Energize launches new crowdfunding opportunity!

Energize has launched a new innovative funding scheme for the benefit of those playing and involved in sport in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin. In association with Podium Partners, Energize want to help local young and disabled people to develop their potential and to be able to support clubs looking for new equipment or facilities. Energize offer the opportunity for the local community sports organisations and athletes to promote their campaign on the crowdfunding website, enabling them to raise funds by bringing their project to the attention of the wider public and businesses. Energize are now welcoming applications to register campaigns on the site from local athletes aged up to 25, disabled athletes of any age, or projects looking to help either of these two groups. The site will go live with all campaigns in January when it officially launches to the public. Working with a charity partner allows donations to be eligible for Gift Aid which increases the value of each donation by reclaiming the basic rate of tax on the donation at no extra cost. This could convert every £10 donated to as much as £12.50. Chris Child, Chief Executive of Energize says “It’s a great new initiative and we have already had a really positive response from people who want to register their campaigns on the site. We would like to have a wide variety of campaigns, from a wide range of sports, ready to go live on the site ready for the main public launch in January and would encourage people to apply to register now.” To apply now and for more information email [email protected] or call 07917 236619 / To apply to create a campaign please visit http://energizestw.podiumpartners.org/

Funding Roadshow Review Over 50 delegates took part in Energize’s Funding Roadshow on Tuesday 17th November, at the Whitehouse Hotel in Telford. Welcome speaker Steve Franks, Managing Director of Water Babies, revealed his tips for success during times of depleted resources; ‘be creative, innovative and enterprising’ and to ‘chase the vision not the investment’.

Eugene Minogue from Sport England presented how to make the case from a strategic point of view, including making best use of insight and information available. Journalist Carl Jones also held a workshop, sharing his years of experience working in the local press (Carl was business editor at the Shropshire Star for 18 years), how to think like a journalist and creating exciting news stories.

Chris Child and Joe Lockley from Energize asked the question; are you funding ready? Driving projects forward requires great skill and commitment – practical tips and frameworks were talked through with delegates. Helen White from Energize spoke about making your case from the bottom-up, particularly how to evidence and share life-changing outcomes which are of particular interest to funders. The Conference closed with an exciting announcement; a new crowd funding platform for Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, called Podium Partners. See previous page for further info!

Thursday 28th January 2016

University Centre Shrewsbury, 9am – 1pm.

£25pp including all workshops, refreshments and lunch

Energize would like to invite your organisation to hear about working with our local partners to improve the health of your workplace.

What could your business gain by investing in health and wellbeing?

Healthier staff have less sick days - the average number of sick days is 6.60 per year, at an average cost of £90 per day. By supporting the health and wellbeing of employees, studies have shown that staff perform better at work, are more motivated, have increased job satisfaction and are less likely to look for employment elsewhere.

Why should you attend?

• Take away practical examples– what do we know has increased workplace activity and what are the benefits?

• Create a business case for workplace health – Keynote speaker Professor John Buckley is a leading academic in the areas of exercise, sedentary behaviour and cardiovascular health

• Network with organisations who have workplace health offers for your organisation – within the County and beyond

• Take part in activities, including yoga and table tennis, and learn how to replicate them at your workplace

• Learn more about the University Centre Shrewsbury - take a tour of their

Closing date for Sport England Inspired Facility

bids Readers of this newsletter will know that the closing date for submission for the Sport England Inspired Facility Fund is 5pm on Monday 11th January and that the programme is then being paused by Sport England so that they can make sure any future facilities funding is fully integrated into, and supports, their new strategy and priorities. As the County Sports Partnership for Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Energize are able to provide unique insight and support to local applicants. We provide free of charge advice in terms of completing the online application, signposting to both local evidence of need and other complimentary funds where they exist. When we have been consulted early in the process by the relevant project lead and we think it is of high value, if requested we do also provide a letter of support. We are aware that there are a number of local projects preparing to make a submission to this round of the Inspired Facility Fund (as above) and in order that we can manage demand for the above services (and manage Christmas / New Year too) we request that projects contact us by Monday 4th December with their plans. We hope that by doing this we can continue to provide good quality advice and in a timely way to ensure as many local projects are successful as possible. If you would like further assistance in this way please contact [email protected]

Join in the Big Conversation with Shropshire Council

In a few years’ time, Shropshire Council will have less than one quarter of the money that now funds 150+ council services which means they’ll have to stop delivering some services and they need your help to tell them which are important to you, and what you can do to help and make the remaining resources they have, go further.

Since the early 1970’s Shropshire Council (via the former County Council) has been funding the provision and development of leisure facilities and services to enable communities to play sport and enjoy active recreation across the County. But the funding cuts of recent years and the likely reductions in future mean that these services are unlikely to remain in their current guise.

For example many community leisure facilities are now being handed back to schools to run if they wish and some community facilities are now being run by other community groups. You may think this is a good or a bad thing? Clearly, as much sport / recreation activity is provided by community groups and volunteers, there may be both threats to their ongoing provision and also opportunities to provide more and flourish as well as grow local community activity in future?

Energize are concerned about the cuts and we are actively engaging with Shropshire Council about how we think we can support in future. Now is your chance to join this conversation and say what you think.

Please turn the page for further info.

#GetYourKitOn Campaign The #GetYourKitOn campaign is led by the sports sector and supported by the Sport and Recreation Alliance which has been created to highlight the value of grassroots sport to the nation. It is widely expected that the Department of Culture, Media and Sport will, like many departments, receive cuts of up to 40% to their budget, cuts of this size would have a devastating impact upon the level of investment into grassroots sport. Yet recent polling, commissioned by the Alliance, shows that 79% of people feel the Government should do more to support grassroots sport, and 75% agree that grassroots sport should receive more funding from the Government. So this is why the Alliance, along with sports organisations across the country, is encouraging as many people as possible to #GetYourKitOn and tell George Osborne how much they value grassroots sport. As part of the campaign, supporters are being asked to visit www.GetYourKitOn.team and post a message directly to the Chancellor.

Take the Alliance sports club survey on volunteering and social inclusion The Sport and Recreation Alliance, in conjunction with Sheffield University and universities from nine other European countries, is conducting a survey of sports clubs in the UK as part of a European-wide survey on their role in promoting volunteering and social inclusion.

All information will be treated confidentially, is anonymous, and will only be used for scientific purposes. It will take participants just 15-20 minutes of their time and will help the Alliance continue its work in campaigning for sport. The link to the online survey can be found here.

Understanding changes in Sports Participation Focus On…Sport is a detailed report using data from the Taking Part Survey. This report focuses on how sports participation changes for an individual over time and some of the factors that influence this. Headline findings: • The overall number of people playing sport is fairly stable but

there can be dramatic changes to the amount and type of sport individuals take part in. People don't have a single sporting habit and like any consumer, their needs change over time.

• Some activities are better than others at retaining people who take part.

• Life events can influence the amount of sport played by adults. The scale and nature of these changes differs by life event. Children starting school, starting a new relationship and separation from a partner are most associated with people playing more sport. In contrast, moving house and children leaving home have a negative impact.

• The vast majority of adults who have recently taken up sport are not completely new to sport: they bring some kind of sporting experience or knowledge. Read more

Blog – QuidditchUK QuidditchUK have become the latest national governing body to become a member of the Sport & Recreation Alliance. They caught up with QuidditchUK President, Melanie Piper, to find out more. How would you describe the game of quidditch to the uninitiated? I’d describe quidditch as a mixed gender full-contact and fully inclusive sport. A mixture of rugby, dodgeball and handball, the sport also offers a real inclusivity to people no matter what their age, gender, fitness level or sporting background and an incredibly welcoming community. How popular has it become and what is the competition structure like? Quidditch was created in the US in 2005, and came over to the UK in 2011. From just a couple of teams, the sport has exploded, with over 32 teams in the country, as well as smaller interest in schools. If people want to get involved, the best place to go is our website www.quidditchuk.org. You will be able to find your nearest team and also all our upcoming events. Click here to read more

A slice of the Big Apple coming to a neighbourhood near you Some of England’s most unloved spaces will be transformed into Manhattan-style 'pocket parks' under plans unveiled today. Community groups supported by local authorities will be invited to apply for a slice of £1.5million funding, which could see up to 100 under-used sites turned into small parks for people to enjoy right in the middle of some of the country’s biggest towns and cities. Pocket parks were first created in New York in the 1960s as people increasingly looked for green spaces among the towering skyscrapers. The most famous example is the award-winning Paley Park in Manhattan, which includes a 20-foot high waterfall and an overhead canopy formed by locust trees. Proposals could include creating wildlife habitats, transforming run-down gardens or simply creating green oases in bustling neighbourhoods. Pocket parks are defined for this programme as a piece of land of up to 0.4 hectares, although many are around 0.02 hectares – the size of a tennis court. See the pockets parks application form and prospectus. Completed application forms should be sent to [email protected] by 5pm on 10 December 2015.

Changes to Gift Aid HMRC has recently published new model gift aid declarations for single and multiple donations. Charities will need to update the declarations they use to reflect the new requirement and ensure that declarations they receive continue to be valid. While the new model declarations and requirements are effective immediately, HMRC will continue to accept declarations using the old model until 5 April 2016, giving time for charities to update the declarations they use and run down any stocks of printed materials they may have. Charities should start planning now to update their online and printed statements, fundraising scripts and letters for oral declarations, and use up existing printed stock. NatWest CricketForce 2016 NatWest CricketForce is a nationwide initiative aimed at cricket clubs. The programme is designed to bring clubs and their local community closer together, and ensure they’re ready for the new season. In previous years, club projects have ranged from simple paint jobs, sight screen scrubbing, and renewed boundary fencing, to brand new changing rooms, function rooms, and even a new pavilion. NatWest CricketForce 2016 will take place on 1-3 April. In 2016, the ECB will focus on supporting clubs to engage those members who don’t usually get involved, and help clubs reach out to their local communities. We encourage clubs to be bold and approach new people and businesses in their local area for support. Whether that is in the form of equipment, materials, expertise or simply volunteer hours, every bit of support will help. This is your opportunity to help your club attract new members, get ready for the upcoming season and engage the local community to ensure a sustainable future. Click here for further info

Club Membership Insights 2015 is now live The Club Membership Insights 2015- England document has been produced in order to share the latest information and where relevant, their interpretation of what it means for your club, following the third annual Club Membership Census. Information was collected from clubs in England from June to October 2015, and resulted in a response rate of 85%.

Further CASC updates and guidance - The new social membership condition and its impact As many clubs are aware the potential impact of the new participation criterion is possibly the most difficult aspect of the new scheme for our sport. The new condition means that clubs must have at least 50% of their membership ‘participating’ on the requisite number of days per year. Those members who do not participate for the requisite number of days a year are classed as social members. A club with more than 50% social membership will be in breach of the scheme.
