Implementation/Adoption
! “We need to be clearer in our minds whether a particular change agentry action (such as a teaching event) is meant to serve primarily the functions of making people aware of SRV, of arousing interest in SRV and building up some knowledge of it, or whether the action is meant to achieve implementation.”
! “ . . . most of our training so far may have been focused too much on people learning SRV, but not enough on how they are to implement it.”

History of EFE
2011-12 Endeavour for Excellence
! Based on perceived success at The Muiriosa Foundation
! Involvement prescribed by Genio as a result of concerns about capacity to deliver on grant-funded projects
! Seven organisations across Ireland participated – two organisations as a team
! Consultative model – training and support provided locally
! 2011- 12 - Lessons Learned
• There is an added value to bringing organisations together as a community of practice network
• It is imperative to actively involve senior management
• It is helpful to offer complimentary training events designed specifically for relevant stakeholders – people, families, staff
• There is a need for material reflecting the Irish context and more relevant to mental health & dementia sectors
• It is necessary to develop Irish leadership
History of EFE
2012-13 Endeavour for Excellence
! Two groups (Group A in Dublin; Group B in Athlone), each with eight organisations that received Genio grant funding
! Curriculum consisted of four, one-week sessions with mentoring visits and phone consultations in between sessions
! Identified leaders completed course with Group A and served as mentors to Group B; met as a group
! Senior managers participated in specified days of the training
! Supported individuals, families and staff invited to specified days of the training
2012 - 13 - Lessons Learned
! Non-programmatic issues serve as the primary barrier to the delivery of high quality services
! We needed a better way to ‘train’ people being supported and families
! Participants found the training extremely relevant and helpful
! The appetite for this kind of training multiplied across Ireland
History of EFE
2013-14 ‘Enabling Excellence’
! Taking to scale: opened up to committed organisations that could meet the participation requirements
! Two groups: Dublin and Limerick; 46 organizations
! Organisations appointed an internal SSDL Practice Leader
! Curriculum consisted of 4, four-day sessions with Practice Leaders participating in a fifth day following each session
! Paul Doherty’s involvement added value in terms of organizational development
History of EFE

Necessary Conditions
for High Quality
SSDL Practice
Necessary Conditions
! The work is part of a larger effort toward organisational change rather than a once-off or isolated ‘project’
Necessary Conditions
! The vision and strategic plan for expanding the scope of SSDL services within the organisation is clear and coherent and is communicated to all stakeholders
Necessary Conditions
! Staff across the organisation become oriented in SSDL and this “new way of working” and understand the impact the change will have on them
Necessary Conditions
! Commitments to support people in new individualised ways are only offered if an assurance that the effort can be sustained over the long term can also be offered
Necessary Conditions
! Initial investments of time are allocated for learning the work and getting to know the person being supported
Necessary Conditions
! The personnel engaged in the work are well-fitted for their roles in terms of commitment, competencies, connection, creativity and character
Necessary Conditions
! Financial resources are available to invest in the design and development of new, unique support configurations on behalf of named individuals (i.e., individual budgets)
Necessary Conditions
! A fundamentally different, more equitable and balanced, partnership exists between people providing support and people being supported
Necessary Conditions
! Job descriptions reflect the nature of the new professional role and the relevant tasks required to do the work well
Necessary Conditions
! People being supported are involved in the selection of their paid supporters
Necessary Conditions
! Clinical supports are available to people on an as-needed basis as an adjunct to lifestyle supports
Necessary Conditions
! The authority for decisions related to people being supported are made by the person, their family, and the supporters closest to service delivery
Necessary Conditions
! People are assisted by robust teams comprised of paid and unpaid supporters
Necessary Conditions
! The assessment of risk reflects methods and formats that are normative and empowering and that focus on relevant safeguards that support the person’s desired lifestyle choices
Necessary Conditions
! Practical and procedural systems of accountability are built into service delivery mechanism; the review of action is given sufficient address
Necessary Conditions
! Flexibility is a critical element in the support design
Necessary Conditions
! Managers protect new ways of working from internal sabotage and undoing
Necessary Conditions
! The supporting organisation relies on iterative reflective critique to deepen learning and continually improve practice

The cook, the bottler washer and the cake.
The story so far…..
What I have to give……..
Sometimes it came out wrong…
Sometimes we made it worse….
What rights???...................
The Recipe……..
“I didn’t want to even talk about it at first…
I didn’t want to think about it….”
The ingredients……..
! “I had a very bad experience before when I lived in the community”
Effective Communication!!
The method………
The HOW.
The WHAT.
The WHO (not the rock group!)
The HOW……..
! Only talk about what a good life should be.
! No specific time frame – but true to the Discovery strategy.
! Partnership.
! Modelling behaviour and real life.
! The pace was flexible and reactive.
! Listen, observe, adapt and reflect.
The WHAT………
Facts:
! The failure of the previous experience was the services failure: reflection and recognition.
! Mary could do much more than she and other people believed she could.
A message for our sponsors………
The WHO………..
! ….has the power and control.
! …can stop anytime they want to.
! ….can prove others wrong.
! ….can design their own plans.
! ….needs permission to determine their life?
Then what happened……….
“ I got braver …………..
Thinking I can do it instead of I can’t”.
……….and then…….
! Achieved ever increasing goals.
! After 3 years we started to talk about a new home.
! The relationships changed: Adult to adult.
! Modelling behaviour – role playing, practicing, self advocacy, reflecting.
! What listening is; sounding board, good idea session, “listening with your heart”.(John O’Brien) Detail, detail, detail……..
The proof of the pudding……
The pudding……………
More pudding…………
Her Dream Her Reality
Yum yum……………..
Please sir can I have some more……
“I picked my house and signed my own lease”.
“I designed my own home”
“I interviewed my own staff”.
“ I design my support plan”.
“I’ve been to USA, London, Vienna, Holland, Lake Garda………..”
The icing on the cake………..
! The right people
! The right place
! The right reputation
Tomorrows menu….
! “ Grand Designs…….”
! “ My retirement and my community”
! “Canada here I come…….”
! “A car!!”
In a nut shell………
! “ I told you I didn’t want to do it because I think I must have been afraid.”
! The mistakes of the past showed us the worst but inspired us to imagine the best and make it happen.
! The pace, the priorities and the directions were planned with rather than for – we all had to learn new skills for that one!
