At Yorkshire we are constantly striving todevelop jointing solutions that meet thechanging needs of specifiers and installers alike. The Endex suite of end feed fittings comprises anumber of product ranges which suit a broadspectrum of applications across the domesticand commercial sectors.
The principle of the Endex jointThe Endex joint is created through the process ofcapillary attraction. When the fitting and tube areassembled and heated to the correct temperature, solder applied to the mouth of the fitting becomesmolten. Capillary attraction ensures the solder isdrawn into the gap between tube and fitting, forming a sturdy and reliable joint.
Advantages of EndexEndex end feed fittings are a simple and cost-effective method of jointing copper tubes to BS EN 1057. Light and neat, they make handlingand installation easy. The fittings’ compactdimensions make them the ideal choice for use inareas where there is limited space. Additionally, their smooth lines minimise flow restrictions andare unobtrusive on exposed pipelines.
Endex end feed fittings are manufactured fromcopper, gunmetal or other dezincification resistantalloy (DZR).
Users of Endex fittings can be confident that theyare purchasing an established product with aproven reputation for reliability and quality.
Presenting the rangeThe Endex end feed fittings range includes standardline fittings, large size and waste fittings, and anextensive selection of flanges and accessories.

Allow the joint to cool without disturbance.Clean the joint generally, wiping off any externalflux residues. This will prevent unsightly stains or(in extreme cases) corrosion of pipework. Flush outthe pipework.
Apply solder to the mouth of the fitting. Whenthe correct temperature has been reached thesolder will flow freely and be drawn into the joint.Briefly reapply the blowtorch and wipe off anyexcess solder.
Insert the tube into the fitting until it reachesthe tube stop, then wipe off any excess flux. Heatthe assembled joint evenly on all sides.
Remove any burrs from the inside and outside ofthe tube ends using a fine toothed file or a S120deburring tool from the XPress accessories range.
Clean the inside of the fitting socket and theoutside of the tube with a Yorkshire cleaning pad, fine sandpaper or steel wool.
Jointing – soft solderUsing a suitable brush, apply adequate – but
not excessive – flux to both the outside of thetube and the inside of the fitting socket. Do notuse your finger.
08
The following instructions illustrate just howeasy it is to make an Endex end feed joint. Thefittings use the principle of capillary attractionto allow solder to fill the gap between fittingand tube to form a completely reliable joint.
Endex general range fittingsThe reliability of soft soldered joints is greatlyinfluenced by the type of flux used. Yorkshire fluxand Traditional Craftsman's flux are speciallyformulated for jointing copper tubes with Endexend feed fittings. All fluxes are to some extent, corrosive, but special care should be taken with so-called self cleaning fluxes.
PreliminariesSelect the correct size of tube and fitting for thejob. Ensure that both are clean, in good conditionand free from damage and imperfections. If thetube is oval or damaged, use a re-rounding tool.
PreparationCut the tube square using a rotary tube cutter
wherever possible. If a hacksaw is used to cut thetube, a fine toothed blade should be used.

THREADED CONNECTORS
Jointing compounds shouldcomply with BS 6956 Part 5and be WRAS listed. PTFEtape for water and generalapplications should complywith BS 7786 and satisfythe requiements of BS 6920Part 1. For gas applications,PTFE tape should complywith BS EN 751-3 (formerlyBS 6974).
Female threaded connectorshave internal threads to BS EN ISO 228 and shouldbe used for generalconnections from malethreaded fittings to copperpipework.
Male threaded connectorshave taper male BSP threadsand may require the use ofjointing materials. Completethe soldering operation, then apply a WRAS listedjointing compound or PTFEtape to the threads. Wheninstalling fittings withparallel connector threads, agood quality jointing washershould be used.
HEATING DZR BRASS
The corrosion resistance ofDZR brass can be adverselyaffected by heating totemperatures in excess of400°C. Care should be takenwhen using hard solder toavoid over heating DZRcomponents.
UNION FITTINGS
Union fittings have metal-to-metal cone joints to BS 1010. Avoid damagingthe mating faces and, ifrequired, apply a WRASlisted jointing compound orPTFE tape. Tighten the jointwith a spanner.

Unmade endsIf one or more ends of an Endex fitting are toremain unmade, a short length of correctly sized, uncleaned tube should be inserted into the unjointed end. Keep this section cool bywrapping a wet rag around it while heating theremaining end.
Taking apart and remaking Endex jointsRemaking of Endex general range joints is generallynot recommended. However, in some situations, joints can be remade by fluxing the tinned portionof the tube and reinserting this into the fitting. Then, heat the joint and end feed the solder. If anew tube is to be used, clean and flux the tubebefore assembly.
If it is necessary to break into existing pipes forrepairs or to fit new branches, slip couplings ortees which have no tube stops make the job easierand avoid disturbing the rest of the system.
Adapting imperial to metric with EndexEndex general range fittings can be easilyconnected to older imperial sized tube installationsthrough the use of an Endex imperial to metricadaptor coupling. One end of the adaptor fits ontoimperial pipe and the other onto metric pipe.Adaptors are available in a variety of sizecombinations.
Brazing alloy (hard solder) installation –Endex general range and EndbrazeThe same preliminaries and preparation guidelinesapply as for soft soldering.
Blowtorches and their useFor brazing joints, an oxy-propane, oxy-acetyleneor other torch with a large soft, neutral or slightlyreducing flame should be used. This should be keptmoving throughout the making of the joint toavoid excessive local heating. It is better to meltthe alloy by conduction than by heating it directlywith the torch, although a combination of the twotechniques can be used to aid the flow of alloyinto the joint. The gap between the socket and thetube should be filled with the brazing alloy toleave a small, uniform bead of this alloy aroundthe mouth of the socket.
Jointing – brazing alloyFollow steps 1 and 2 (Jointing – soft solder) if theuse of a flux is required. Continue jointing as perthe instructions given here in points 3 to 5.
Apply the filler rod to the mouth of the fitting, allowing the brazing alloy to melt and flow intothe annular gap.
Allow the joint to cool without disturbance.Clean the joint generally and flush out thepipework.
Use of flux with brazing alloysRefer to Table 1 below for details of which fittingsand brazing alloys require the use of a flux. Whererequired, Yorkshire recommends Degussa H readymixed flux.
Heat the assembled joint evenly on all sides to700-750°C (red heat in poor daylight).

We recommend all systemsare thoroughly tested uponcompletion. In hydraulicbased installations thesystem may be tested to 1.5 times the workingpressure of the system (seetables on pages 6 and 7 fordata). If higher testpressures are requiredadvice should be soughtfrom Yorkshire Fittings.
On completion, compressedair pipeline systems must beproperly tested. The systemdesigner and installationcontractor must ensure safemethods are selected forsystem testing which willcomply with all currentHealth and Safetyregulations.
This may include testingcompressed air lines withfluids or compressed air at alimited pressure, or acombination. In any eventwe do not recommend themaximum working pressureof the product be exceededduring this procedure.
N.B. The maximumtemperature and pressurerange in any system isdictated by the componentwith the lowest performancerating.

recommends that such insulation products beinstalled with a moisture barrier, such asDensopaste or a plastic covering applied by thetube manufacturer.
If you need to add a barrier product, werecommend that all Endex fittings are fullyinstalled and are completely coated before theseare applied.
Thermal movementThermal movement is major consideration whendesigning and installing plumbing and heatingsystems and should be taken into account.
Pipework systems expand and contract with changesin temperature. If they are fixed too rigidly andtheir movement restricted the installation will besubject to stress. Stress concentrations between“fixed points” – typically found at radiators, valvesand other fittings – should be avoided whereverpossible.
Expansion of copper tubeCopper has a coefficient of linear expansion of 17 x 10-6/°C. For example, a 10 metre length ofcopper tube carrying hot water at 60°C will increasein length by almost 7mm when heated from 20°C.Assuming that temperature cycling of the system is20°C, there will be a continuous cycle of expansionand contraction of 3.4mm. Refer to Table 2.
Covered pipeworkMaking provision for thermal movement is vitalwhere pipework is installed under screed or plaster,or passes through brick or blockwork.
The preferred practice is to pass tubes and pipesthrough sleeves or conduits or to lay them in ductssurrounded by loose, non-rigid material such asvermiculite or glass wool. For further information, consult the standard BS 6700.
Pipework accessibilityIt's wise to take advice from the local waterauthority when it comes to pipework accessibility.
10
Here are details of some of the specific designconsiderations it is important to take account ofwhen designing and installing pipework systemscontaining Endex fittings.
Pipeline supportsPipelines should always be assembled so that thejoints are under neutral or compressive stress.Clipping to support the assembled pipeline isessential and tube manufacturer’s recommendationsshould be adhered to.
