Underground mines are one of the most challenging and demanding environments for operators and equipment. Even the process of getting machines down to work adds a great deal of logistics and costs.As mining goes deeper in response to depleting resources, declining ore grades and the quest to reduce costs, the future of underground mining will be driven by better equipment use and innovative methods to advance safety and increase productivity levels.With the push towards automation on site many mines are looking to create an automated process to carry out many of the previously time consuming and potentially dangerous tasks that miners have to face every day, while looking out for ways to improve loading and haulage performance to lower cost per ton.

eneida®’s Assets & People Aware solution for mines (eMining) includes an underground management system using Smart Wireless Sensors Networks and Advanced Software where the customers are able to draw their own mine, customize the location of control units according to specific needs and develop particular rules for the activation of local digital I/O’s.

eMINING solution provides the following individual modules:

Traffic Management; Personnel and Asset Tracking; Proximity Detection; Assets Control & Monitoring; On-line monitoring and control of electrical engines (motors, pumps and

ventilators); On-line monitoring of Distribution Transformers (DT’s); Vehicle & Production Monitoring; Fuel Tracking.

These modules enable our customers to achieve significant improvements in productivity and safety and a sustainable reduction in operational costs.

Personnel and Asset TrackingThe solution enables the location (by areas/zones) of personnel and assets. The zones definition (and density) depends on the number of control point – EWS GIP-pwr (which can hold up to 4 EWS Readers) installed. The location of these units is defined by the customer and according to specific strategic needs (Checkpoints, Traffic Management, Strategic zones, Underground mine levels, among others).

Each person/asset is equipped with a TAG that transmits a signal every second. When a tag enters the reader reading range, data is transmitted through EWS GIP-pwr to the Control Room where is installed eMining Software. The visualization software will enable operators to have a complete visibility of personnel and assets movement, and to filter this data according to specific needs (for instance, type of workers: electricians, machine operators, instrumentation team, maintenance…; by department; by asset type: heavy machine, light machine, trucks, ventilators, water pumps…).

Traffic ManagementThe intelligent traffic management system improves production efficiency, management, and revenues by minimizing non-productivity times (stop of priority vehicles, information about active/non-active loading points…) within underground galleries. The solution provides the vehicles position in real-time through a graphical interface to the control room, as well as automatically controls traffic lights in order to manage their traffic depending on set priorities.

The Traffic Management solution is based on the information collected by the Vehicle Tracking solution, this data is then processed for the activation (or not) of traffic lights. The traffic lights can be used to prioritize or stop vehicles, authorize access to specific areas (depending on vehicle tag) and to detour particular roads. Each traffic light has its own activation rule which can be defined by the customer or by eneida® engineers.

Proximity DetectionThe solution is to be installed in critical and dangerous assets/vehicles. It enables the detection and identification of nearby vehicles/people/assets within two zones: warning and alert. A console is installed within the vehicle for driver’s information.

Each vehicle is equipped with a EWS u433MHz Vehicle Tag. The most critical vehicles (normally heaviest) are additionally equipped with a peripheral EWS uG433M Readers that enable the detection of nearby TAGs. Near to the driver it is placed a console for visualization of information related to the proximity of other TAGs, its identification and its position zone (alarm or danger).

Asset Control & MonitoringThe solution improves the efficient usage of assets within the underground mine, by activating (or not) specific assets based on the data collected in the field (Personnel & Asset Tracking, Smart Sensors). Using the same software and control points, this solution enables the definition of rules to (dis)activate assets installed within the underground mine. Additionally, specific data can be collected and transmitted from those assets, using analogue/digital I/O or EWS smart sensors (vibration and temperature, current, fuse status, etc) to the central software which enables a Predictive Maintenance and Asset Management Program to be realized (which reduces downtime of critical equipment and improves maintenance efficiency).

Asset control & monitoring solutions: On-line vibration and temperature moni-

toring of electrical engines (pumps, mo-tors, ventilators);

On-line control of electrical machines (pumps, motors, ventilators);

On-line monitoring of Distribution Transformers (DT’s);

Fuel Tracking & Managementeneida®’s Readers and TAGs can be used to control a fuel station, to authorize (or not) and monitor the fuel loading of Tagged assets.

This solution allows an automatic control of refuelling assets by means of eneida® wireless sensors technology: An active or passive TAG is fixed on each

authorized vehicle; The Fuel Dispenser is equipped with an

EWS Reader that communicates with eneida® Fuel Station System;

The EWS Reader is configured to select the vehicles that stop at the Fuel Station;

Only a vehicle fitted with an authorized Tag will unlock the fuel dispenser pump;

Reports of refuelling events (who, when, type and amount of fuel) will be gener-ated automatically and can be used for fully automatic paperless billing/ recon-ciliation.

eMining Software

The software is an important module of the presented solution. Its design was defined based on a modular platform that has significant advantages for final customers: Customer is able to customize the software according to its needs: mine design, control

points, rules for I/O activation , mine expansion / different configuration; Customer learns about the different rules impact; One software for a variety of solutions; Remote access to each installation for maintenance and software upgrades (enabling the

analysis and improvement of rules from eneida® – API).

Features: Real-time system update; Ability to design mine configuration, roads direction, sensors location, I/O’s rules definition; Visualization of mine design according to configuration (zoom in/out); Visualization of mine operations: vehicle & personnel tracking, I/O’s position; Alert Table (information, warning and critical); Vehicle data table (vehicle identification, position, loading location, time in/out, direction in-

dication); Operations modes: Automatic, Manual and Emergency; Manual activation/ deactivation: Control Points – TAG readers and I/O’s; TAG; System log register and visualization; Data archive in Database and reporting; Powerful filter and searching tools.
