TheSchoolofBusinessatEmporiaStateUniversityisanenergeticbusinessschoolwithcommittedfacultyandstaff,strongstudents,qualityacademicprograms,andastate-of-the-artfacility.AlthoughtheSchoolcelebratedits25-yearbirthdayin2008,ESUstartedofferingbusinessclasses141yearsago. Inspring2009,anoff-campusMBAprogramwasstartedinOverlandPark,Kansas.Thoughoffcampus,thecurriculumandfacultyforthisprogramareidenticaltotheprogramofferedonthemaincampus.Theprogramhasbeenarecentfocusofattentionwitheffortstopromoteandadvertisethecurrentprogrammoreextensively. ansasStateNormal(KSN)Schoolbeganofferingbookkeepingclassestoschoolteachersasearlyas1868.Sincethen,thestudyofbusinesshasbeenintricatelylinkedwithhighereducationinEmporia.In1917,KSN

beganofferingabachelor’sdegreeincommerce.ThefirstgraduateoftheprogramwasRaymondGriffithCremer,wholendshisnametothebuildingnowhousingtheSchoolofBusiness.

KansasStateTeachersCollege(KSTC)beganofferingtheBachelorofScienceinBusiness(BSB)degreein1952.Asaresultofprogramgrowth,changesinstudentinterest,andtheneedsofsociety,theprogrambeganofferingseveralmajorswithintheBSB.In1971,KSTCwasauthorizedtoawardtheMasterofScienceinBusiness.In1975,thenameofthedegreewaschangedtotheMasterofBusinessAdministration.

Atthesametime,KSTCwasalsogoingthroughchanges.In1974,itbecameEmporiaStateKansasCollege.Thenamechangedagainin1977toEmporiaStateUniversity.In1983,theDivisionofBusinessandBusinessEducation,acomponentoftheSchoolofAppliedArtsandSciences,wasreorganizedintotheESUSchoolofBusiness.Dr.SajjadA.HashmibecameitsfirstdeanandwasinstrumentalintheSchoolachievingitsAACSBInternationalaccreditationin2002.

Today,theSchooloffersBSBdegreeswithsixmajors:accounting,businessadministration,finance,information

systems,management,andmarketing.TheBachelorofScienceinEducation(BSE)degreewithaconcentrationinbusinessteachereducationisalsooffered,alongwithminorsinaccounting,informationsystems,marketing,andgeneralbusiness.

TheMBAprogramprovidesadvancededucationinbusinessadministrationtothoseseekingadvancementtomiddle-andupper-managerialandexecutivepositions.TheMasterofScienceinBusinessEducationprogramisofferedforbusinessandcomputerteacherswhodesireadvancededucationalpreparationtoenhancetheirprofessionalcompetenciesandforprofessionalbusinesspeople,suchasthosewhoadministercorporatetraininginitiatives.

TheSchoolisfortunatetohavethreeexcellentcenters–CenterforBusinessandEconomicDevelopment(CBED),CenterforInsuranceEducation(CIE),andSmallBusinessDevelopmentCenter(SBDC)–underthedirectionofourseniorbusinessfacultyandstaffwhichhelpstudentsandcompaniescopewithcriticalmanagementchallengestoday.

TheSchoolofBusinessalsohousestheKansasBusinessHallofFame(KBHF).TheKBHFrecognizesKansanswhohavedistinguishedthemselvesthroughsignificantaccomplishmentsinbusiness,leadershiproles,philanthropy,andcontributionstosociety.

ACSBInternationalaccreditationiswhattheworld’sbestbusinessschoolsseektoachieve.Asthelargestandlongeststandingaccreditingbody,AACSBInternationalensuresschoolsareprovidingahigh-qualityeducationtotheirstudents.

InApril2002,afteryearsofrigorouspreparationandreview,theESUSchoolofBusinessreceivedaccreditationfromAACSBInternational.In2007,theSchoolreceivedanunconditional(noissues)responseinitsmidtermreviewfromAACSB.

Lessthanone-thirdofU.S.businessschoolprogramsandonly5%ofbusinessschoolprogramsworldwidemeettherigorousstandardsofAACSBInternationalaccreditation.Thisdistinctionisanachievementrequiringatremendousamountofeffort.It’sworthit.

AACSBInternationalaccreditationrepresentsabusinessschool’sunderstandingofthecomplexdemandsfacedbytoday’sbusinessorganizationsandleaders:globaleconomicforces,conflictingvalues,changingtechnologyinproductsandprocesses,anddemographicdiversityamongemployeesandcustomers.

AmodestCarlRickettsisuncomfortabletalkingabouthimselfinthoseterms,butit’scleartoanyonewhohasspenttimeinhispresencethathepossessesallofthosequalities.Theyarethesamequalities,henotes,thatallEmporiaStateUniversitygraduatesseemtoexhibit.

“ThetypicalESUstudent—myselfincluded—feelsit’simportanttojustout-workthecompetition,”saidRicketts(BSE1980,MBA1981).“Ithinkthatistheonecharacteristicthatwetakeintotheworkworldthatservesuswell.

Forthepasttwoandone-halfyears,RickettshasbeenthechiefstrategicplanningofficerforTopeka-basedCapitolFederalSavings.“Wearean$8.3billionbank,buteventhoughwe’relargeintermsofassets,wearefewerthan800employees.SoIgettheopportunitytogetinvolvedinmany

differentthings,rangingfrompersonnelmatterstoplanningforpotentialacquisitions,”Rickettsexplained.

EventhoughitwasalongwayfromhisNewYorkCityupbringing,RickettssaidEmporiaStateUniversitywastherightchoiceforhim.“OneofthebigreasonswhyIcameherewasthequalityoftheprofessors.Ihadheardgoodthingsabouttheaccountingprogram,andthatstudentsgoingthroughtheprogramwererankinghighintermsofpassingtheCPAexam.Thatwasimportanttome,”Rickettsnoted.

ThatqualityofencouragementissomethingRickettsispracticingatthisstageinhiscareer.

“It’simportantformetobeacoachandtrytoinstillsomeofthevaluesinthepeoplecomingupthatothersinstilledinme.Ilookforwardtohelpingtheyoungergenerationimprovetheirskillsandfindtherightwaytogetthatnextrunguptheladder.”

In2005,Dr.DonaldS.Millerwasthefirstbusinessprofessortoreceivethisaward.OnecolleaguedescribedMillerasa“livinglegendwhenitcomestoteaching”andnotedhis“energeticpositiveapproach”toclassroominstruction.InanEmporiaGazettearticlecoveringtheawardceremony,Millerwasquotedassaying,“Ilovetheopportunitytoworkwithstudentsandseethemprogressanddevelop.Ihaveachancetoseethemgrow.”

Thecoursesneededtomeettherequirementsforthesemajorsareofferedonarotationthatallowspart-timestudentstocompletethedegreebytakingeveningand onlineclasses. In2008,theKansasBoardofRegentsauthorizedESUtoofferitsMasterofBusinessAdministration(MBA)programattheMetroLearningCenter.Theprogramisstructuredtofacilitatecareeradvancementforworkingadults. StudentsinthisprogrammustcompletethesamerequirementsasstudentsontheESUcampus.StudentsarenotrequiredtocometoEmporiatocompleteanycourseoradministrativeprocess. ESUoffersjunior-andsenior-level(upperdivision)businesscoursesfortheconvenienceofthoseinthemetropolitanareawhowanttoearnaBachelorofScienceinBusinessdegree.

Kleinsorge’swordsareafittingassessmentofhertransitionfromsingle-parentcollegestudentworkingfourpart-timejobstohercurrentpostasdeanofOregonStateUniversity’sCollegeofBusiness.

KleinsorgeearnedanaccountingdegreefromEmporiaStateUniversityin1981.

“Iwasanolder-than-averagestudentandasingleparent,”sherecalled.“Thefacultyweresosupportive.Thiswasatatimewhenyoustillpulledcardstoenroll,andIcouldgoinandsay,‘I’masinglemotherwithtwochildren.Ican’ttakeacoursebeforethechildrenstartschool,andIneedtobeoutwhenkindergartenisover.’”

ThelessonsKleinsorgelearnedaboutcooperationandflexibilityarethesameonesshereliesontodayassheleadsOregonState’sbusinesscollegeserving2,400majors,650minors,andanother1,650studentstakingbusinesscoursesaspartoftheirmajors.

Thoselessonsalsoopenedadoortotheabilitytodreambig.

“Firstandforemost,thelearningIgotfromESUwasthatIcoulddoanythingIwantedtodo,”saidKleinsorge,notingthatherEmporiaStateexperiencetaughtherthevalueofcollaboration.“IhadsomuchsupportfromtheESUadmissionsandfinancialaidoffices,thelocalAmericanBusinessWomen’sAssociationandmyfriendsthatIreallyunderstoodtheimportanceofstrongnetworksforsupportandsuccess.”

Butitwasdreamingtemperedwithrealism.“IwassothrilledthatIhadpassedtheCPAexamandIwantedtotellJohnRich(nowassociatedeanoftheSchoolofBusiness)first.Hesaid,‘Well,don’tforgetthatpassingtheCPAexamisnodifferentthangettingadriver’slicense.Itdoesn’tmakeyouagooddriver,itjustgivesyoupermissiontogetontheroad!’”Kleinsorgesaysshestilltellsstudentsthatstorytodrivehomethepointthattheycanalwaysaccomplishmore.

“EducationwasmydoorforachievingallthethingsthatIimagined.EmporiaStategaveme,touseDr.Rich’scomment,adriver’slicensetogetontheroad.”

IleneKleinsorge’sroadisfullofdreamsandaspirations,notonlyforherself,butfortheinstitutionandthestudentssheserves.“IammotivatedtomakethisthebestplacepossibleforthepeoplethatIserve,fortheydeserveonlythebestfromme,andthebestthatIhavetogive.”

Asvicepresidentofhumanresources,Gibbensnowoverseesadepartmentofnearly600peoplewhichmanagesthehumanrelationssideofKochanditssubsidiaries.Atthetimehejoinedthecompanyin1982,Kochemployedaround3,000people.

“I’vebeenabletobeinvolvedinanumberofacquisitionsandhavewatchedusgrow.It’sbeenaveryrewardingcareerforme,andit’sbeenfuntowatchpeoplewhohavehiredinovertheyearsgrowrightalongwithme,”Gibbensnoted.

OneofthosepeopleGibbenshaswatchedgrowisanotherESUgraduate,DaveRobertson.“IinterviewedDaveoncampus,andIremembertellingsomebody,‘Thisguy’sreallygood.Weallmayworkforhimsomeday.’Andsureenough,wedo!”RobertsonispresidentandchiefoperatingofficerofKochIndustries.

Approximately70EmporiaStateUniversitygradsareemployedatKoch.“It’salargenumber,andinterestingly,anumberofEmporiaStategradsjusthappentoworkinhumanresources.That’snotcompletelybyaccident,Iwilladmit,”Gibbonsnoteswithaslygrin.

“There’saMidwesterncultureandethicthatworkswellatKoch,”Gibbonsexplained.“Obviously,wehirepeoplefromallovertheworld,butthepercentageofstudentsfromschoolslikeEmporiaStatewhofitourcultureishigher.Plus,it’seasytofindfacultywhoknowthestudentsandcantellusabouttheiracademiccapabilitiesandleadershipqualities.”

The Department of Accounting and Information Systems (AIS) TheDepartmentofAccountingandInformationSystemshasprovidedsupportforallSchoolofBusinessmajorsbyteachingtwoaccountingandtwoinformationsystemscoursestakenbyallSchoolofBusinessstudents.Inadditiontotheseclasses,AISfacultyhavetaughtavarietyofaccountingandinformationsystemscoursesthatwereeitherrequiredfortherespectivemajororprovidedelectivesforSchoolofBusinessmajors.

Forthelastsixyears,AIShasprovidedtaxreturnhelpthroughtheVolunteerIncomeTaxAssistance(VITA)Program.In2009,theVITACenterfiledover500returnsandhadatotalof18volunteersparticipate.

In2006,fivestudentssubmittedaprojectonXBRL(ExtensibleBusinessReportingLanguage)thatwasthegrandprizewinnerinanationalcompetition.XBRLisamethodofdescribingfinancialstatementsforbothpublicandprivatecompanies.

The Department of Business Administration and Education (BAE) Aspartofitscommunityoutreach,theBusinessAdministrationandEducationprogramconductstrainingactivitiesforareaandstatebusinesses.Theseincludemultiple-week,half-daysupervisoryandmanagementtrainingsessions.

Sessioninstructors,chosentocustomizeeachtrainingsessiontotheneedsoftheparticipants,aredrawnfromtheESUSchoolofBusiness,psychologydepartment,communicationsdepartment,andoutsidespecialists.

EachFebruary,BusinessEducationfacultymembersconductaComputerTeachersConferenceforhighschoolandcommunitycollegebusinesseducationteachersfromaroundthestate.

aftergraduatingfromESUin1995,andmostrecentlypostedhiminBaghdad,Iraq,wherehewaschiefoftheStrategicPlansandProgramsoffice.“MyprimaryresponsibilitywasfortheprogrammingofourIraqiSecurityForcesFund.It’sabouta$10billionprogram,”Hamiltonexplained.

Hamiltonisa2006recipientofESU’sOutstandingRecentGraduateaward.In2008,hewasoneoftencandidatesearningthehighestscoresintheworldontheCPAexamadministeredbytheAmericanInstituteofCertifiedPublicAccountants(AICPA).

OriginallyfromNewYork,ArtPiculellearnedhisundergraduatedegreeinpsychologyandsociologyfromESUandlaterreceivedaJ.D.fromtheUniversityofKansasSchoolofLaw.Dee(Wagner)PiculelltaughtschoolforseveralyearsinLawrence.

Inlateryears,whenthePiculellswouldmeetyearlywithcollegefriendsanddiscussclassestakenandfacultyatESU,Dr.Baehr’snamewouldrepeatedlysurfaceinconversation.DeeandArtwereconsideringdonationstoschoolstheyhadattended,andin2004,thecoupledonatedlandworth$500,000totheEmporiaStateUniversityFoundationtoestablishtheDr.HermanB.BaehrEndowedChairofFinance,nowheldbyDr.BarrySmith.

NowdevelopersofresidentialcommunitiesandcommercialinvestmentsinOregon,Washington,andArizona,thePiculellssaidtheirphilosophyongivingwasshapedalongtimeagobythebenefitstheyhavereceivedfromothers.“LifehasbeengoodtoDeeandI,andwewanttoreturnthefavor,”saidArt.
