RE: World Mission Sunday Special Collection (October 22-23)

Dear Brothers,

As you know, the World Mission Sunday special collection is scheduled for the

penultimate Sunday of October, and will be collected at all Sunday Masses on

October 22nd and 23rd. Below I attach the text of my letter in support of this

collection. This letter will appear in the Globe’s October 20 edition. Please take a

moment to remind your parishioners of the upcoming collection, through either a

bulletin announcement or a mention among the announcements at the end of

Mass, or a similar way.

May our Lord Jesus Christ bless and make fruitful your work in His ministry, with

paschal joy and devotion.

28 September 2016

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On Sunday, October 23rd, the Church will mark the 90th annual World Mission Sunday. This day is meant as “the feast of universal solidarity” in sharing our faith with our neighbors and with the whole world. It is a special day of prayer and support for the evangelizing mission of the Church, proclaiming Christ’s great mercy everywhere in the world. Each year on this day, we are reminded to pray and work for conversion of hearts and the building up of the Church wherever she is not yet well established or the mercy of Christ is most in need.

The face of the Church reflects the generous mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ. In his message for this year’s celebration, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, wrote, “When mercy encounters a person, it brings deep joy to the Father’s heart; for from the beginning the Father has lovingly turned towards the most vulnerable, because his greatness and power are revealed precisely in his capacity to identify with the young, the marginalized and the oppressed.... Mercy finds its most noble and complete expression in the Incarnate Word. Jesus reveals the face of the Father who is rich in mercy; he ‘speaks of [mercy] and explains it by the use of comparisons and parables, but above all he himself makes it incarnate and personifies it’ (John Paul II, Dives in Misericordia, 2). When we welcome and follow Jesus by means of the Gospel and sacraments, we can, with the help of the Holy Spirit, become merciful as our heavenly Father is merciful; we can learn to love as he loves us and make of our lives a free gift, a sign of his goodness (cf. Misericordiae Vultus, 3). The Church, in the midst of humanity, is first of all the community that lives by the mercy of Christ: she senses his gaze and feels he has chosen her with his merciful love.” Each of us, in our daily life, is called to open our hearts to the saving love and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to share what we receive from Him with those around us. By letting ourselves be loved, we learn to love; and by loving in every circumstance, we live the mission of the Church.

Your prayers and generosity in this collection will support the needs of the Church in places where she is persecuted, or just beginning to take root. These funds are used to build parishes and schools, hospitals and seminaries, and to support religious life, in new dioceses and wherever the Church is most in need of resources to support the mission. On this World Mission Sunday, I ask that you all pray diligently for the Church throughout the world. I encourage you to be generous in your donations to the World Mission collection. May the Lord “bless the work of our hands… and make us a holy people, sacred to Himself, if we keep all His commandments and walk only in His ways” (Dt 28:8-9).

Your brother in Christ,

Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless Bishop of Sioux City

Re: Ministry 2025 Meeting

On September 15 the Pastoral Planning Committee held a meeting and processed the feedback that we have gathered on the draft plan of Ministry 2025. While long and comprehensive, the meeting produced good fruit. We incorporated the feedback into a revision of the map of proposed clusters. After all of the consultation I feel we have a much stronger plan and are prepared to move forward. It is now time to share the final draft of Ministry 2025 and talk about the timeline in order to move forward. To that end, we will be hosting a pastoral planning meeting for all priests and deacons, including those that are retired.

Ministry 2025 Clergy Meeting Monday October 17, 2016 Saint Mary’s Parish Center

Storm Lake, IA 10:00am to 3:00pm

I understand that for many of you Monday is your day off. Due to scheduling difficulties we could not find another date that would work for several more months which necessitated the selection of October 17. I hope it might be possible for some to switch their day off that week in order to attend. This will be our final meeting before we start to move into the parish cluster phase of pastoral planning.

Please RSVP by October 10th to Jean Mollet at [email protected] or 712-233-7548

Memo

To: All Priests

From: Fr. Shane Deman, Vocation Director

Seminarian Poster

Parish Bulletin Count Greetings from the Vocation Office! National Vocations Awareness Week is right around the corner, Nov. 6-12, 2016. Our office will be delivering the Seminarian posters and brochures approximately two weeks before that so you can insert the brochures into your bulletins. More on that will be released in the near future.

Our goal with this memo is to get a count of how many bulletins your parish prints so we can have one brochure per bulletin. This way we can count and prepare the packages of brochures and posters to be delivered. The posters and brochures will be available in Spanish as well.

You can send the count of each English and Spanish to Michelle Steinbach [email protected], or phone to (712) 233-7523. If you are the pastor of more than one parish please send the amount for each parish. Thank you in advance for helping us prepare to introduce our seminarians to the people of our diocese.

Re: The Order of Celebrating Matrimony, 2nd Edition

As you are aware, the new Order of Celebrating Matrimony, Second Edition has been released.

The newly translated ritual can be used in the celebration of Matrimony as of September 8, 2016.

It is obligatory to begin using this ritual as of December 30, 2016, the Feast of the Holy Family

of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. At that time it is no longer licit to use the previous version. I ask that

you plan accordingly.

While the second edition remains mostly the same, except in regards to the translation of the text,

there are a few things to note.

In the celebration of marriage, the Penitential Act is omitted and the Gloria in excelsis is

sung or said according the rubric of the Roman Missal, Ritual Masses, V. For the

Celebration of Marriage.

In the 2nd

edition, there is a new acclamation added after the Reception of Consent. Once

the priest receives the consent of the couple, finishing with the words, “so that what God

joins together, no one may put asunder” the priest invites those present by saying, “Let us

bless the Lord” and the people reply, “Thanks be to God.” This is a new element and will

need to be introduced to the people. This can be done at the rehearsal and/or by including

it in the worship aid or program. This acclamation is similar to what happens at

ordination when the candidate is called forth.

Included in the new ritual is the optional rites of arras and the lazo or veil. These rituals

come from many of the Hispanic cultures present in our country. The ritual text for these

two things can be found in the book along with the rubrics as to how they are carried out.

If you have any questions about this, you can contact my office.

At the recent presbyteral council meeting the question was raised as to the place of the

unity candle or other symbols. The USCCB notes that while the arras and lazo are now

included as approved cultural options to be used in the ritual, no other cultural elements

are mentioned. “Unity candles” or “unity sand” are more commercial in nature and not

part of the Catholic Order for Celebrating Matrimony.

As you have an opportunity to look at and study the new text please let me know if you have

further questions prior to mandatory implementation on December 30, 2016.
