Please read the statement below and pass the information on to any family or friends attending graduation. What is a Hallowed Hornet? Each month faculty and staff members nominate colleagues who they think contribute to a positive and

successful school environment. All of the nominees’ names are then placed in a hornet hive designed by Regina Oster, EHS art teacher. At the monthly faculty meeting, Mr. Piperato draws a name from the hive. The winner receives his/her dream breakfast provided by Perkins Restaurant located on Lehigh Street, delivered personally by Mr. Piperato, and a Hallowed Hornet certificate. Once again, we had so many nominations at our last meeting, that we selected two winners for the month of May and one winner for June. Way to go faculty and staff! May 2013 winners are Kim Adams and Tracy Maley. June 2013 winner is Andy Moxey.

EHS’s Counseling Department is offering the Method Test SAT Preparation System through Career Cruising.

This program is accessible through the Career Cruising portal at no additional cost to EHS students. The Method Test Preparation System has been proven to “raise SAT scores in as little as 20 hours” if you follow their study guide plan. This software analyzes the results from a real SAT provided as part of their program. The online study guide then pinpoints exactly where students need to improve their scores. As a result, this program helps students hone in on their problem areas through lessons and other test information. Reduce your child’s anxiety about preparing for the SAT by using the Method Test Preparation System available in each student’s Career Cruising account. To access the test preparation system, students should log into their Career Cruising accounts, click on “Assessments”, and then click on “Matchmaker” and “My Skills”. The Method Test Prep link will be found at the bottom of left hand column.

Computer Science Department News

Teachable Moments Occur During ACSL All-Star Trip to Raleigh, NC Eight students just returned from a 5-day trip to Raleigh, NC for this year’s invitational All-Star contest for the American Computer Science League. The students attendees are Eric Dai, 11, Jeremy Lim, 12, and Tyler Borwn, 12, on the Senior Division 3-student team and Omar Ahmed, 10, Alex Krause, 11, Amy Yang, 10, Carlos Fullerton, 11, and Conor Houghton, 11, on the Intermediate Division 5-person team. The invitation to attend was a result of finishing 13

th and 10

th place

internationally in their respective divisions during the 4 contests that were given locally throughout the year.

The trip included stopping in Washington, D.C. to see JFK’s gravesite and the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. The gravesite of Admiral Grace Hopper was visited. Her contributions to the 20

th century were significant in many ways. She invented the compiler and

developed the COBOL language. Without either, the expanse of computer software that affects almost everything we do today would never have been possible. If we have a generation of students who can use technology very effectively but don’t know how to program a computer in any high-level language, just imagine what it would be like if we all still needed to use machine-specific assembly language! We also visited the Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Korean War Memorials in Washington, D.C. We toured the Museum of the Confederacy and Jefferson Davis’ White House in Richmond, VA, and spent a day at Kings Dominion, a Cedar Fair amusement park, on the way back.

Emmaus has participated in the American Computer Science League since 1981 when students were still using Apple IIe computers with 48K of RAM. Incredibly, the conceptual topics that students learn for the competition haven’t changed in 30+ years. They include Finite State Automata, Digital Electronics, Boolean Algebra, Prefix & Postfix Notation, Assembly Language, Graph Theory, Recursive Functions, Computer Number Systems, Lisp Programming, Bit String Flicking, and Data Structures. However, students now program in Java, C++, and Python, none of which existed back then. There are also many more math and science magnet schools, private academies, and alternative schools that compete each year, so Emmaus’ ability to compete at that level is a tribute to our program and our students, even though they didn’t bring home any prizes for winning this year. However, Tyler Brown did receive a plaque for having a perfect 40 out of 40 during the year, an award that has only been given to 2 previous Emmaus High School students. Eric Dai came close with 39 points and received a book for having Emmaus’ highest individual score at the all-star contest.

I strongly encourage each of you to preview the list with your child in order to select a book that is interesting and appropriate. The following statement appears at the top of each reading list: “In the English Department's attempt to provide rich and varied reading experiences for our students, we have selected titles for the summer reading lists written mostly by contemporary authors. Some selections are focused toward mature readers. We encourage parents to assist their children in selecting interesting, appropriate titles for their summer reading. Barnes and Noble’s website provides information including Lexile level, book reviews, and age levels for specific titles. If no age level is specified in the “Product Details” section on the Barnes and Noble site, the book may be focused toward mature readers for various reasons including mature themes or mature content.” Barnes and Noble is suggested as a resource only, not an endorsement of any specific bookseller.

Graduation News A message to our graduates and their guests: Commencement is an academic ceremony backed by nearly a thousand years of history and tradition. It is a day of joy and celebration, but the ceremony itself calls for dignity and quiet respect. We are aware that you have attended sports and entertainment events in arenas and auditoriums where cheering, horns and whistles are appropriate or accepted behaviors. However, noise-making and other disruptive behaviors are not acceptable during Emmaus High School com-mencement exercises. We respectfully request your cooperation in giving this ceremony the respect it deserves and providing an opportunity for ALL of our graduates to be appropriately recognized. Sincerely, Dennis J. Ramella, M.Ed Director of Student Activities

We bid a fond farewell to our retirees…

You will be missed

Below are short biographies of the high school teachers who are retiring this year. They have positively influenced the lives of many young adults throughout their careers. Their colleagues and students will miss them, but we wish them well as they embark on new adventures. Michael Seip When inducted into the Pennsylvania Swimming Hall of Fame in 2002, Michael Seip was described as “Truly one of the outstanding coaches in PIAA history.” Mike’s incredible swimming career began at Dieruff High School when he became a District XI Champion. At East Stroudsburg State College, now East Stroudsburg University, he captained the swim team. He coached the Emmaus High School boys’ and girls’ swim teams from 1982 to 2001, a total of nineteen years. Before securing a teaching position at Emmaus, coached at Central Columbia and Northampton High Schools. At Emmaus, Mike’s record as coach of the boys’ and girls’ swim teams proves his devotion, enthusiasm, and skill. His boys’ team record is 230-26-1 with 16 league titles and 12 district championships. His girls’ record at Emmaus is 235-10-1. He coached 26 state champions, and his 1999-2000 Green Hornet girls’ team won the PIAA title. Mike founded the Emmaus Aquatic Club, which bridged the gap between club sports and high school sports. During this time, he designed the aquatics curriculum. His peers describe him as one of the most dedicated, committed, and highly motivated people ever to coach in Pennsylvania. In addition to his contribution to the sport of swimming, Mr. Seip has always been a pioneer in his depart-ment. He was a pivotal force in leading the district to adopt policies to closely monitor and evaluate student health. Procedures such as examining students’ BMI (body mass index), a program that Mr. Seip spearhead-ed, have since become state mandates. A few years ago, he and his colleagues wrote a grant that allowed the department to purchase heart monitors and fitness equipment. When the district considered eliminating driv-er training, Mike conceived the self-sufficient program, and with the help of his colleagues, he created one of the best driver education programs in the state. His vision for the department has always been fitness-based. He truly believes in educating young adults about adopting healthy lifestyles. His involvement also extended to advising Students Against Drunk Driving from 1983 to 1996. For over a quarter of a century, he has been a proactive leader and gifted liaison for his department. During his thirty-four years of teaching, 31 of which he spent at East Penn School District, Mr. Seip has left an indelible impression in PIAA history and brought immense pride to the East Penn School District and the

teaching profession.

Steve Baier During his 35 years as a science teacher, Mr. Baier has been the recipient of some prestigious awards for his innovation and creativity in the classroom and his dedication to the environment. In 2012 he accepted the DaVinci Science Center Hall of Fame Grand Master Award for Outstanding Science Teaching. In 2008, he was the recipient of the Friend of the Lehigh Valley Award from Wildlands Conservancy. In 2005, he earned the Keystone Technology Integrator Award, an accolade the state presents to teachers who demonstrate in-novative integration of technology into their instruction. Finally, in 1995 Mr. Baier was elected by the Lehigh County Conservation District as the Conservation Teacher of the Year. Mr. Baier taught one year in Danville before he was hired by the East Penn School District. He taught seventh grade at Eyer Middle School for eleven years before transferring to the high school. During his tenure at the high school, Mr. Baier designed the Advanced Placement and College Preparatory Environmental Science courses. He advised the Earth Watch Club from 1997 to 2008 and the Envirothon from 1996 to 2013. When he directed the Envirothon competition, the high school achieved first place in the county every year but one. Teams of students advanced to the state level seventeen times to compete with 66 other counties.

Steve Baier is known throughout the Lehigh Valley for his commitment to conservation and environmental awareness, and over the course of his career, he has inspired many students by making them more cognizant of their impact on the environment. Mr. Baier admits that he will miss working with students. Their enthusiasm has motivated him to do his best every day. Often we are not aware of others’ backgrounds or private stories, so, he says, it’s important to be empathetic and recognize everyone’s gifts.

In retirement, Mr. Baier looks forward to spending more time outdoors. He enjoys bicycling, organic garden-ing, fishing, and hunting. He plans to travel more with his family. They plan to visit Southeast Asia and Africa in the near future. Mr. Baier will also continue working with the Emmaus Upper Milford Advisory Council, and he hopes to volunteer at the Wildlands Conservancy.

Susan Case Susan Case has been an integral part of the Emmaus High School library for 13 years. Before she was hired by the East Penn School District, she worked for other public school districts and public, state, and academic libraries in several different states. She is retiring after 37 years as a librarian. During her years as head librarian at the high school, Mrs. Case strived to make the library a true resource for all members of the building--students and teachers alike. Over the years, she brought the library into the 21st century by allotting funds for the purchase of ebooks and electronic databases. Under her direction, a com-puter room was added to the library so teachers and students can work in an isolated area when developing research projects or other types of project-based learning. Outside of the library, Mrs. Case was an active leader. She served on various committees, including the high school technology integration team and the Classrooms for the Future implementation team. She served as an indispensable leader on several Middle States committees and the social studies, art, and English curricu-lum revisions teams. She also served with the team of teachers who chooses the Academic Hall of Fame award winner at graduation. As the advisor of the academic team, she led the team to five CLIU wins. Of the five times the team advanced to the state championships, they won three times and attended the National Panasonic Competition. They were Lehigh Valley League champions three times. Four times the team advanced to the semi-finals and once for the finals for the Scholastic Scrimmage competitions. During retirement, Mrs. Case will enjoy reading, spending more time with her family, and exploring new intel-lectual endeavors. She says that she enjoyed working in public education because students give her hope for the future. They remind her that change is imminent and good.
