CHICAGO, Illinois – A flurry ofannouncements touting significant holidayhiring plans provides some much-neededhope to those seeking temporary, seasonalemployment this year.

Over the past two weeks, a handful ofemployers announced seasonal hiringplans that will add a total of 200,000workers to their collective payrolls, according to Challenger, Gray &Christmas, Inc., the global outplacementfirm that tracks job-cut and hiringannouncements. The holiday hirersincluded Toys R Us, Macy’s, Kohl’s, andUPS.

The announcements came at the onset ofthe 2010 holiday hiring season, whichChallenger expects to be better than 2009,though not as strong as the pre-recessionyear of 2007.

Last year, retail payrolls experienced a netgain of 501,400 workers in October,November and December, according tonon-seasonally adjusted data from theBureau of Labor Statistics. That was a 54percent increase from 2008, when holidayhiring fell to a 22-year low of 324,900.

“This year we expect to see further gainsin seasonal hiring, but it probably will notachieve the levels we saw in 2006 or 2007when retailers’ holiday payrolls grew by746,800 and 720,800, respectively.Consumer spending is still well below pre-recession levels, so retailers and othersectors adding workers will be careful notto over-hire,” said John A. Challenger, chief executive officer of Challenger, Gray& Christmas.

While the holiday hiring outlook focuseson retailers, Challenger is quick to pointout that they are not the only employersadding seasonal workers. This is evidencedby the fact that UPS announced plans tohiring 50,000 workers to help meetincreased holiday demand.

“Opportunities also exist in areas such asfood service, hospitality and leisure. Jobseekers also should not limit their searchesto the biggest employers. Toys R Us willundoubtedly be swamped with applicants, making it extremely competitive.Meanwhile small, mom-and-pop toystores may be overlooked,” saidChallenger.

Announced Hiring Plans will put 200,000 People to Work Nationwide for the HolidaysBy Challenger, Gray, & Christmas, Inc.

(ARA) – You can find a lot ofinformation – sometimes confusing –about the cost of a college education.By some reports, it can cost $50,000per year to earn a bachelor's degree. On the other hand, according to theCollege Board, half of all full-timestudents attending public and privatenot-for-profit colleges pay less than$8,700 per year in tuition and fees.Despite these extremes, the cost ofhigher education is increasing at analarming pace.According to the same College Boardreport, the average annual tuition andfees at all schools (public, private, for-profit and not-for-profit) rose as muchas 6 percent last year. At these levels, amid calls for a higher degreecompletion rate among Americans, it'sjustifiable to be concerned overmounting student loan debt.Expense verses investmentWhile not a defense of high tuition,an important step in reconciling thisdilemma is to realize that a collegeeducation is an investment - forindividuals and the nation - not anexpense.According to 2008 Census data, themedian earnings of someone with onlya high school diploma is $27,448,compared to the median income of$47,853 for those with a bachelor'sdegree. Perhaps more important, thosewith a bachelor's degree tend to stayemployed. The current unemploymentrate for those with a degree is less than5 percent. In addition to enriching theintellectual capital of individuals andour country, it is also reported that thetypical college graduate pays 80percent more in total federal, state, andlocal taxes than a high schoolgraduate.Alternatives for achieving aneducated AmericaThere are practical alternatives tokeeping a college degree within thereach and budget of all, solutions that

are real, present and useable today.• Be a strategic educational consumer.Attending a community college is apractical way of saving on tuition whilepreparing for later entry into a"flagship" bachelor's program.Attending a "blue chip" institution cancarry value beyond instruction alone. However, less expensive institutionscan offer similar or even bettereducational outcomes.• Satisfy general educationrequirements through online study, credit by examination, or at acommunity college. Costs often areless, and most four-year institutionswill accept credits in transfer.• Attend summer-term classes or taketransferable courses online. Acceleratetime to degree completion and to full-time employment. A "four-year"degree can be earned in less than threeyears of year-round, full-time study.• Take advantage of being an adultstudent. For those who have somecollege but no degree, the best bet maybe an accredited, nonprofit institutionlike Excelsior College. Excelsiorcombines affordable tuition with theacceptance of prior credit from othercolleges and universities for transferstudents, military and corporatetraining programs that have beenevaluated for college-level credit, andits own credit-by-exam program tohelp students finish what they startedin degrees from its Schools of Businessand Technology, Health Science,Nursing or Liberal Arts.President Barack Obama haschallenged the nation to once againlead the world in the number of adultswith college degrees. To achieve thisgoal, a degree must be both affordableand accessible. And, higher educationitself must be open to innovative, academically sound models to meetthis challenge. Otherwise, Americanscan expect to see their standard ofliving fall and more jobs move abroadin search of more highly educatedworkers.

Peoplewith disabilities are a talented source oflabor who are ready and able to work. Fordecades, Goodwill has been giving peoplewith disabilities the tools they need tofind jobs, build their careers and becomeindependent contributors to theircommunities. “Employees should be judged by thequality of work they perform, not bywhether or not they have a disability,” saidMichelle Smith, CommunicationsManager for Goodwill Industries ofNorthern New England. “Diversity in theworkplace includes people withdisabilities.” It makes good business sense to hirepeople with disabilities. People with

Goodwill has helped people withdisabilities gain the skills they need tofind employment and build fulfillingcareers. Below are the stories of just threeof the people who have become successfulin their careers with help from Goodwill. It’s a tough economy and a tight jobmarket out there; things haven’t quiteturned around yet. If you’re looking for anew position, what can you do to put yourbest foot forward? The obvious answer isto prepare. Beyond that, you’ll want topractice what you’ve prepared.Preparation and practice always improveyour performance. In the job hunt, itapplies equally. Take some focused time toconsider exactly what you are hunting for,and then develop a strategy to achieve thatgoal. Commitment and perseverance areyour allies for success.Take control of your destiny; put thepieces together. This could be as easy as123, ABC, or both. Some ideas to help yououtline your strategies follow.1) Fix your situation: What kind of work

do you want to do?There is an adage that if you do what youenjoy, you’ll never work a day in your life. You need to produce an income; you mayas well find your best fit. This might meanyou work at a job you see as less than ideal, while really doing some soul searchingabout or preparation for what you’d ratherbe paid to do. These are called survivaljobs; they might meet your financial needsfor the present but aren’t necessarily idealor your long term career.Consider where you’d like to be in a yearor two, and what it will take to get youthere. Is it an expanded network ofcontacts, a class or two, a better polishedpresentation? Identify the gaps and takeaction to bridge them. Be patient, but bepersistent. Take another look at whatsurvival job may fit with your strategy. What do you need to make progresstowards your long term goals? Is it shiftwork, or a flexible schedule to reducecomplications with your life away fromwork – or to allow you time to attend aneeded class, participate in a business ortrade organization or to go on interviews?Survival jobs can progress incrementally, getting you to that better place in smaller, more manageable steps. Alternately, asurvival job may conveniently last for theduration of your outlined preparationperiod. What works best for you?Don’t underestimate the value ofnetworking. Having occasional, regularcontact with people doing what you wantto be paid to do will boost your chances offinding an inside line on that opening youare aiming to fill,.. Professionalorganizations are, in essence, socialnetworks. Target those appropriate to yourneeds and attend events. Be mindful thatyour outward appearance determines theimpression you make on others. They arethe people that can guide you towardothers that have available jobs.2) Be sure your application materials

(résumé and cover letter) are accurate, updated, and easy to follow.Your résumé and cover letter are the firstimpressions you make on a prospectiveemployer that hasn’t already met you. There are also tools used to confirm yourabilities to a hiring authority that has metyou before (maybe during a quick, friendlyintroduction at that professionalorganization’s meeting last week).

A résumé without a cover letter can expectto receive about 10 seconds of review; adda quality cover letter and you’ve increasedthe viewing time up to six-fold or more! While résumés and cover letters won’t getyou the job, good ones will get youinterviews which can lead to the offeryou’re looking for.Be sure to consult with professionals toproofread, critique and to offer suggestionsfor both résumés and cover letters. Manypeople will do this for a fee, butCareerCenter and Workforce Solutionsstaff offer this service free of charge. Usethe resources available to understand, andthen produce, effective applicationmaterials.3) The interview:a. Practice makes perfect. Many people are less than comfortablespeaking in public, or talking aboutthemselves professionally, to strangers. Theonly way to develop a better level ofcomfort (and ability) is to practicespeaking about yourself, professionally andaloud. Try this at home with an objective, supportive friend or relative. Try differentmethods, maybe record your voice orpractice aloud in front of a mirror. You’ll besurprised at what you hear in your voiceand see in your body language, and noteareas in need of improvement. Isn’t thatwhat practice is for? Practice and you’llimprove.b. Don’t underestimate the importance of

the ‘likeability factor’ during an interview. You may have all the technical skillsnecessary for a job, but if the interviewerdoesn’t like you, or if he/she can’t imaginehaving lunch with you every day, then yourchances of getting a job offer arediminished. Successful job searching isusually a balance between you theprofessional and you the individual. Belikeable and friendly in your interview toincrease your chances of job search success.A smile is a great starting place.c. Getting hired: Closing the deal.In a competitive job market, you’ll want tobe seen as a valuable product – better thanother choices an employer could make. Useevery opportunity to state your relevantaccomplishments and achievements incover letters, resumes, and in interviews.Ultimately, potential employers want toknow what you can do for them.Employers have other people to choosefrom. Your reason for going on theinterview is to be the successful candidate.Consider the advertising you see and hear. What influences you to select one productover another? Advertisers try to convinceyou that their product is of high qualityand/or value. That makes it better than theother choices. What skills, talents, andexperiences do you bring to the table?Articulate with confidence what you bestattributes are. Those you are talking withwill hear ability and experience in yourvoice, and see it in your face, when youspeak comfortably about the things youexcel at.The job will likely be offered to the personthat interviews the best; the candidate thatis well practiced and more at ease, likeableon a personal level, and is perceived by the
