Proverbs 11:13“A gossip betraysa confidence, buta trustworthyman keeps asecret”

The other daysomeone triedto engage me

in a gossip sessionbut God was withme and just thenanother coworkerwalked up and I leftthem to talk.

However, I did wondered why they wantedto share this negative information with me.So this is how this message came to life.

Have you ever wondered when con-versations are gossip and when they areacceptable conversations? The difference isin motive and accuracy. Ephesians 4:15says, “Instead, speaking the truth in love,we will in all things grow up into him whois the Head, that is, Christ.” Amen!

One struggle that people have is thatthey believe that “not gossiping” meansceasing to having any conversation aboutpeople and what’s going on in their lives. Most of us cannot do this and for good rea-son; people are a huge part of our lives. The good news here is that stopping allconversation about people is not what God

is asking us to do.You need to examine the accuracy of

the information as well as your motives intelling the story. Myself I am concernedaccuracy, if you are not sure about the truthof the story that should be enough to stopus from sharing it. If it is something thatyou were concerned about because some-one that we love is involved, you shouldproceed not by sharing the unverified story, but by going to the person in question andsharing our concern. “I heard this and Iwanted to make sure it was not true.”

For some people, though, the pre-sumption is that if the accuracy of the infor-mation is confirmed, then sharing it is notgossip. “I’m just telling the truth,” they’llsay. But there’s a second factor at play andthat is the motive we have in sharing thestory. Even if a story is verified to be true,if we are sharing it with the motive to hurtthe person, to taint their reputation, or justbecause we want to be the first to sharethe juicy news, our motive is bad.

Here is an example. Let’s say I have afriend named John who has told me he isgetting a divorce even though he’s onlybeen married 6 months because his wifehad an affair on him. Scenario #1: My heartis broken by his pain and by the knowledgethat I have that marriage is a sacredcovenant before God and therefore divorcepains Him. In my private prayer time, Ished some tears for John and his pain.

Later that day, I see Francine a mutualfriend of John and myself and I share thenews with her: “John shared with me thathe is going to be getting a divorce. If youget a chance to talk to him, I think he coulduse a shoulder to cry on.” Notice I did notshare the salacious but unnecessary detailsabout the affair. Notice also that I sharedaccurate information with a motive of help-ing John, not hurting him. Scenario #2:Having found out about John’s divorce, Iam quick to share every detail with every-one from our workplace that I can talk to.My facts are accurate, but my motive isimpure and my actions hurtful to John.

So, it’s important that we both be surethat our information is accurate and thatour motive is pure. Those two factors makeup the difference between gossip andappropriate conversation.

Have you ever thought about why dowe Gossip? I think it is because we love ourinsider status more than we love people.James 3:1-6 says,” Not many of you shouldpresume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach willbe judged more strictly. We all stumble inmany ways. If anyone is never at fault inwhat he says, he is a perfect man, able tokeep his whole body in check. When we putbits into the mouths of horses to makethem obey us, we can turn the whole ani-mal. Or take ships as an example. Althoughthey are so large and are driven by strong

winds, they are steered by a very small rud-der wherever the pilot wants to go.Likewise the tongue is a small part of thebody, but it makes great boasts. Considerwhat a great forest is set on fire by a smallspark. The tongue also is a fire, a world ofevil among the parts of the body. It cor-rupts the whole person, sets the wholecourse of his life on fire, and is itself set onfire by hell.“ Amen!

We seldom think about the implica-tions for the person we are gossipingabout. Our thoughts are usually on beingthe first one to spread the news so that wewill get credit for being “in-the-know” andothers to share their gossip with us whenthey have got some.

The simple but hard truth is that weare raising ourselves up by stomping othersdown. The simple but hard truth is that weare enhancing our own image without con-sideration that others must foot the bill. The simple but hard truth is that we arewilling to destroy others’ reputations andlives in order to improve our standing.

You may wonder why you shouldchange your words. Obviously, what youjust read about a moment ago hints at onegood reason. That is you should love peo-ple more than your insider status, but thereare other reasons that directly apply to us.If you would like to have the full message

“Love yourselfenough to lift

yourself”Ecclesiastes 12:1;12:2-8Luke 10:25-28 ITimothy 4:12

Ecc l e s i a s t e s12:1 tellsyoung people

to remember theircreator in the days

of their youth before the days of troublecome, and years draw near them. Lovingyourself rightly begins by loving your cre-ator. We must understand that there arelegitimate reasons for every person, espe-cially young people, to love God. First of all,we are made in His image and likeness; wecarry God’s name brand on our lives. If youthink Cross Colours, machine, Umen andGuess are the most sought after labels andname brands, you better think again. Forevery time you look into the mirror; everytime you express real love to another; everytime you think about the Higher power whomade you, you’re showing your designer’slabel to yourself and the world and ChristianYouth are the “Personal Property of thePrince of Peace.”

The second reason youth should loveGod is that we have in our creator – God afriend we can depend on. He’s a friend whoknows all about us and still loves andbefriends us. All of us have had friends to letus down. We’ve also had friends who fadedaway due to time and distance. But, God isa friend who sticks closer than a brother. Hecan never let us down and He cannot fadeaway no matter what the need, the prob-lem, the time or the place, you can dependon Him.

Next is that remembering your creatorin your youth makes God happy because itacknowledges His presence in our lives. Itrecognizes our creator – creature relation-ship between Him and us, and it reveals ourrespect and reverence for our maker.

In the fourth place, remembering Godin your youth inputs divine data into ourdatabase for future retrieval. Our God-creat-ed a brain that records everything that wesee, hear, say, taste, smell, feel and do.Therefore, as we remember God as youththrough worship, Sunday school, scripture, memorization, daily and nightly prayers.Singing in the choir, learning about Godthrough our families and so on. We are stor-ing vital survival information and inspirationto help us as we grow and mature.Remember that loving yourself rightlybegins by loving your creator.

It is my prayer that our youth will learnto love themselves enough to lift them-selves and others amidst seemingly hope-less times. My young friends, tough times

are coming. Listen to the Living Bible para-phrase “the down side” of life that facesevery youth. “It will be too late then to tryto remember (God), when the sun and lightand moon and stars are dim to your oldeyes and there is no silver lining left amongyour clouds. For there will come a timewhen your limbs will tremble with age, andyour strong legs will become weak. You willbe afraid of heights and of falling, a whitehair withered old man, dragging himselfalong; standing at death’s door.

I don’t want to alarm young people, nor do I want to depress them, but thewriter of Ecclesiastics who thought enoughof the younger generation in his day simplywanted to prepare the youth for what wouldcome. That scripture reading touched ongrowing old, missed opportunity increasedinsecurity, crime-ridden neighborhoods, cheapened values and pre-occupation withdeath. Even though that plagued theyounger generation of his day, those sametroubles afflict the now generation.

Speaking of the “now generation”, fromwhat do young people of today need to liftthemselves? First on the list. Especially forBlack youth is self-hatred and low self-esteem. One has but to compare and con-trast the songs and music of the 60’s tothose of the 90’s, and those of today. Lookat the R & B groups in the 1960’s. Most ofthem were named after the best—The FourTops, the Impressions, Junior Walker andthe All Stars. Stevie Wonder, and even Slyand the Family Stone. On the other hand, have you noticed some of the names ofmost popular groups today? Niggers with anAttitude, Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Geto Boysand Naughty by Nature. Dome of the sicksongs our children listen to repeatedly onradio are entitled, “Freak Me’, Six Feet Deep,Knockin Da Boots, “Cop Killers, X-tra Naked,Slow and Sexy, Nice N Wild, and Hard orSmooth. The music videos by young BlackAmerican artists are dominated by themesof death and violent sex. Young people loveyourself enough to lift yourselves from thegutter garbage.

Look at Luke 10:27 records a youngadult’s response to a young man seekingeternal life. The real meaning in life is foundin the fulfillment of the greatest command-ment “You shall love the Lord your God withall your heart, and all your soul, and with allyour strength and with your entire mind andyour neighbor as yourself. You see, lovingGod with one’s whole self lifts that person tolofty living. Young people there are no wayyou can love God with your feelings, spirit, energy and intellect and not rise above ourseemingly hopeless and sinful times inwhich we live. Loving yourself empowersyou to lift others as well as yourself.

Let us not forget to read our Bibles, andmay God bless you REAL GOOD and mayHe ever keep you in His loving care.

"The peace of

God, which sur-

passes all com-

prehension, shall

guard your

hearts and your

minds in Christ

Jesus"

(Philippians 4:7).

One of Satan's favorite tools is

to get you to question "What

if?" Dedicated Christians get

trapped into hoarding because they

fear the "what if" of retirement, dis-

ability, unemployment, or economic

collapse.

Obviously, God wants us to con-

sider these things and even plan for

them, within reason. But when fear

dictates to the point that giving to

God's work is hindered, foolish risks

are assumed and worry becomes the

norm, rather than the exception. Then

contentment is impossible.

Christians must consciously reject

this attitude of fear. To claim God's vic-

tory, it may be necessary for you to

face your fear. If your fear is a lack of

surplus, it may be necessary to live

without it in order to conquer that

fear. But remember above all else,

"My God shall supply all your needs

according to His riches in glory in

Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19).

Reject a Fearful Spirit

There is aportion ofthe model

prayer recordedin Matthew chap-ter 6, that shouldnever be omittedfrom any prayerwe utter and thatis, “Thy will bedone on earth asit is in heaven”.When that will isdone, peace andgood will and

other blessings naturally follow. Manyof our prayers are so out of line withthe will of God and what is best for ourown lives that this is the only way theycan be justified. Jesus himself, prayedin agony in the garden of Gethsemane, just before his crucifixion cried, “Ohmy Father, if thy be willing, remove thiscup from me, nevertheless, not my willbut, Thine be done” Luke 22:42. Andbecause he was willing to do thefather’s will we have redemption.

Dear Dr. Hollie,I loaned my sister $2000 so that shecould get her husbandout of jail and pay aretainer on a lawyer forhis case. I want mymoney back. It’s beenalmost a year. It wasn'tlike she never had anymoney. She just didn'thave all that she neededat the time, so she cameto me for the rest. Sincethen, I have repeatedlyasked for my money. She refuses to pay meback. She all of a sudden started bring-ing up old stuff that she had done forme in the past. And now this money issuddenly payment for things like pick-ing up my kids from school when I hadgotten tied up at work a few times;and loaning me her car while mine wasin the shop. I've been advised to takeher to small claims court, but my momthinks that would be wrong of me. Idon't want to upset my mother, but Iwant my sister to pay what she owes

me. It is the principle of the matternow, more so than wanting the money

because I think she isabsolutely wrong, and shealways gets away with notdoing the right thing and I'mtired of it. What do you think ofthis and what do you think Ishould do?Sister TroublesDear Sister,Since your mother is involved

in this already, that’s a greatthing. Ask her if she wouldarbitrate this matter; and ofcourse as the arbitrator, she

has the final word. So, ask her if she’llbring the two of you together, hearboth sides, and that all will be bindingby what she says. It should work outwell for each of you because after all,you said the money is not the drivingforce behind this. So if you’re notawarded the money, you’ll still be okay. "You defile themby saying the altar of the LORDDESERVES no respect. When you giveblind animals as sacrifices, isn't thatwrong? And isn't it wrong to offer ani-mals that are crippled and diseased? Trygiving gifts like that to your governor, and see how pleased he is!" I ask youdear reader “is the service and worshipthat you offer God your best? Hedeserve nothing less.Be blessed

Officials with Dallas Water Utilities pre-sented a certificate of appreciation toJennifer Stimpson, science faculty

with The Hockaday School, for her efforts tohelp citizens understand the benefits ofrecycling used cooking oil.Stimpson has taken her pas-sion to the classroom, incor-porating within her lecturesthe “how-to’s” of convertingused cooking oil into bio-fuel.

DWU and the DallasCounty Schools (DCS) are in apartnership to collect andrecycle used cooking oil intobio-diesel that helps poweralmost 1,000 county schoolbusses. The relatively easychemical process to convertused cooking oil into bio-diesel has helped DCS save morethan 150,000 gallons of dieselfuel at a savings of $330,000 so far thisschool year.

“We truly appreciate the efforts ofJennifer and her students to demonstratethe multiple benefits of our grease and oilrecycling program,” said Jody Puckett, direc-tor of Dallas Water Utilities. “Used cookingoil can be used to fuel school busses asopposed to being poured down the kitchendrain and possibly clogging indoor plumbingand city sewer pipes,” Puckett added.

As an educator, innovator and scientist,Jennifer brings a festive approach to learn-ing chemistry by blending style, intelligenceand key subject matter. Her self-designedprogram, “Get a ‘KIC’ out of Science: AnInnovative Strategy to Attract Students toChemistry,” demonstrates how science cur-

riculum should be applica-ble and meaningful fortoday’s youth. Her work hasgarnered numerous acco-lades including an appear-ance in O: The OprahMagazine and a grant fromthe Jordan FundamentalsSchools, Inc.

“Jennifer has pioneerededucational efforts gearedtoward awareness andimplementation of environ-mentally beneficial pro-grams,” said Larry Duncan,

President of the Dallas CountySchools Board of Trustees.

“Those efforts include improving efficienciesand reducing costs involving student trans-portation in Dallas County,” Duncan added.

“We are delighted that the City ofDallas is recognizing Jennifer for herefforts,” said Cathy Murphree, AssistantHead for Academic Affairs and Provost.“Her work demonstrates that students areactive, engaged learners and scientiststhemselves when the curriculum is relevantto their lives."

We’re inthe mid-dle of

track season, andlast week at theCarter Shoot outI was pleasantlysurprised. I sawthe RooseveltMustangs looklike the dominate

team that spoiled a lot of people for alot of years.

Coached by Bruce Davis, Davishimself is a big part of that storied his-tory of Roosevelt. Bruce attendedBaylor and played for the ClevelandBrowns. Mr. Davis is definitely quali-fied.

Roosevelt was once one of themost successful and proud 5A pro-grams in the country is now 3A. Butbeing a 3A school doesn’t diminish thepride that this inner-city school onBonneview exudes.

While watching track practice yes-terday I was joined by one ofRoosevelt’s favorite sons – Roy Martin.Roy, known by many as Robot, was anOlympian as a junior in 1984. At theState Track Meet in 1985, Roy ran thefastest 200M dash ever by a highschool athlete. The stadium clock hadhim at 19.75, and since he didn’t go toTexas, that time gets slower everyyear. I think it’s up to 20.1 or some-thing to that affect still a nationalrecord.

Davis and Martin are just a smallpart of the Star studded alums of ‘Velt, without using the rest of this articlenaming them all I’ll throw out a fewfor those of you that are not familiar.

John Jefferson( Green Bay, SanDiego), Jeff Fuller ( 49ers), RichmondWebb ( Miami Dolphins), and a littlecloser to home Kevin Williams ( DallasCowboys), Aaron Wallace ( Raiders).Thats about 10 Super Bowl rings.

Today’s Mustangs to name a fewToddrick Young, Avonta Shaw, andseniors Jason Holland and Xavier Hickson the anchor. That the 4x100 and 4x200meter relay team, those two relayswould be among the favorite if thestate championships were held today.I believe the Mustangs under Davisare laying a foundation to bring thisprogram back to where it was, whenRoosevelt would be the drawing cardeven when they had colleges there.

At the State track meet this yearin the 3A Division we should see afamiliar battle between Roosevelt andDallas Madison for theChampionships.

Madison brings some history withthem also. The Pitts boys Donovanand Tim, Byron Sweat, but that’sanother article for anther time.

On another front. A little birdietold me that one of DISD’s well knowncoaches took the buy out. If that littlebirdie is correct that would leave oneof DISD’s most popular programswithout a head football coach and ath-letic director.

Another note… Keep your eyeopen. If you think there are too manyschools in Oak Cliff, wait until nextyear when they re-open WilmaHutchins. It wouldn’t surprise me tosee some schools not have enoughboys to fill a football team. And we’restill trying to open buildings. Buildings

Zamora.

We asked President Zamora a fewquestions about Mountain View Collegeand what he attributes to its success.

President Zamora says that bring-ing together a representative group offaculty and staff to put a strategic planin place that mapped out a process forimproving the way the college interact-ed with the community. We had beendoing a good job, but we just needed tobe more responsive in order to meetour community where they are, whichin turn helped them find the resourcesthe college had to offer.

When asked how the county bondfunds enhanced the campus or the col-lege’s affects on the community inwhich it serves, President Zamora toldus that the bond funds enabled them toadd an additional 120,000 square feetto the college which increased space by33%. “More importantly, we added anew student services building in orderto better accommodate a growing stu-dent body, a new science building tohouse updated science labs and tech-nology, and a new nursing educationlaboratory so that we could add anAssociate in Applied Science (AAS)Degree in Nursing. We added a new

economic and workforce developmentbuilding so that we could help localcompanies address training needs with-in the community. In that same build-ing, we are evolving an entrepreneur-ship college which will infuse our com-munity into looking at a small businessas a real alternative to working forsomeone else. We also built a 2,000seat sports facility that will accommo-date soccer and football games.”

The new Economic Workforce,Business Incubation andEntrepreneurial College is a veryimpressive part of Mountain ViewCollege, and since it is new, we wantedto know what the outlook is for the col-lege. He told us that they intend tosupport local and small businesses byproviding opportunities to start andbuild their business. “We hope to pro-vide an ever increasing array of busi-ness development opportunities,” saidPresident Zamora.

For students who want to move onto four year institutions, Mountain Viewhas partnered with UNT Dallas, withUTA Arlington and other major universi-ties in the Metroplex.

We asked President Zamora to tellus a little bit about the high school with-in the Mountain View College environ-ment. He said, “The high school isnamed the Trinidad ‘Trini’ Garza EarlyCollege High School. In only its fifthacademic year (2010 – 2011), the EarlyCollege High School (ECHS) currentlyserves 400 students and has become amodel for academic success with otherECHS around the nation. The school israted ‘Exemplary’ by the TexasEducation Agency, ECHS not only pre-pares students for college, but immers-es them in college-level courses and theculture of a college. MVC ECHS gradu-ates leave high school with a highschool diploma as well as an Associate’sdegree, or credit hours transferable to afour-year university of their choosing.”

And lastly, President Zamorashared with us special facts and statis-tics regarding the college’s accomplish-ments. He was happy to share with usthat Mountain View has another recordhigh enrollment. Current enrollment forspring 2011 is 8,718 students with 60%

of the students returning from the fallof 2010 to spring of 2011.“The economic work force is what weare focusing on out here. We are thelargest feeder to the University of NorthTexas at Dallas,” said President Felix A.Zamora. “We are 7,000 strong and stillgrowing. We are getting attention fordoing great things in the Southern sec-tor. We are in the process of a hugecampaign to complete college, part ofPresident Obama’s initiative to growmore small businesses.” PresidentZamora also states, “We want to takethe students that come to us and buildthe pipeline for even better things; wewant to create a larger funnel.”
