kerala had instituted Awards for Energy Conservation efforts since 1993.

Awards structure expanded

During 1997, through the newly constituted State Level Monitoring Committee for

Energy Conservation, with EMC as the implementing agency, [vide G.O (MS) No.

24/97/PD dated 11.06.1997], the Government decided to expand the activities eligible to

be considered for Awards. Accordingly, the following 10 categories of Awards were

declared to be instituted.

It was decided by the Government of Kerala that all activities connected with promotion

of Energy Conservation, including instituting Energy Conservation Awards in the State

should be brought under the Energy Management Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, in view of

its specific mandate to work in the area of energy conservation and management.

Criteria

The award for industries and transport organisations is based on their achievements in

energy conservation, while the local bodies would be evaluated based on the formulation

of policies & schemes and implementation of them. R&D Centres, Manufacturers &

Traders are assessed on their contribution to energy conservation and the criteria for

NGOs/Individuals and Journalists/Electronic media persons/Publishers/Writers are based

on their achievements in awareness creation related to energy conservation.

Awards for 1997

The announcements inviting applications and nominations for the Awards in the above 10

categories were widely publicised through both electronic and print media and through

direct letters to many institutions, individuals and agencies. 15 November 1997 was set as

the last date for receiving such entries.

Selection

The applications were processed by the Energy Management Centre and the State Level

Committee met thrice to assess the entries. A judging committee consisting of Er. P V

Varkey, Chief Electrical Inspector to Government, Prof P O J Lebba (former Principal of

TKM Engineering College) and Er. P C Rajan Babu was constituted to visit the

shortlisted industries and evaluate their performance, especially during the financial year

1996-’97. A committee consisting of Prof. V K Damodaran, Director, Energy

Management Centre and Er. P C Rajan Babu were to evaluate the performance of the

Research and Development Centres. The applications in other categories were

examined direct by the State Level Committee in its sittings. Based on the above

exercise, the Committee recommended to Government of Kerala to decide upon the

Awards for 1997 as follows:

The awards were conferred on the recommended industries, organisations and individuals

at a colourful function held at Mascot Hotel Conference Hall, Thiruvananthapuram on 14

December 1997, the National Energy Conservation Day. The awards were presented by

the Hon’ble Minister of Electricity & Cooperation Shri. Pinarayi Vijayan, at the

programme presided over by Prof. V.K. Damodaran, Director, Energy Management

Centre-Kerala. Shri. P.A. Sidhartha Menon, Member (Electrical), KSEB; Shri.N.T.Nair,

The Centre is confident that the success stories of these individuals and institutions will

prompt more vigorous energy conservation activities in the State in the years to come,

especially during these days of acute energy shortage, so as to help ameliorate the

difficulties encountered by the public in meeting their energy needs.

ORDER

The Government of India and the Government of Kerala have been

promoting energy conservation activities through Public Awareness Campaigns,

incentives for energy conservation through various fiscal measures and also by

recognising achievements, in the field of energy conservation by presenting State awards

to such industries. It was decided that all activities connected with promotion of Energy

Conservation, including instituting Energy Conservation Awards in the State should be

brought under the Energy Management Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, in view of its

specific mandate to work in the area of energy conservation and management.

In the circumstances Government are pleased to reconstitute the State

level committee, with the following members.

The term of Committee will be for a period of 3 years and the Committee

will be a class I committee for the purpose of T.A. and D.A.

All expenses in connection with the Energy Conservation Award Scheme

will be met out of regular grants to the Energy Management Centre. The duties of the

Committee will include recommendation on the number and nature of categories of

Awards, Award amount, modus of citation, qualification for entry, modus of invitation of

entries, modus of evaluation, modus of delivery of Awards, constitution of evaluation

committees, and other policy recommendations for encouraging energy conservation in

the State of Kerala.

10. RURAL ENERGY PROGRAMMES

10. 1 Energy Efficient Village Programme

Energy Efficient Village Programme is a demonstration project to make selected villages

of the State more energy efficient in the use of all forms of energy.Three Panchayats were

selected in three districts situated in the northern, middle, and southern parts of Kerala.

They are Peralassery in Kannur district, Methala in Thrissur district, and Nagaroor in

Thiruvananthapuram district. A Ward in each Panchayat is selected for the Project and

survey conducted to study the consumption pattern of energy and to evaluate the income

level of the people. Based on the following criteria, high income and low income groups

are classified.

Monthly income : Rs.3000

Property owned : 50 cents

Monthly energy consumption : 40 units

Those who fall above the criteria are categorised as High Income Group and others as

Low Income Group.Following energy efficient equipments were supplied to the entire

houses in the selected wards; CFL and ballast limited to electrified houses, kerosene

stove and smokeless chulahs depending on the fuel used for cooking.

Electronic ballast 1 no.

Thaapabharani 1 no.

Smokeless Chulah 1 no.

The equipments are supplied free of cost to the Low Income Group and at 30 % of the

actual cost to the High Income Group, ensuring thus the full participation of the entire

ward. The survey and distribution of equipments were done by volunteers in the

respective Panchayats. Training and demonstration were a part of the Project.

The comparison between the survey conducted before and after the supply of energy

efficient equipments and after will reveal the potential for energy savings. This can be a

guide line for formulating a model project for all the Panchayats in the State.

Also as a part of rural energy project, street light improvements using micro processor

based lighting control and supply of improved firewood chulahs to the noon feeding

centres in the selected Wards are also being implemented in all the three Panchayats.

10.2 CFL Campaign in Vallikkunnu Panchayat

Vallikkunnu Panchayat in Malappuram District, came with a novel programme of

involving all the nearly 5000 electrified houses in that Panchayat to have 3 CFLs of 11

watt to replace 60W incandescent bulbs. This could reduce considerable amount of

voltage drop during peak hours, release substantial quantity of installed capacity and Kwh

and offer pleasing light to the households. The centre involved in the technical planning,

selection of devices and offered a financial assistance of Rs.5 lakhs to this consumer

driven energy efficiency project. The Panchayat offers to the household a four level

subsidy scheme depending upon their financial capacity. The Panchayat has also plans to

propagate Thaapabharani in the Panchayat to reach all homes.

11. AWARENESS PROGRAMMES

11.1 Energy Conservation Clubs (ECC) in schools

Program objectives

To inculcate among school children, the habit of energy conservation through activities at

the energy conservation clubs set up in high schools all over the State.


Energy Conservation Clubs are set up in schools all over the State by the Centre, through

the efforts of the Energy Conservation Society, a NGO functioning in Kerala and the

Ministry of Power, Government of India. Clubs are formed in 246 schools in the State

each having not less than 50 members, against a targetted number of 200 schools.

Different activities are conducted in such clubs to create awareness among school

students. The Centre provides necessary technical and partial financial support to the

ECCs for conducting different activities like Dance, Drama, Painting, Clay modelling,

Elocution, Domestic energy surveys, etc., aimed at creating awareness among the public

utilising the services of its members and also educating the members on the need and

techniques of energy conservation.

A publication of the Centre titled ‘Oorja Samrakshanam - Ippol Thudangaam, Ivide

Thudangaam’ (Energy conservation - start now, start here) is made available free of cost

to all the club members by the Centre. The programs of energy conservation clubs are

linked up with the activities of the Science clubs for better outcome.

Program status

Soon, all the schools in Kerala would be having such clubs and the same would be

extended to the Colleges in the State as well.

11.2 Exhibition on energy efficient equipments organised at the TKM Expo,Kollam

The Centre participated in the one month long exhibition on energy efficient gadgets

‘TKM Expo’ organised by the TKM Engineering College at Kollam from 1

December 1997. Equipments like pressure cooker, CFLs, thermal box, high

efficiency kerosene stove, high efficiency wood stove, electronic ballast, etc. were

displayed in addition to many posters and photographs depicting the idea of energy

conservation.

Pamphlets on domestic energy conservation techniques in Malayalam and English were

prepared, printed and circulated from the exhibition counter of EMC. College students

who have shown interest to associate with the Centre as volunteers in its exhibition stall

for explaining the benefits of energy efficient items to the public were given a brief

training on energy efficiency. A few copies of the Centre’s publication ‘Oorja

Samrakshanam Ivide thudangaam, Ippol thudangaam’ were distributed to deserving and

more interested people. Special brochures were also distributed to the public.

After the Expo participation, the Centre received a large number of enquiries on

literature, technical assistance and lectures on energy conservation from a number of

people of South Kerala.

11.3 Awareness programmes in connection with Energy Conservation Day 1997

Program objectives

To create awareness of energy conservation among public, college & school students,

women, etc.


December 14 is observed as the National Energy Conservation Day. Energy Management

Centre-Kerala with a view to spreading the message of energy conservation through out

the State extended this as an one month programme starting 15 November and

culminating on the National Energy Conservation Day.

The following programs were organised in all the districts in the State with the active

cooperation and support of Electrical Inspectorate, Energy Conservation Clubs (ECCs),

Energy Conservation Society, Engineering Colleges, Kerala State Electricity Board and

NGOs.

• one hour lecture on energy conservation at Colleges

• quiz competition for housewives

• elocution competition for college students

• domestic energy survey engaging members of ECCs set up in Schools

200 schools participated in this awareness program. In addition to creating

awareness to residents of the locality, the program was also aimed at educating

about 1000 children who conducted the survey as 5-member groups.

• a public meeting where prizes for the winners of the above competitions were

distributed.

Banners with a slogan on energy conservation were prepared and circulated to

all the district level organising committees for display at main roads in a

conspicuous way. Also posters in large numbers were distributed to the

committees for display in all public places like transport bus stands, KSEB

paying counters, cinema ticket booths, Schools, etc.

In addition to the district level public functions, a State-level public function was

organised at the Mascot Hotel Conference Hall, Thiruvananthapuram on 14 December

1997, where Energy Conservation Awards ‘97 were distributed to the

industries/organisations by the Hon’ble Minister for Electricity and Co-operation. Also

awards to winners of the State level competitions organised by the Centre and Energy

Conservation Society, Kollam Chapter for ‘Kathaprasangam’ and Drama on the theme of

energy conservation were distributed.

11.4 Golden Jubilee Science Fair organised by the LMS High School, Amaravila

The Centre participated in this two day Science fair organised by the LMS High School,

Amaravila at their School campus on 14-15 Jan 1998, and displayed different energy

efficient gadgets in addition to many posters and photographs depicting the idea of energy

conservation.

Similar to the TKM Expo at Kollam, pamphlets on domestic energy conservation were

issued to the public. School students who have shown interest to associate with EMC as

volunteers were engaged to explain the benefits of energy efficient items to the public.

There was good response from the local public for this program.

11.5 Publications of EMC

11.5.1. An informative Booklet titled OORJA SAMRAKSHANAM ENTHU? ENTHINU?

ENGNE? in Malayalam.

Published in January 1997.

The booklet gives a lot of information on energy conservation principles and

energy management tips.

11.5.2.A very enlightening booklet titled OORJA SAMRAKSHANAM IPPOL

THUDANGAM IVIDE THUDANGAM in Malayalam.

Published the 2nd Revised Edition in July 1997.

The booklet gives much insight for energy conservation practices with special

reference to domestic applications.

11.5.3.EMC is publishing a monthly Technical News release OORJA VARTHA intended

for use by the media. Advanced topics on energy researches going on world wide

and interesting energy news available from inter-national Journal are edited in the

Oorjavartha in Malayalam. The news published in the monthly are free for the

press media to republish to give a wide awreness. Also it is reaching the leading

College and School Libraries, Research Institutions, Other energy related

Organisations for informations and to enable further research in the topics.

11.5.4.Pamphlets giving tips for energy conservation at domestic sectors( 2 Nos.)

12. 1000 ENERGY CLINICS FOR HOUSEWIVES

Project objectives

Awareness creation among housewives, through demonstration and training by means of

‘Energy clinics’ run by women volunteers in all the 1000 panchayats in the State, as

proposed at the previous meeting of the GB were initiated during the year under report.


70 women volunteers would be selected from all the 14 districts and trained in the first

stage, to demonstrate the energy efficient equipments like pressure cookers, CFLs,

‘Thapa Bharani’ (Thermal box), high efficiency kerosene stove, high efficiency wood

stove, etc. Such devices would be supplied to the volunteers as their demonstration kit.

Each volunteer will conduct a minimum of 15 clinics. During the year 13 volunteers were

trained. If the panchayats come forward for the conduct of further clinics, the same

demonstration kit could be used, engaging the same trained volunteers.

This project would be funded by the Energy Management Centre-Kerala, and Ministry of

Power, Govt. of India/Energy Management Centre, New Delhi. Co-operation of

Petroleum Conservation Research Association, Chennai and active participation of

village panchayats are ensured for the programme. Estimated project cost is Rs 4 lakhs.

Project status

A workshop was organised to discuss various issues involved in implementation of such

scheme with women activists from all over the State.

The identified energy efficient equipments were purchased for distribution to the trained

volunteers.

Through press release and contacts with NGOs like Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad and

various Women’s organisations, applications were invited for selecting volunteers.

Selected volunteers in the Southern districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam,

Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Alappuzha were trained on giving live demonstration of the

energy efficient devices, at the Energy Management Centre.

13. HRD PROGRAMMES FOR STAFF

As part of professional development in the field of Energy Management, EMC has

arranged various methods of programmes for its staff like participaton in International,

National and Statelevel Seminars, Workshops and Training programs. Energy experts

were also invited to the Centre to interact with the Officers. Further, the Technical

Officers were given assignments to take classes on different Energy related topics in

various centres. The following list gives a picture of programmes that was attended by the

Officers of the Centre.

13.1 International

1. On 2.1.98 Dr.S.Talma from South Africa visited the Centre, and interacted with

the staff and also delivered a lecture on Energy issues in South Africa.

2. Er.K.M.Dharesan Unnithan,Registrar participated in the one month long

International training workshop on Small Hydro Power Equipment at Hangzhou,

P.R.China.from 20th March 1998.

3. Er. Udayabhanu and Dr.P.S. Chandramohanan Nair,E.T.s participated in the

“International training course for Energy Managers” at Chennai during 28 & 29

November 97 (Phase I) and 28 & 29 January 1998 (Phase II).

4. Dr.P.S. Chandramohanan Nair, E.T. attended the International workshop on

“Power Generation, system planning and operation” at I.I.T, Delhi from 10.12.97

to 12.12.97.

5. Er.V. Ajith Prabhu participated in the International seminar on Energy

Conservation at Chennai during February 3 & 4 ‘98.

6. Energy Technologists participated in the seminar on “Energy Conservation

Experiences of Japan” organised by EMC & UNESCAP, Bangkok on 5.2.98 at

Thiruvananthapuram.

7. All the Energy Technologists participated in the two week long Training

Workshop from 7 to 18 July 1997on SHP with the support of HIC, China and

with the co-sponsorship of MNES, DST, IREDA and KSEB.

13.2 National

8. Mr. Girish Sant, an independent Energy Planning Expert visited the EMC on

invitation and interacted with the staff and delivered a lecture on Energy Planning

on 26 - 5 -97.

9. Er.K.M. Dharesan Unnithan and Er.C. Suresh, Energy Technologists participated

in a seminar on Energy Issues at the IMG on 29 & 30.05.97.

10. All the Energy Technologists participated in the Business meet on Small Hydro

Power Development, which was organised by IREDA on 17.07.97 at

Thiruvananthapuram.

11. Er.M. Udayabhanu, E.T, atteneded the Seminar on Problems of Harmonics at

REC, Calicut from 29.9.97 to 1.10.97.

12. Er. K.M. Dharesan Unnithan, participated in the seminar on “Energy Management

and Renewable Energy” at Kochi on 13 & 14 November 1997 organised by CII.

13. Er. R. Harikumar, E.T. attended the workshop on “Small Power Plants” organised

by CII at Chennai on 8.12.97.

14. Er.C. Suresh participated the seminar on Internet at IEEE, Hydrabad during 11 to

13 December 97
